i had read good things about the hanuman chain but left underwhelmed. the food was very average at exorbitant prices. i had the korma and the butter chicken which both lacked any kick or complexity. the wait staff had poor knowledge of the recipes and even the manager reflected that she didn't find the curry was authentic because it had was designed for local tastes. why water down the food givendarwinis so close to asia? i've had far better on the east coast. won't be back.

hanuman is a casual southeast asian eatery indarwincbd which receives a hat in the recent good avoid guide. the spacious restaurant is decorated with hindu iconography and features elaborate magenta lightings and coloured crockery.

food wise, it ranks among the worst and most devious asian food because you will never find them in their source country. the food is considerably sweeter and far accustomed to the australian tastebuds (sweet, sweet, sweet)

i ordered few dishes including fried pork roll, tandoori chicken and green chicken curry. first, the green curry got to be the most feminine and sweetest green curry i had ever tried (even though i have requested for extra spice). i am sure australians are not as sissy as the food suggest. the chicken was overcooked and tough as rubber.

second, the tandoori chicken was ice cold. it was likely that they are roasted in the afternoon and reheated in the evening. the chicken weren’t fresh either.

third, the fried pork roll. goodness gracious. the beancurd skin was absolutely over fried and reeked of cuddled oil (cooking oil which was used for long time). the meat was rocked hat and dry since it was fried too long.

did i mention the rice clumps together?

one-hatted. good food. fairfax media. you’re making australia an international joke.

nice place, spacious layout, located on the paris side of mitchell street - we were greeted by friendly good looking staff, but i can’t comment on the males as they don’t appear to employ any.

the four of us kicked off with a passion-fruit mohito and while discussing the notable irony of whomdarwinwas named after, the entrée’s arrived.

trumpet mushrooms, noice - nonya pork, yarmee - pan dan chicken, oh yeah! all shared over a couple of peroni’s and we concurred it was tasty and cleverly presented.

the mains included tadka dahl, jasmin rice, nan bread and some lamb cutlets, all washed down with a tar & roses pinot griogio* they forgot the pakoras, but that was ok cause we’d had enough and for once the wife checked the bill** only to find the cash register couldn’t add up.

in the words of an ex-us governor – i’ll be back!***

*i recommend this one

**she never does that when buying shoes

i serious couldn't flaw hanuman. being my last night in darwin, i wanted to try one of the best restaurantsdarwinhad to offer. it was rated 4.9 on zomato and now i can finally see why. we ordered the tamarind pork salad and the chicken tikka marsala as entrees. the pork salad was lovely and moist, and there was plenty of dipping sauce- always hard to find in most restaurants.

the chicken tikka was spicy (well i guess it was indian food) but the tahini yoghurt dressing helped. the chicken was moist and juicy and the yoghurt dressing was so creamy and smooth. the lime wedge also gave the dish the punch that it needed. for our shared main we ordered the indian lamb korma with sides of garlic naan and rice.

the garlic naan was buttery and garlicy unlike most indian in perth. it was amazing and the best i've ever had. the lamb korma was so delicious. it was lathered in a rich creamy sauce and covered in chopped nuts and sweet raisins. the lamb was so soft and tender, it literally melted in my mouth. i enjoyed this delicious dish with my rice.

for dessert i decided to order the black rice brulee with a scoop of vanilla icecream, while my friend ordered the chocolate and water chestnut cake with matcha anglaise. the brulee was really well done and the icecream was creamy. to top it off the service was flawless. we will be back and highly recommend to try if your indarwin!!

after seeing how highly this restaurant had scored we decided to come for dinner. it was somewhat disappointing, the service was good but the food was a let down. the goat curry was full of fat and bone, hardly any meat. i then also found a hair in the curry, which i was then told was quite common with goat. ?! it's overpriced for what it is, but suppose choice indarwinis a little limited.

had indian on my mind tonight so decided to give this place a go. has an exceptionally high rating on zomato so felt like i would have to fit this place in during my trip.  on a wednesday we thought that we could just walk in and grab a seat, however it was buzzing with people, and for good reason.  we were told that they had to clear some tables before being seated, so they directed us to a table to wait. we had a couple of menus to peruse over, and decided to order a couple of drinks. we were only waiting no more than 10 mins before a table was found. tonight i was able to try their signature butter chicken dish, their beef vindaloo and garlic naan. the two mains were some of the best indian dishes i've tasted. the butter chicken was fragrant, with spices jumping out, making you question what the composition was. the vindaloo didn't disappoint either, with a nice amount of spice which was perfectly balanced, as not to take away from the spices (being a vindaloo it was hot in nature). i felt like the garlic naan could do with a bit more garlic, however that is my only one little gripe. service was excellent, and the venue is exquisite. prices are towards the upper limit for indian cuisine, however for the flavors provided, the price is justified. will definitely be coming back to this restaurant if i find myself indarwinagain.

love hanuman but i got some take away fried rice that was disappointing. since when does a thai chef fill the fried rice with raw onion? strange. once i picked out all the raw onion (both white and red) the rice was good. have a chat to your chefs jimmy.

do you want some of australia's best thai and nonya food? well, this is it. big call i know, but jimmy shu is a gun chef slash restauranteur and he has this place full almost every night of the year for good reason. sure, he has been on tv and in the foodie magazines but at the end of the day he is successful because he gives the fans what they want. generous serves full of fresh authentic thai flavours. i have eaten here dozens of times over the years and never had a bad meal. the curries in particular are awesome. the seafood is always fresh and the whole fish dishes are a must. personally i love going to hanuman on a hotdarwinnight, ordering a icy cold beer with the duck red curry (best i have tried) and blissing out with the refreshing perfectly balanced flavours. book ahead. you will need to.

best restaurant in darwin. this restaurant was recommended to us so we took advantage of going while we were indarwinand we were delighted with the food. my husband had the hanuman oysters which were spectacular - different but good. we shared beef massaman and chicken and cashews which were superb. service cannot be faulted. can recommend.

what a delight - we have returned several times. having just arrived indarwinwe were looking for a tasty dinner in a comfortable atmosphere. we were recommended hanuman by some friends who said they had returned several times and, since they are foodies like us, we trusted them.
we are glad we did.
now, hanuman have two "sides" to their menu: thai and indian. we were a bit concerned when we saw this but shouldn't have been. we had the thai side that night... and have been back at least three more times since for the green chicken curry, duck salad, jungle curry etc etc. delicious! we have not even tried their indian yet, so that's next on the list, but we keep getting stuck trying new thai dishes... so many spices and herbs!
the cocktails were marvellous, the wine list is ok, and the service was above average for darwin. we thought the prices were a little high ($26 for a green curry) but we have since learned that these are regulardarwinprices (most places serving mains well over $30). they have indoor and outdoor seating, the outdoor being quite a nice setting for a relaxed dinner. overall, hanuman is "very good" and, after visiting a number of other restaurants around town now, certainly above average for darwin.

i've read all the reviews befor we decided to go there. we didn't book a table in advance as we were not sure when we will be back todarwinfrom our day trip. so, when we arrived earlier than expected we decided to check if this place has any available tables. i guess that if we were told that there are no places we wouldn't be that disappointed. however, we waited for couple of minutes to be seated but they simply didnt pay attention, then were told that some places in front of the window are available but from the first glance it was obvious that we are not really welcome. we followed the lady and she pointed to seats that were less than a meter away from another couple who enjoyed their meals already, so it would ruin privacy for us and them but at the same time the restaurant was 80% empty and all the seats in front of windows were not occupied. i am quite sure that they didn't have bookings for those places. we asked if we can seat just one meter to the right but she said that everything is booked. than we asked to have a look at the menu as she brought only bar menu but she said that if we are not sure that we like to stay we should follow her and look at the menu next to the counter. we went to the counter and she left us there immediately witjout saying a word so we waited to be served again but no one asked if we'd like to order a,nything. we left disappointed with a strong feeling that we shouldn't stay and buy anything from those snobby guys. we wanted to have a nice dinner but the approach demonstrated by the employees made us feel that we wouldn't enjoy it there
