a unique experience. i have been going to gypsy tapas since they opened some years ago and i have only praise for this establishment. having lived in spain for a few years, i can confidently say that this place has a tasty choice of a variety of dishes both for vegetarians and meat eaters, a fun, relaxed european vibe, complimented with a great selection of local live music. the owners have plently of experience both in australia and overseas, and you only need to talk to them to find this out, as they are very approachable, much unlike other restaurants i have been to. down to earth, definetely. however, it pains me to read some of these "reviews" here because it seems that
a) some people have no idea of what "tapas" are
b) they go to a gourmet restaurant very hungry
c) are too conservative for this restaurant and too old to go out.
d) they don't know how living social vouchers work.
the term "tapa" means literally "lid" in spanish. the sense of the word in this case mean "snack" or "appetizer". gypsy's tapas are bigger than the tapas that are usually served in spain. the beauty with this restaurant is that their tapas are not simply a sardine on a piece of bread, they're gourmet selections, and they're all different and tasty.
if i'm hungry, i am definetely not going to go to a gourmet restaurant and complain after that the meals are too small. i know gourmet restaurants, i have been to a few, and they tend to serve smaller serves than a fish and chip shop. with gypsy tapas, generally three to four tapas will fill me up (and i am a big guy). it's a time to share with others, going out to gypsys, it's not for starving family feed time.
i got into living social this year and i purchased vouchers for many things, one being gypsys, i used them before the due date (which is clearly stated when you buy them) when i rang for my booking two months ago, i had to do it twice, not because they refused me, but because they cannot take too many a week, that was their helpful explanation. they get paid by living social according to how many vouchers they get, at least that's what i understand. gypsys have to make a living. it makes sense. and it's fantastic they're still going strong in their business!
the staff are young, gorgeous, friendly and helpful. and at the very least they smile at you and talk. more than i can say for a lot of eateries in perth. some places have no idea of what "customer service" really means. i also love themusicand i do have tinnitus (google that) so i won't stand next to the speakers if a band is playing. i am a sensible person and i can talk and ask to be seated somewhere else.
atmosphere in a restaurant is something rare and gypsy tapas has it, no matter what people say. it seems that most restaurants are too conservative and up themselves. not to mention pricey! we need more places like this, but i doubt it we will get them, because there is a vision behind the business and that is what creates a unique experience in fremantle.
