went here recently with a big group. got sat down in a back corner directly under massive speakers. not only could we not here the people at the far end of the table but spent the night yelling across the table to the person sitting directly opposite me. thefoodwas just ok, and the service was highly inattentive. i'm sure it would be different if we were sat in a different spot as other friends have commented on how good this place is. we all went upstairs at the end of the night for a drink. too intense so we left. must be getting old.

great service, nice atmosphere and thefoodwas pretty good too though the portion sizes weren't particularly generous. also tried cold sake for the first time. my personal favourite was the wagyu ribs though i couldn't particularly fault anything we ordered.

ichi ni nana izakaya is a popular restaurant in fitzroy, with modern vibes blended in nicely with japanese culture. we arrived early (around 5pm) and were seated promptly at our own private booth. the restaurant is relatively large (i assume) but is comprised of several areas that are sectioned off, making it seem a bit like a maze to navigate (it was relatively dark inside as well). in general, staff were friendly and reasonably helpful but didn't check on us much.

we ordered the $150 ichi ni nana platter (a huge plate of assorted sashimi) to share between two people. thefoodwas very aesthetic - however the size of the dish was quite overwhelming for the two of us - i recommend sharing between a large group. the fish was quite fresh and i liked how they used brown rice for the sushi. the highlight for me was the cut-up sushi rolls with spicy sauce (i'm not quite sure what to call them). the sauce was delicious and the vegetables also complemented the fish very nicely.

overall, i thoroughly enjoyed my experience at ichi ni nana izakaya - will definitely be back to try out the other dishes here.

i think this was my best experience in a melbournian restaurant so far. everything was excellent. the staff girls were the most friendly, helpful and cheerful i've ever seen. thefoodwas just superb! we tried some crab and dragon rolls as well as the large chef platter. the dishes were presented and explained as they came to the table, and this is something you don't usually encounter. i also loved the decoration there, somewhere between modern, minimalistic and kitsch. it's a great place to eat great food. don't think, just go :)

undeniably beautiful and funky ambience for a japanese restaurant, with outstanding service!foodwas delicious i enjoyed the hot foods - wagyu ribs , gyozas. the salmon skewers however were a tad dry for my liking. can't comment on the raw/cold foods since i couldn't have them but friends thought the sushi rolls were alright not quite as impressive in taste / texture as their presentation.foodportions were quite small considering the higher price. great place to meet up nonetheless , perhaps i'll have to return when raw foods are back on my diet..

definitely had some high expectations coming to the restaurant from friends and having read reviews online. thefoodwas good (however quite overpriced in my opinion) but it did not matter because of the terrible service. drinks took longer than 30 minutes to arrive, even after asking twice for the order. we were led to believe that the waiter did not actually put the drinks order through and only had when we asked for it the second time. some meals did not take long, however, they all arrived at different times. we asked the waiter about it and turns out he had lost our docket, claimed he remembered everything on it, and only put through our order a lot later compared to when we ordered. once we finished the first set of our meal, we proceeded to ask about two dishes that never arrived. turns out he had forgotten those two dishes. we arrived at the venue at 745 and only got all of our meals and drinks at around 915. absolutely would not recommend this restaurant and will not be visiting again. i am usually lenient to service staff on saturday nights, however, this was absolutely unbelievable.

friends of mine invited me here and i am glad they did as i must admit this place was not on my radar.

the restaurant fit out is really cool, we sat in a booth which was comfortable and gave you some privacy.  a solid menu with many great options, staff very helpful and friendly.

we ordered so much food!! haha all were very delicious but the stand outs for me were the hand rolls, in particular the dragon and ebi tempura rolls, they were just so tasty. the soft shell crab was also amazing. the ingredients on all the dishes were fresh and of good quality, presentation was outstanding.

a definite must if you are keen to try this place out, i thoroughly enjoyed thefoodhere.

totally overrated. i would way prefer a cheap asian place from the cbd than this crap.

paid $120 for hardly any food, thefoodwas mainly rice and mayonnaise. we got two chicken yakitori and they were tiny pieces of dry chicken for $16. i asked for a replacement and they came back the same.

augergine was covered in this sweet syrup. the sushi was mainly rice covered in mayonnaise. i would have killed for a sushi hub roll over that.

i honestly left wishing i had had toast for dinner. now i'm $120 down and sat eating ben & jerry's to fill the gap

after all the positives we had heard about this place we were looking forward to dinner with a large group there. however, the excitement dissipated before we were even shown to our table. we were ignored by the person at the front counter for a full five minutes, before he even acknowledged our presence and said "i'll be with you in a minute". fact check - he was never 'with' us at any stage of our interaction.

then to the table in the basement. bottled still water was delivered to the table without our asking. at $8.50 a pop, this was quite presumptious. when we realised that we might actually be charged for the water, we requested tap for top ups. the wait staff managed to mess up even this simple request, and seemed unsure about what was required of them - bring a couple of jugs of water to the table (they arrived with one half filled jug for our table of nine) and top up the empty glasses. i'm not sure how much hospitality experience they had.

on to the menu.

very westernised versions of japanesefood(mcjapanese was how one of our party described it), and ludicrously overpriced for small servings of poor quality product. when paying this kind of money for a japanese meal, it is reasonable to expect a great deal more care than was shown here. sushi should be able to be picked up and eaten whole. these fell apart before they left the platter. the prawn sushi looked like it had been assembled by a work experience student in the morning, and removed from the fridge when ordered. dry, tasteless, lacking wasabi, as was everything that should have had it. eventually, we did see some green paste on a platter - of a dish that didn't need it. and the quality was awful.

why did we need kewpie mayonnaise on everything? it has its place, but not liberally daubed on maki sushi that was already sliced too thin. a small amount to accompany chicken karaage would have sufficed.

the sushi platter also looked like it had been assembled by a work experience student, but one with a sharp knife. the scallop - yes, one - was almost too thin to pick up with chopsticks. and yes, we are experienced enough to do so.

lamb cutlets were tasty, but the quantity and quality were far below what one would expect for $26 for two cutlets.

the drinks should have been easy enough to manage. it's pretty hard to screw up pouring a beer, but there was no head on it. who was running the bar? also, they provided a tap beer, when a bottled one was ordered.

and sake. the essential japanese beverage. we picked a gold medal winner and asked it to be served warm, which it was. and it was served with chilled glasses.

if we wanted to get something to eat while at a nightclub, this would have been ok. that was the vibe.

after paying the $740 bill we went out for dessert. the ice cream we bought was the bestfoodof the night.

probably a good venue for big groups but felt violated eating here with a mate. service was friendly but so constantly intrusive. as soon as you have a piece in your mouth, 2 waitresses are asking what you want next.foodquality is very poor and all pre-prepared. not at all worth the exorbitant prices. big venue with big bills to pay means you’re paying the bills but not getting decent food. miss.

worstfoodi’ve ever had. cancelled my
order for mains after my four entrees

beef and tuna tataki : they were both drowned in one of the most disgusting sauces i’ve ever tasted. i had to literally wipe it off to eat any.
the beef was rock hard, and white fat lines that would be nice if you ordered wagu...but no it’s porterhouse steak which is insane to use for beef tataki. legit the worst dish of my life. the tuna not far behind.

the karage chicken was fine except the four times i had to spit out gristle that was rock hard.

the salmon entree was okay, but again the sauce was so sweet it was sickening. the fish quality was alright tho.

cancelled the rest. left wanting to throw up.
also over priced
venue is super nice tho
