sublime!. four of us settled down with an anticipation for an evening of glorious flavours. we were not disappointed!
our host, ruel, had an intimate knowledge of the menu and was able to answer all our questions without hesitation. with his input, we settled on a tasting plate, the signature oyster dish and the money bags. all dishes exceeded our respective palate's expectation, with the oysters being an absolute standout. you must have them if you dine here.
for mains we shared the meen moolie, slipper lobster pong gari, pork belly and beef vindaloo. omg, where do i start? the meen moolie had a glorious yellow colour, was delicate in flavour and the barramundi was cooked to perfection. the slipper lobster looked a little haphazard on the plate, but on our taste buds it was a sensation. the pork belly was beautiful, with no huge influx of salt and the gentle hints of cinnamon and star anise doing a little waltz in your mouth. the beef vindaloo was also a highlight. it had the right amount of fire, with an exquisite and evenly balanced amount of aromatic spices. the straw poll of the table was a resounding excellent!
although we were bursting at the seams, we reluctantly (yeah right!) ordered the dessert tasting plate. you have a choice of 3 items from the menu, from which we chose black rice brulee pandan, sri lankan love cake and chocolate water chestnut cake. the brulee was simply the best "varietal" brulee i have ever tasted. the sri lankan love cake was perfectly balanced in texture and the ginger component and the chocolate water chestnut cake challenged us with its complexity. if i could, i would return to just have the dessert plate for my main!
so to coin a famous australian expression when iin darwin, "do yourself a favour" and make a dinner at hanuman a must do on your list of places to eat.
oh, the only constructive criticism i would offer up to management (and yes, it is being nitpicky)...you should use tablecloths (they currently don't use any) that are of the same high quality as your napkins. after the utensils and plates used to eat our mains were cleared and our dessert order was placed, the dessert utensils were laid on the table amongst the (admittedly, we made it) mess from our mains. if, for whatever reason, tablecloths are not an option, then a wipe of the table once main menu items have been cleared should be considered. however, this would not stop me from recommending hanuman as an essential dining experience for those visiting darwin.
