john montagu? more like john monta-good!. where do i begin?

the cafe was a wonderfully relaxing way to spend my final morning in sydney.

the coffee was fantastic. the baristas? even better. i had to resist the urge to jump over the counter and give them a playful smack on the rear for giving me the best start to the morning.

i chose the cured salmon, dill, cream cheese and avocado on rye bread. yum...yum...yum. the staff have hit jackpot with that house cured salmon. and the truffled coddled egg added extra? more scrumptious than the staff, and that's saying something. (note: some may argue it's a poached soft boiled egg, let's not kid ourselves, it's a coddled egg).

baristas - cramazing.
manager - stunning.
cooks - bomb diggity.

well done john, well bloody done.

i was expecting this cafe to be named after its owner but discovered that john montagu invented the sandwich. one would argue it was while he was gambling so he could eat with one hand and play cards with the other...  so how was my gamble with john's sandwich? it was a nice day so i opted to sit outside on the footpath by the window. with not much traffic it was quite pleasant to sit and watch the cars. relaxed and intimate, the staff were happy and friendly and non intrusive. inside there is a communal table and window bench so its great if you are by yourself or with others. house-cured salmon sandwich with truffle coddled egg $17.00 i ordered   the  house-cured salmon sandwich ($15) with a  truffle coddled egg  ($2). there were no regrets. it was delivered as an open sandwich which worked great for breakfast. the truffle oil, chunky avocado and beautifully cured salmon worked a treat. move over smoked salmon, i'll have this version of salmon any day. my skim cap was nice and didn

best breakfast. simply the best egg & bacon roll i've come across in australia and the coffee is right up there as well. always visit when i'm in town, just wish they would share the "secret" of the sauce. good work guys.

i only got to have a bite of the beef cheek sandwich but it was incredible, probably has something to do with the fact the beef is braised for 12 hours. 12 hours –

joy in a jar. i have experienced an inced coffee like no other at john montagu in woolloomooloo. the hint of caramel, the decadence of condensed milk and childhood delight of milo made this the highlight of my week.
thank you for the joy in a jar.

great food - we waited a while for our order to arrive but we made some special orders so it was understandable to some degree. great small location with a view seats at the window bar and one big communal table - four small tables outside. i recommend going there for weekend brunch on a sunny day!

nestled on the corner of cathedral street in woolloomooloo is recently opened john montagu. if you’re naming your store after the montagu family, it can only mean one thing, you take your sandwiches seriously. the limited, yet diverse menu includes a selection of house-cured salmon with avocado, dill cream cheese and salmon roe on rye, or field mushroom with truffle parmesan. for the meat lover’s theres a saucy 12 hour braised beef cheeks. a great sandwich is not complete without a drink to down it with. their cold press coffee is often confused with cold drips found in many cafes. however their method is a little different, but it still produces something very similar and you would be none the wiser if you never ask one of their staff about the process. not a coffee drinker? don’t worry, they’ve got a selection of other drinks including a fresh and crisp elderflower and mint soda that goes really well with that amazing 12 hour braised beef cheeks with

the beef cheeks sandwich ($16) was nothing short of amazing. it had super tender beef cheeks that were braised for 12 hours, melted cheddar cheese, spanish onion, sauerkraut, and house glaze barbecue glaze in st honore's white sourdough bread. it all went well together but it was the tangy barbecue house glaze that stood out.
