steak wasgoodbut not of cypress quality. the layered chocolate cake tasted like betty crocker which isn't bad but not what i'd want at a restaurant. also my water remained empty for most of the dinner.

omg. my wife and i were back in charleston for our 25th anniversary. we have been back many times since our honeymoon in 1990. there are dozens of excellent restaurants in charleston. we decided to dine one evening at halls chophouse after reading reviews and talking to others. we were expectinggoodfood andgoodservice. what we got was the quietest table upstairs in the back thanks to telling them about our anniversary when making the reservation. we were greeted at the door with welcome and "happy anniversary". then we met brandon our awesome host/waiter and his co-wait/hostess kassandra. wow. professional knowledgeable staff. available, never intrusive, always as welcoming as having your favorite friends serve you dinner. started with the perfect wine brandon recommended after hearing our preferences. then came amazing stuffed mushrooms to share as an appetizer followed by aged steaks and unbelievably generous sides of creamed spinach and corn. stuffed beyond belief, we asked for the check. it came with a complimentary huge bread pudding just for our anniversary. this is a meal we will remember. it's not even the place we had planned to go back to on saturday for our anniversary! this was just a place we decided to try on the thursday before. unbelievable flavors, perfectly seared aged and succulent steaks, beautiful ambiance. well done!! bravo to all the staff, the chef, staff and especially brandon and kassandra (sure hope we are close to spelling your name correctly) thank y'all for making this a meal to remember!!!!

family owner narcissism, money oriented, service poor, chain steakhouse like outback at morton's prices. when we first entered we were aggressively greeted by the owners which are brothers. tone down the greeting! we were seated at a booth which was nice and the table was moved out so we could sit down. our server was jon and he really disappointed. the service we received was nothing like the high quality, team oriented approach of the peninsula grill. when i asked for a1 sauce jon said we don't carry that here but i can run across the street to get it. i could tell he really didn't want to get it. hall family, just buy a bottle of a1 or heinz 57 for those customers that want it. after all, we are the ones paying $100 a head for supper. she crab soup was verygoodbut light on crab meat, we split that. we also split a full hall's chopped salad which was nothing special. the seasonal salads at longhorn are much better. the salads we had at peninsula grill were outstanding so we expected the same here. we ordered the porterhouse to split cooked medium with a loaded baked potato and asparagus with bearnaise sauce. the steak was not trimmed properly (fat on the side and tendons) and was not cooked right. the outside was burned which gave the steak a carbon taste. potato was nothing special again chain steakhouse quality at an $8 side price. i have to admit the asparagus with sauce was verygoodbut this is a steakhouse so you come for the steak. i had the 434 pineapple martini which was verygoodbut the second one was notgoodsomething with grey goose and champagne. flaming caramel cake was again nothing special and we had to pay $15 for a pot of french press coffee. go for the coconut cake at the peninsula grill. we asked for a less expensive regularly brewed coffee but the server seemed put out about making a regular pot. french press coffee wasgoodbut $15 for a pot of coffee? finally, our server jon was constantly trying to take our steak, etc before we were done without asking us. is he trying to turn over the table quickly? this place seems just money oriented and quite honestly family owner narcissism.

here is the dishonest and incompetent cap off of the night. jon our server first gave us our check and it was very low so i noticed our $68 porterhouse steak and $8 sides were left off. i got the busy server's attention and said to him i'd be glad to have a free steak but he might want to consider adding the steak to our check. when the check came he added a $85 dry aged porterhouse to the bill which we never ordered! the $85 porterhouse is not even on the menu! what is this bait and switch! totally dishonest. we spoke to the manager devin and he offered to take the entire steak off the check which i did not disagree with. when the server and management saw we had a poor experience there was a lot of insincere and phony posterior kissing.

overall, this a chain type steakhouse like longhorn that is trying to be a morton's or ruth's chris with a lot of window dressing. it does not deliver. i truly do not understand how they got to be number 1 on trip advisor in charleston, sc. i would not recommend for a romantic dinner as you are always speaking to a hall family member and it is loud inside.

my suggestions to management: 1. buy a $5 box of equal and keep it on hand for customers that want it, 2. buy a bottle of a1 and heinz 57 for $4 each and have them on hand for customers that want them, 3. enroll server in humility training, 4. change beef supplier, that was notgoodquality beef!, 4. brothers, it is not necessary to accost every patron at the front door, let your food and service speak for itself, 5. revamp your chopped salad recipe, 6. retrain back of house how to cook a steak.

beyond superb. as an anniversary gift, our daughter and son-in-law arranged for us to have dinner at hall's chop house on saturday, oct 19th. the ambiance of the evening began with a gracious greeting at the door by one of the owners. the service was impeccable, the atmosphere romantic, and the food beyond superb. we like our steak well done, a curse to most chefs. our meat was not at all pink and still succulent. it is very unusual to find a restaurant can deliver a large piece of beef well cook to perfection. the lobster mac and cheese was luscious. the presentation of the head lettuce salad looked asgoodas it tasted. the personal touch of the greeting by the owner, the impeccable service, and the delicious food is a winning combination. it seems like everyone that works there love their job and their contentment is apparent. we can certainly recommend this restaurant without any hesitation.

halls is a great option if you’re in charleston and looking for agoodsteak, but they also do some classic southern dishes quite well – so make sure you look through the whole menu, and don’t skip straight to the steak page!

hall's flophouse. okay, i've read the reviews for this restaurant - and i know my review will not be well received.
here for restaurant week, 3 for $40. i had:
she crab soup
8 oz filet cooked medium rare
and chocolate ice cream
the soup was too salty, the filet was cooked perfectly and very soft/buttery, and the chocolate ice cream was meh. patrons have to pay for extra sides, we decided on whipped potatoes. sauces like bernaise sauce or steak sauce is an extra $3/person. so, the restaurant charges you extra bucks for things that normally should simply come with a meal. the whipped potatoes were soupy and sweet. i would have preferred potatoes that don't drip thru my fork and add salt for flavoring. the chocolate ice cream was melted. in addition, do you know what happens to a container of ice cream in the freezer when it goes untouched for a month? it develops a layer of goo on top. happens to everyone. except in a restaurant - one would expect them to scrape off that old layer off before serving.

finally, the biggest problem i have (which i'm sure that many will disagree with) is that i don't want to be asked over and over again how my meal tastes. the question was asked 16 times from beginning to end (twice going out the door by two different people). we were also asked if we wanted pepper on our food (when the pepper and salt shakers are already on the table vs. a server walking around with a pepper mill) - and they brought out the check before dessert was finished by all. in addition, the server asked us to cut our filet in the middle to check to see if it was cooked as requested; except, i want to cut it and eat it the way i want, not the way the server wants. if there's a problem, i would inform the server as much.

anyway, the "service" was waaay over the top and unnecessary. i just wanted to enjoygoodfood w/ attention at the right time (i.e., topping off water, asking for another drink or refill when almost empty, asking once or twice how everything tastes - but around halfway thru the entree....)

some will rave about the atmosphere and will like the attention. it was simply not my cup of tea.

for the clueless. i don't want to immediately come across as a snob, but i know a thing or two about food as a chef of 15 years. i am in the business world now and have enjoyed fine dining across the country. halls is one of the most shining examples of social hob-nobbery with nothing to support the hype that i have ever seen. apparently the old and new money in charleston loves to make themselves seen, in an atmosphere so pretentious and overbearing that one wants to vomit before the appetizer has arrived. the appetizer, by the way was poorly executed. the beet salad was flavorless and hacked up, not finely diced. the sauce was a cold and grainy, not to mention again flavorless, a bree, melted with cream. it was terrible. the steak was ok but was less than enjoyable when accompanied by the halls' over-reaching and assuming behavior. i assume that because i present well and was wearing a rolex, they thought i was a target. in my mid thirties, i don't like to be called "baby" a dozen times and hugged more than three. are we in a popularity contest or out to dinner? all in all, if you don't knowgoodfood and want to over-pay for average food, knock yourself out. otherwise, steer clear. the halls are a deplorable family from what i could surmise, serving up the emperor's new clothes to a bunch of clueless want-to-be's.

nightmare: got there with reservations. waited for 1 hour and 20 minutes. never got muffins or anything. finally, asked about our meal (which was ordered about 15 minutes after our arrival) and got an excuse that a 12 seater came in right before us. does that mean your under staffed on a sun brunch? continued to wait and finally got up and left. mrs. hall saidgoodbye to us. never offered to fix the problem. on the way out, her son had the nerve to tell us that they take care of their customers. i was baffled at how that could be true considering we never ate.
