best deep dish pizza i've ever had! gino's east had fantastic service and even better food. we had an odd situation where we need a pizza that was half vegetarian and half meat lover's, and they did agreatjob, the halves were very different, but both were delicious. it does take a little bit of time, both to get a table, and for those tantalizing deep dish pizzas to cook, so maybe not the right spot if you're in a hurry, but if you have the time, it is well worth spending it at gino's east. the atmosphere, especially the names written on the wall (you can probably find mine if you look long enough), as well as the history add an extra dimension to the experience for those who enjoy such things. stop reading this and head there now! ;)

it wasgreatto get a chance to be in chicago and eat at gino’s east original location again. surprisingly, we were able to get right in on a wednesday. we had agreatserver and their deep dish pizza (meat lovers) took a while (one hour), but it was worth it. we enjoyed it.

great restaurant to sit, relax and eat agreatburger before your plane takes off. tables are a little close to each other and a bit loud, but they serve delicious burgers with your choice of thin fries or home made chips.

stay away!! must read!. after awesome reviews and recommendations from friends to try this place we decided to stop by. we are from ny and visiting chicago for the first time.

the place looks cool with writing on the walls and it's very clean. friendly staff also. it was loud for our us though and the tables were wobbly.

we knew we would have to wait about an hour for a deep dish pizza which was fine because it was "worth the wait."

so we started with the spinach and artichoke dip which was awesome. didn't take like spinach and the cheese was awesome. i'm not a huge fan of spinach but i would order this again.

place our order and began counting down. pizza finally came and it smelt delicious. one meat lovers (forget exact name) and four cheese. everything wasgreatuntil they told me they put spinach in my four cheese. i said i didn't order that with spinach. they server guy pushes me to try it anyway and he would send over our waitress.
i couldn't eat my deep dish pizza i just waited an hour for. i would have tried to suffer through the spinach taste but it was just too over powering to do so. the waitress did feel bad and asked if she could get me anything else. but by that time my two other family members were almost done eating and were beginning to feel full.
the waitress asked me if i could eat some of the meat pizza that was left and i said no i ordered the cheese pizza separately because i don't like anything in the meat pizza. we didn't have time to order another pizza and wait another hour so my family could watch me eat.

the purpose of eating out is to eat together. so i got to watch my aunt and cousin eat their dinner. i left hungry. granted they didn't charge me for my pizza. great. but why should i pay for something i didn't eat?

as i said it's loud inside so make sure you repeat your order 2x times before the waitress walks away.
on our way out the same waitress was boxing up another tables order and knocked a soda over on the lady's lap. the tables are wobbly--be careful you could leave hungry and wearing soda.
spend $54 with tip and $27 on parking for 3 well 2 people to eat. no worth it. stay away!

rude and not good. we went late to miss the line up, they let us in no problem, but neglected to mention that we would be rushed through a not pleasant meal. as soon as we sat down the waiter came rushing over to take our order telling us we had to order right away as the kitchen was closing. he stood impatiently while we tried to figure out what and how much we should have. we got some apps and a deep dish pizza to share. the apps were notgreat- tasted undercooked and from a box. pretty sure i could have gone to the grocery store and made the same thing (but better cooked) myself.

the pizza arrived and we had about 15 minutes with it before we asked for another bottle of wine and were told the bar was closing. they still gave us the wine but the waiter was snarky about it. are serving our wine we very quickly got the feeling they wanted us to leave - might have had something to do with them dropping off the bill so soon after delivering the pizza. we wanted to leave and go back to our place to eat the pizza and drink the wine in peace so asked if we could take the bottle with us (apparently you are allowed to do this in illinois) and we were told "no we don't do that here". in the end we were made so uncomfortable that we basically chugged the last of the wine and boxed most of the pizza.

the pizza was also horrible - undercooked and pretty much all cheese and no other toppings or crust. not impressed. highly recommend going elsewhere for your deep dish pizza experience.

a new, dedicated follower. as a recent north carolina transplant, i had my deep-dish cherry popped at original gino’s east – and i’ve been honest and true to the superior street restaurant ever since.

i’m embarrassed to say the wife and i had lived in chicago for over four months before striking out to try our first deep-dish pie. rumors of chewy bread-like crusts and soggy samplings kept us away, so it took my brother coming into town before we wandered over from streeterville to give them the chance.

we stood outside for about 20 minutes on a busy friday evening around 5:00pm – we had showed up early with hopes of getting a table...seems most of chicago was thinking the same thing.

once we were seated upstairs, we were surrounded by graffiti-covered walls, featuring names, initials and declarations of past loves, all in white paint, chalk and markers. just a heads’ up: the place is dark. deepest, darkest-of-caves dark. we found ourselves passing the candle around the table as each of us tried to read the menu.

first rule of any deep-dish; pack a lunch if you arrive hungry. these monsters take a solid 30-45 minutes to show up tableside once you’ve ordered – our server let us know, in advance, to expect the wait.

on our most recent outing, we ordered a medium chicago firehouse, featuring a hot-and-spicy bottom of patty-style sausage, fire roasted red peppers and thin slices of red onions.

first and foremost, and despite our preconceived fears, these deep-dish pies are not loaves of bread covered in runny tomato sauce – the crust was amazingly flaky and tender, and just thick enough to hold the massive layer of toppings. the sauce-to-topping ratio was perfect, and the cheese was distinctive and had agreatpull. the firehouse’s sausage certainly brings a little heat to the party and has become our favorite.

while a medium is certainly enough for two people – you’ll probably end up taking two to three slices home anyway. and at $25 for a medium pie of six slices, it’s definitely turns in to a two night dining experience .... re-heated, these pizzas are just as good as they were table side.

yes, we're eaten around the corner at "that other guy's place', but we keep coming back to gino's east for the fun atmosphere, awesome pies and superior service.

enjoy!

i had the lunch special (salad, mini pepperoni pizza and a drink). while the price wasgreat(unbelievable low), i definitely got what i paid for- subpar food. the salad was fresh, but the pizza was reminiscent of a tv dinner frozen pizza. needless to say, it was not worthy of being called "chicago style" deep dish.

the pizza from gino’s is everything that isgreatabout the chicago style pizza. the crust is always amazing with it’s buttery, flaky texture and the whole sausage patty is such an interesting take on the sausage pizza. you could a large bite of sausage every time you rip a chunk of pizza off.

after looking on urban spoon for pizza places in chicago, my son & i decided on gino's. the wait was maybe 15 minutes and we were sat upstairs. it has agreatfamily friendly, casual atmosphere. graffiti on the walls...we added our names to of course! we ordered a deep dish pizza...(which they do warn you that it takes 45 minutes to an hour) but is definitely worth it. priced good in my opinion too. highly recommend!!

staff is great. appetizers are great, especially since you have to wait 45 mins for a deep dish. spinach sticks and toasted ravioli are tasty fried starters. however, the deep dish pizza was terrible! the sauce tasted canned (boring seasoning) and the "famous sausage" tasted very gamey to be world class. still, greatservice staff, tasty apps, and they offer local micro brew on tap, so not completely awful. just don't go for the deep dish pizza!
