0 by marc smith on 21 may, 2015 where to eat/drink share this post whether you’ve stayed up all night partying or you’ve had a restful sleep and just starting your day, brunch in the french quarter of new orleans at jimmy j’s cafe is theplaceto be. there will always be a line up but the wait is worth it so just be patient. in fact, while you are waiting in line head inside to the bar and order yourself a bloody mary or any other drink that strikes your fancy. take your drink and head back to yourplacein line, everybody does and it is how i met my brunch buddies tori and chase . this young couple from texas was in line before me and commented on my lack of a beverage, from there a friendship was born over eggs and mimosas. brunch line up outside jimmy j’s cafe in new orleans jimmy j’s is located just a few short steps off canal street in the french quarter at 115 chartres street . it opened in 2011 and has fast become a destination for locals an

randomly stumbled upon this littleplacetucked on the outskirts of the french quarter. besides being packed in like sardines and having an overly friendly server, the food was surprisingly very good. i would definitely be back to try the rest of the menu. jimmy j's could possibly be one of my new brunch spots.

thisplacegets 5 stars for the best breakfast i've ever had! $5 mimosa and the eggs tuscan style ($10.50) - two perfectly poached eggs on top of the most silky and perfect polenta and vegetable ratatouille. it was absolutely heaven when i broke the egg and it oozed into the polenta. what a dish.

service was friendly and quirky - just the way i like it. smallplacethat seats maybe 20 people. thisplaceis just a few steps into the french quarter.

i found thisplaceon zomato. it was close to where we were staying and we wanted just some good nola cuisine at a reasonable price.

the staff was friendly as was mentioned, the decor is good but slightly goofy. i liked it.

but the food. thisplacedoesn't cut corners. absolutely worth the $$ price instead of the $ price listed. i highly recommend it.

thisplaceis amazing! probably one of the best breakfast places i have ever eaten at. the owners stands at the front doors and visits with you... you know it's right when the owner is recommending other great dives to try in the area! banana's foster french toast and monte cristo french toast are a must. great service and awesome food!

don't eat here. first i was asked to wait outside in the rain. then i was give the wrong order. the server switched the plates up at the table. once we straightened that out, i realized i still didn't have what i ordered. there were lumps in my grits. very large ones. and my scrambled eggs were dry and over done. thisplaceis terrible.

disgusting food and hostile service!. it was my last night in new orleans and my group decided to grab breakfast here. we had a group of 8 and our waiter/bartender/owner? told us that they only took 2 credit or debit cards per table. the majority of us didn't have cash so we had to spilt up into two tables. we should have left after that. i ordered a fruit smoothie and the blueberry brandy glazed french toast. i asked what type of fruit smoothies they had and apparently it was just one type. i then asked if i could substitute the meat from the entree ( i don't eat pork) for eggs and the server was like "ummmhmmmm", like he didn't want to do that. oookkayyy. by this point i am already over thisplaceand just wanted to eat.

our first table got their food pretty soon after ordering. the table i was at waited for over 15 minutes after our first table got their food. they were done eating when we got our food!

the smoothie came out at the same time as our food...fine. however, the smoothie was so nasty! i could not drink it. it tasted like it was made with greek yogurt, super sour with no fruit taste. when the menu said 'fresh fruit smoothie", i expected a juice-based smoothie with actual fruit. hell, frozen fruit would have worked for me! the whole table tasted it and agreed it was disgusting and not worth $6.

the blueberry brandy-glazed brie french toast was also horrible. it was cold, not even warm. the brie was hard and not melty, like the french toast had been sitting out for like 15 minutes (hmmm?). nobody's food at our table was warm. i refuse to eat cold food. i called over the server and asked him (nicely, mind you) if i could get my toast warmed up because it was not hot. he said they didn't have a microwave, he asked if i wanted it remade or to take it off the bill. i had it taken off the bill because i didn't want to wait again.

at this point, my partner and i decided we needed to say something about the smoothie so my partner called the server over again. he basically told the server that the smoothie wasn't what he expected ( what he really meant was that the smoothie sucked!). the waiter got belligerent and started talking down to my boyfriend (a paying customer) asking what type of smoothie were you expecting?, and saying things like do you know what a smoothie is? and oh you are a yogurt expert? (when my boyfriend said he tasted greek yogurt in the smoothie). the server was arguing with my boyfriend over a smoothie in front of other customers in the "cafe"; that was so unprofessional. at first during the argument, the sever didn't want to take the smoothie off the bill saying "i'm not taking that off". my partner stayed calm during this unnecessary confrontation. the server eventually said "fine i'll take it off the bill", grabbed the smoothie, stormed off into the kitchen and dumped the smoothie into the trash (where it belonged haha) very aggressively.

the waiter then began to take his anger out on the rest of our table when he ignored us when we waited to pay the bill. i was very tempted to walk out without paying. my friend had to literally yell him over because he was doing everything else but take our bill.

i immediately went to popeye's afterwards and had an amazing meal. dang, a fast food restaurant prepared better food and had better customer service than this "cafe".
**side note: i feel like the cooks were out of it. it seemed to me (could be wrong) that they were drinking on the job. they went behind the bar to refill their cups.

i rate thisplace0 out of 5 stars. it actually deserves negative stars if that was possible.

tl; dr: this place's food sucks, the attitude of the waiter also sucks. only come here if you want a side of attitude and aggression with your salty eggs and cold french toast that cost $12+.

what happened to this place??. first two visits food was good, and service was personable and on point. third visit was during a busy sunday lunch with out of town guests. taking into account how busy they were, i was fine with the wait for a table as thisplaceis quite small.

finally seated, took several minutes for our obviously not overly concerned server to greet us and take drink orders. as we were hot, tired, and thirsty the first round of beverages were quickly dispensed with. over 10 minutes later, after our server and the host (owner??), passed by our table of empty glasses we finally got refills and our food order taken.

steak & eggs were good, steak was slightly overcooked from the requested mr, but i was hungry and not sending it back.
oyster po-boy was lame. bread had no butter, was barely warmed, definitely not toasted. oysters way overcooked and lacked seasoning.
reuben was ok, fries were not crisp and too salty. they also tasted like old grease, fryer was burnt and needed changing!

now for the coups de gras.....the so called tomato mozzarella panini.......omg, how utterly disgusting! firstly, since when does a panini come on french bread? as for the mozzarella, it was shredded bag cheese, not fresh mozzarella. the pesto tasted fresh from the jar. and to top it off, the server forgot to order this from the kitchen, and looked confused when he brought out the rest of the order as one of our party had nothing in front of her. they rushed the sandwich, and the shredded cheese sandwich was delivered stone cold, with no melting of the cheese whatsoever!

i am not one to complain normally, and very rarely return food, but there was no way i was paying for the sandwich and it was removed from our bill. considering by this time the rest of us were done eating, my daughter refused another attempt at her "panini".

manager was aware of the situation, but never came to our table to say anything. server gave her a free piece of their butter cake, which was something at least. as for the cake, well i would not want to pay for it but it was ok.

an hour into lunch we finally got the check and low and behold our server had put a extra bloody mary on the ticket which we did not order. when i pointed this out, he said it was from the table before us. say what? every time a table is closed out in the computer, that order is gone-oh well, whatever, just get me out of here!

location is the only thing left going for this place. please get your food and service back up to par, being busy is no excuse for such ineptitude.
