marchesi café, which is part of the georgianrestaurantat harrods, is quite simply the most fashionable place to drink, dine and be seen this month in london. let me tell you why…

a few carefully selected items of clothing. well, the georgianrestaurantin harrods was like a fine lady who already looked elegant but fancied a new look that was in keeping with her usual style…i mean she’s been open since 1913 so after over a hundred years it was time for a bit of a change.

ahhh...those january sales (which rather confusingly no longer start in january) love them or hate them, they've got to be done. i mean, what if you missed out on a total bargain because you couldn't be bothered to brave the scrum? perhaps, by total coincidence the shoe gods had decided to reduce the louboutins or the choos by 50%, and that perfect size four and a half was just waiting for me  and where else would we head to the sales? harrods, the most famous department store in london, perhaps even the world. i actually had one item in mind as we headed to the hallowed halls of that famous shop. my sony rx100 camera has served me very well in the past year of blogging but with all our travel plans coming up this year, mr s and i were looking to upgrade and invest in a brand new camera.  to be honest the whole process was pretty overwhelming and after an hour in the technology department we were very much in need of a afternoon treat. we actually didn't end up buying anything as we were advised to return the following weekend when there would be an extra 10% off.  our tea was booked at harrods' poshest restaurant, the georgian . and we sat ensconced in throne-like red-velvet chairs. i hadn't been to the georgian in ages, but my parents used to the take me there for a sunday roast from the buffet.  in collaboration with interior designer, christopher guy harrison, the beautifully elegantrestauranthas had a bit of a refresh. the designer was inspired by the 1920s and 1930s to create a dining room that is both modern and classic and not all stuffy. i loved the mismatched chairs, particularly the carved wood ones, and the gorgeous hanging lights.  tea began, as all teas should, with a glass of champagne. you may know harrods have their own brand of champagne which proudly stands besides all the premium brands, and of course tastes lovely.  for my tea i chose blackcurrant and hibiscus poured from a beautiful silver pot. mr s, who is more of a proper tea drinker than m

thisrestaurantoffers a great place for early morning endeavors or the for the lonely evenings. the sandwiches are delicious. the servers are friendly. the tea and the coffee needs a special mention as it is both savory and delicious. the service can get sloppy sometimes. the ambiance is chilled out.

mother and i visited here as it was a christmas present. we were quite nervous about it being too formal but we needn't have..

thisrestaurantis located inside harrods and its quite big with lovely bright decor. the staff were so nice and explained to us how it worked. we each had a glass of champagne. it's a bit like a carvery, where you go up to the buffet and they slice the meats for you and you choose your potatoes and veg. it was really tasty and dessert was also on the buffet stand, lots of little bits to choose from.

we listened to the piano playing calm music and people watched. we dressed up but there's no need to go overboard, as there were some people wearing jeans! the only annoying thing was that because its a special place to go, there are lots of birthday meals in here and we must have heard the piano play 'happy birthday' about 6 times whilst eating! it's nice of them to do it though, i suppose.

i would go back for a special meal as its not snobby at all and is a very impressive place to take someone.

available from 3pm, the afternoon tea menu at the georgianrestaurantat harrods consists of just one option - freshly cut sandwiches, home-baked english scones, selection of tea pastries from the harrods pâtisserie, choice of tea from harrods own tea gardens all for £26 per person. however, off the menu, they do offer the individual component parts of the full afternoon tea separately, along with a choice of tea of course, for £12 each. we opted for one serving of the freshly cut sandwiches: cucumber and minted yoghurt, smoked salmon with caper butter, ham and piccalilli, cheddar cheese and branston pickle, truffled egg salad with cress and one serving of the home-baked english scones: served with clotted cream, rose petal jelly and strawberry preserves . in a nutshell… a pleasant enough experience, but not as good as some of the better afternoon tea offerings in the capital. 5.5/10 georgianrestaurantat harrods fourth floor, 87-135 brompton road, knightsbridge, london, sw1x 7xl
