not a good experience, unfortunately. it may have been because it was mother's day and we couldn't get a table until 2pm, but the food was at best ordinary, and in the case of my tarakihi in batter, chips and salad, it was largely inedible. the reason, i suspect, is the oil in which the battered fish was cooked may already have been turned off (it being mid-afternoon), and the result was the oil had soaked up into each fillet. the first fillet was not helped by having a lot of dark flesh (something you should never get in a good restaurant). i did my best to down the fish (which was reasonably fresh), but after a few bites of the second fillet my wife looked at me in alarm and asked if i was okay. i felt sick. the salad was soggy and had all the appearance of having been made very early in the day and not kept properly cooled. the chips were fine, in fact crisp. i managed to get as far as i did with the meal by using a lot of salt and pepper (i never usually apply salt for health reasons) and dipping the fish in the tartar sauce in the hope it would counter the greasy taste. my wife tried a small piece of the fish and said it was disgusting. she wasn't exactly thrilled with her seafood spaghetti, which was not exactly overwhelmed with seafood. i mentioned the fish to the woman taking our money, but she said i was the only complaint they had had on a busy day. she asked if there had been a standard food check, but there was none. there was no offer of a refund, but to the restaurant's credit the waitress rang us on our way home and offered a $20 voucher, which she promised to post out. we had been to the same place last december and it was fine, so either things have gone off since then, or it was just the result of a busy day. my advice togustois don't take reservations so late in the day if you can't manage them properly.

we have been togustoa few times now and it has become the new favourite. beautiful view, great food for a reasonable price and superlovely service staff who are attentive but not overbearing.
something that i particularly love about tgis restaurant is that the tables aren't all crammed together and the ceiling is higb so you can actually hear those at your table even when the restaurant is busy.
on this occasion we got the scallops with mussel fritters and the beetroot pasta. if we could suggest anything, it would be to add a couple more vege or vegan options - that would make this place absolute perfection!!

lovely. i go togustofrom time to time, and it is wonderful to sit by the windows in the sun and enjoy a glass of wine with their antipasto platter. the atmosphere is quiet and unassuming, which is rare, and the wait staff are very polite and effective. this is a good place for business lunches, as you know you will never be let down.

went togustofor a brunch - the price was outrageous for an omelette and it was nothing special. let's just say that i waited for a long time for an "average omelette" that should not have cost over $20. ridiculous. service was average - a nice view but i think this place needs to step up if they want to charge the prices they are. i don't mind paying for something if it is something i cannot get anywhere else. i don't want to overpay for just average.

went togustorestaurant as part of a company christmas dinner. service was poor, waitresses should have been assigned to our table to take drink orders. food was ok, husband had lamb shanks which were bland, smothered in gravy and the potato mash was not good. my steak was nicely cooked and that was all i have to say about that. my profiteroles were hard and i had to use a fork to hold it still so i could cut it. overall not a good dining experience at all. restaurant was full, understaffed and waitresses were shabby looking and not friendly. there will be no repeat visit!

very disappointing. my first time atgustoand i had heard and read rave reviews. i am not a great foodie or cook but i could do better at home and not pay $38 for a main. angus steak was cooked as requested but seemed like a supermarket steak with not even a half teaspoon of jus (devoid of any hint of truffle?). capsicum jam was absent, potato cake obviously microwaved and very hard and toffee like for about a cm into the middle, and worst of all, beans obviously packet frozen rather than fresh, boiled and devoid of taste. the menu read very differently to end product. hubby's mussels described as "mussels in tomato sauce". thought it interesting an 8pm booking was considered too late although waitresses very good and to their credit offered a discount when i was honest about my experience. i never say anything even if disappointed but it was so bad, i felt i had to and fumbled my way through an honest response to "how was everything?". perhaps a change of hands/chef since previous reviews? as i said, i am not difficult to please but expect more than a sunday night tea...especially when a restaurant is charging high end prices.

dined atgusto01/03/2013 saturday night.
food was highly recommendable and well worth the visit from auckland's north shore.
the standout for me apart from the fine dining was our waitress.a charming lady with a beautiful smile and delightful manner.she was obviously a people person and charming too boot.i would love to see more ladies take on the challenge of waitressing as opposed to the younger ones who don't really enjoy a chat while serving.
well done hope she is still there next time i return.

went togustofor dinner last night 10th march 2012.....fantastic. the location is the best in town, the service was first class...our receipt shows we were served by kimberley so i would like to congratulate her on the best service we have had anywhere....friendly, attentive and smiley......well done.
i could not fault my meal in any way. presentation was nice and the food was cooked to perfection. my entree of raw bluff oysters in the shell was delicious and my main of fish of the day snapper was perfect.
my husband had the entree of garlic prawns...perfect also, and the wakanui steak for his main was the best he had eaten anywhere. it was cooked exactly as he had asked and was presented very nicely....mouthwatering in fact... dessert of tiramisu... what more can i say, was just what we needed to top of a meal that i would say would be the best in town. we would recommendgustoand have to say it was heaven not to have loud music booming out as seems to happen in many restaurants these days.

gusto - was certainly an experience of two halves. i was in taranaki on business and decided ongustofor dinner. fantastic location on the water with a beautiful outlook, and weird jumping fish in the harbour. started with a nice glass of pinot gris. i ordered the wakanui blue steak with beetroot and kumara, noting the price tag of $39 thinking it must be good. i was asked how well done i wanted the steak by the slightly awkward waitress, and said medium rare (as if there's any other way to have steak!).

the meal came out very quickly, although the presentation was quite odd and not particularly appetising. basically a quartered baked kumara sitting in a pool of beetroot and steak juice with a fairly large steak on top. the steak was very over done, and after i made a couple of cuts, i decided because i was paying $39, i wanted it perfect and sent it back. the second one came out slightly less over done than the previous, but still well over cooked. i must admit i was expecting perfection based on the $39 price tag, so was a little pickier than usual.gustoagreed to reduce the price on the steak down to a more reasonable $25 which i accepted as i was starving by this point.

i somewhat nervously ordered the ginger and vanilla creme brulee for desert. it was a nice textured brulee, although i had to question the chunks of ginger in the bottom, and the homemade chocolate coffee beans and honey walnuts on the side as an odd choice of accompaniment.

all in all, the meal was ok, with the beautiful outlook making up a bit for the poor presentation and quality of the main meal. i left thinking thatgustoneed to pick a style - local pub serving good honest pub grub at a fair price, or fine dining restaurant with top notch food. the service and casual wait staff weren't in keeping with the menu, or the style of restaurant, nor was the food up to scratch for the price tag. i would go back, but only if i thought they could either up the ante or lower the pricing - i sincerely hope they were just having a bad night!

bornova
