we decided to try this pub for food having read impressive reviews. the food was nice but to be honest i was expecting it to be better based on the reviews i'd read (perhaps my expectations were set too high). don't get me wrong the food is good but i felt it was a bit overpriced for what it was.
i had the chicken kiev with twice cooked chips and my partner had the wild boar burger. both mains were good but nothing special particularly for €17-18 per dish. i just expected something more.
the pub itself is cosy if a little dark. they do have a great selection of beers and the service was good.

attention foodies - you cannot miss this one if you're visiting dublin! no boring pub food to be seen here, instead you'll find incredible irish classics given a seriously modern makeover. i had the vegetarian scotch egg for entree (mustard leeks around a soft boiled egg, oh wow!!) and the black pudding entree as a main (easily the best black pudding i've ever had, particularly with the goats cheese and sweet potato croquette!). the sticky toffee pudding with poached pear and caramel sauce for dessert was divine, as was the coffee cocktail 'the runcible spoon' (coffee with caramel and chocolate liqueur). amazing food and while the service was slow at times, it certainly doesn't tarnish the experience. sensational!

an irish pub with a fresh, contemporary twist. good food and a great selection of craft beers and whiskey. don't expect generic pub grub if you find yourself a table – menu is authentically irish but prepared and served with a touch of modern restaurant flair. trendy joint.

dinner with some co-workers! cosy place with excellent beer selection but the food lacks quality for the price. i had the vegetaria scotch egg for starter and pan fried hake for main course which was disappointing. although the scotch egg was good (not great) the fish was more like a bad reinvented fish and ships! i would have scored it lower if it wasn't the space and beer selection. not worth the price in my opinion.

dinner with some colleagues! the food was quite nice but not great.
as a starter, i tried the smoked hake scotch egg. tasty, but i was expecting it to be a little more runny on the inside.
i was a little bit disappointed with pork belly. tasty sauce but the pork was lacking flavor, and i was expecting a little more crackling.
great beer selection (extra 0,5 just for that)!

after our first visit to l. mulligan grocer, stoneybatter for drinks and (unintentional) dessert in january we decided we had to return for dinner.

from first glance you might think this is an ordinary irish pub but you'd be very much mistaken. they have an extensive craft beer and whiskey menu along with a decent wine list and some craft ciders thrown in. then there's the food. this place has completely reinvented itself as a gastropub. the menus are inside vintage books which i've mentioned in my previous post. i've included photos of the menu but it does change to reflect seasonal produce. as you can see they pair their starters and main courses with beer and their desserts with whiskey.

it didn't us long to choose what to have.

starters

i went with the pork and gubeen chorizo bon bons and my fiancé chose the scotch egg.

the bon bons were fab. the sauce and apple were a great balance to the kick you get from the chorizo. he loved the scotch egg and he let me try a bit of the pork and breadcrumbs - it was yum!!

main courses

he chose the braised wild boar and i decided on the chicken.. all elements on both dishes were perfectly cooked.

dessert

i repeated my choice from our last visit and got the dark arts porter brownie served with honeycomb and blackcurrant sorbet. he got the special - creme brûlée with marshmallows and turkish delight. i got a french press coffee and sean got a glass of yellow spot whiskey.

drinks - i chose wine (viognier) and he had galway hooker cask ale.

the bill came in an oxford mathematical instruments tin (how many of us had one of them in school?!) and was accompanied by a little brown bag of jellies. this time there were cola bottles and jelly babies inside.

the dishes are presented so well. the staff are extremely pleasant. i just love the little touches like how the menus and bills are presented (and the jellies are a really nice touch!)

if you're looking for something different or don't want to travel all the way into the city centre for great food & beer you should definitely try here.

was a bit disappointed. i had the veggie burger and the portion was a bit small. also felt that they are trying to hard to be "hipster". keep it more simple and it would be much better

this place is out of this world. i absolutely love it. our friends live nearby so we were looking for somewhere to eat near them. had heard this was good so we rocked up and were promptly seated, it was lunch on a saturday and boy did it get packed out by 12pm, with good reason.

service was friendly knowledgeable and quick. great selection draught and craft beers. menu is not too large and seasonal which i love. we had haddock scotch egg- amazing ! and love the concept. normal scotch egg was good too. not too dry and meaty/ a good balance.
i had the blossom fish which was cooked perfectly and was a decent thick fillet, was amazing.
the burger was excellent- with lovely cheese melted on the pattie and whole gerkjns and to die for chips.
little touches like the menus and the crockery and getting timer with your tea completed the meal.
i highly recommend this place.

my first visit to this pub/restaurant.  food is really good - a small menu but well priced and good wholesome food.  i had the braised boar - first time to ever taste boar and it was delicious.  others in our party had the steak - really good and the fish and chips - again very good.  the only complaint was the service was very haphazard - we ordered wine when we sat down and it wasn't served until after we had all finished our starters and then only when we reminded the waiter.  the seating is all long tables and benches - not the most comfortable.  felt the bar staff were a bit dismissive when we were enquiring about different types of beers, gins etc but perhaps they are fed up explaining all, but again, i think if you work in a craft bar you should expect this and be more pleasant.  i would go back but not in any great rush.

i've been to mulligans quite a few times over the last couple of years and i've never had a bad meal. i've always left with that satisfied fuzzy feeling of needing a nap afterwards. the menu changes to what the season is which is nice. and each menu booklet is placed in a hardback book of type, which i've always thought is lovely, not to mention the old school metal pencil case your bill comes in with a little brown paper bag full of jellies. but anyway back to the main event - the food. i can't remember the last time i had anything other than the scotch egg for starters. it is so perfectly done that i've never been able to say no. on my last visit i had the pleasure of trying my friends starters also. my sister had the haddock scotch egg (also very very good) and my boyfriend had the gubeen and chorizo bon bons served with apple and kale. this starter was so good i may have to get one of my own next time. for my main i had the crumbed haddock with fennel and pea salad and chips. it was gorgeous. the fish was very lightly dusted and the fennel subtly. the desserts too, if you are able for them are quite the treat. i shared some of the sea salt and caramel brownie served with pistachio. oh my was it indulgent, but very good. quite large for one person. my boyfriend had the earl grey chocolate mousse which was also very nice and the lighter option. all the dishes on the menu also have a recommended drink to accompany it, which is a nice touch. on my trip previous i had the dark chocolate cake with a small whiskey and it was devine. i'll definitely be back again and again.

myself and a friend went in here on a busy saturday with the intention of having dinner. the staff were very helpful in making space for us, and were very attentive. the menus are lovely, hidden in secondhand books and offered a tidy food selection and a wide range of beers. i had the chicken burger and it was good as chicken burgers go, nothing extraordinary but satisfying. they had lupe garou on tap which is absolutely beautiful and made me quite happy.

if you are as much of an egg slut as myself you will love the scotch egg at l. mulligan grocer. you won't be disappointed. they have a huge range of craft beers and whiskeys to choose from also. sadly i didn't get to sample any as i was driving but looking forward to my next visit.

when you enter into l mulligan grocer you think you’ve walked into any old pub. lots of wood, dark corners and the smell of beer permeates the air. walk deeper into the place and suddenly you come across a room that is much brighter and actually resembles a restaurant. there are bricked walls and tables are made up of very chunky blocks of wood. the interior decorator aimed for a rustic but quaint effect and it works because who can’t be charmed by the scrabble rack that spells out “reserved” or the flowers placed in a jar?
