surprise, surprise!. i wanted to try this place as i had heard a lot of hype about it. i had the bad idea of picking friday night to go and try it, good thing i called ahead to make a reservation, i couldn't get thetimei wanted, but still thought it would be a good idea. when we got there the place was packed, the girl up front was very nice about my impatience and soon enough our table was ready. im glad to say that from there on everything was marvelous. i took a look at the menu and thought it was a little pricey, not as much as other high end places though, and the food was simply delicious, the service was almost perfect. i had the "bife" which had the most amazing taste and would think its one of the best in el paso, my wife had a salad, the proscuitto salad, i think and it looked and tasted amazing. i ordered some wine and was surprised it wasn't as expensive as i thought it would be. overall i was extremely surprised at the whole experience, it was completely worth thetimeand money for that meal, oh the dessert was awesome too.
go garufa!

poor service, poor food quality, overcharged.. my husband planned a nice lunch for us at a restaurant we've never been to before. garufa gives off a high quality restaurant feel, but it stops there.

the service was not the worst we've ever had, but it was not up to where a "fancy" restaurant should be. our server did not check on us at a timely manner. he did provide us with plenty of bread and water, but that was about it. he over charged us $5.00 on my husband's dish, and he charged me for an extra topping on my burger.

the food was of low quality. the bread was not fresh and neither were the sauces that came with it. the sauces were coagulated, which gives us the impression that it is not fresh. the empanadas were over seasoned with cumin. my burger was obviously of poor quality meat. it was very fatty and greasy. the bread that my burger was on was not fresh (again). my husband ordered the shrimp pasta (which was supposed to be $10, but again the server charged us $15), and it had a weird taste to it. it was almost sour, like the cream sauce had been stored for a longtimeor was not refrigerated properly so it had gone sour. we ended throwing our leftovers away after the server did not pack my leftover fries!

if you are looking for a place to drink wine and have a nice conversation with your date, then this might be the place for you. make sure you don't order any food because you'll be very disappointed.

review; garufa, el paso, tx........ samuel breceda, the manager 0f garufa in el paso, texas, is by far the most disconnected-to-diner manager i have ever known. i took my son and daughter-in-law to the restauran`t this evening to celebrate my son's birthday and my husband's passing on the same date - february 7, 2013. we expected more than we got. the waiter was very professional except when my daughter-in-law complained that the steak was not rare. he told her to cut it in the middle and she would see that it was rare. it was a bit red but not at all juicy. i order the 44$ special ribeye and it was also overcooked. an d it was not juicy; it was dry. had i gone to a competing restaurant, less expensive to say the least, i would have enjoyed the meat alot more. i didn'tsay anything and ate the steak. i didn't want to wait for another steakand i also thought that if it's not good on the first try, it probably won't be good on the second. a restaurant of excellence doesn't fail on the first try.....at the end of the dinner, and after paying the bill, i decided to give a review 0f the plates we had had. maybe nexttimethe chef would get it right with other diners. the waiter called the manager and he heard my complaint with no expression on his face. his answer was: "if you didn't like the steak why did you eat it?" he made no attempt to empathize with us, the diners, saying something that would have made it sound like he cared. he just questioned why we ate the meat and then, "what did we want him to do? no pr, no understanding, no initiative to make some kind of amend. we left very dissatisfied fom the restaurant.

garufa. i really enjoyed the communication as soon as i walked in. they were very welcoming and very organized. as soon as we sat down they asked for our drink order and gave us enoughtimeto look over and be informed about the menu. waiter was very professional and well informed. had the tenderloin, absolutely delicious. atmosphere was perfect with live music on the second floor. i truly enjoyed the experience and can't wait to go back.

the real review. its a shame that some people in el paso that own restaurants post unfair and unfounded reviews about other restaurants. i guess thats how they run their business.
i personally love garufa, im not employed by them or related to the owner. just hate stupid people give false reviews.
i guess when the restaurant is always full you are going to have haters. keep up the great work garufa....
ohh and i love the sliders... cant wait to have some at the bar with my favorite beer.

great steak. i had been at garufa once before, and it was very good, but nothing to write home about. it was a crowded day, and the service wasn't brilliant, but the food was great.

after following garufa's facebook page i saw a post about an aged ribeye steak, so i told my wife we were visiting garufa that night. thistimeit was a little less crowded than the lasttime(a few months had passed), the service was better, a lot better, and the atmosphere was relaxed and elegant. but the steak, (we both ordered it) was amazing, it was so tender and full of flavor. the only drawback is that it is a little on the expensive side, but totally worth it.

good job garufa, keep it up!

terrible waiters. i first went to garufa restaurant during a holiday meeting-meal for a local hospital. my initial impression was similar to the many positive remarks made by others here, generous portions of very tasty food. i have since been back six more times; eachtimethe experience was less and less, to where i will never go back.
the most recent visit was last monday night, for my son's 24th birthday. when we made the reservations they asked if it was for a special event and they told us that a special chocolate cake would be served. this was my son's firsttimeto the restaurant and he ordered the camaron pasta with sun dried tomatoes and shrimp in a cream sauce and a side of asparagus. the sauce seemed old and reheated, like school glue with absolutely no taste. the small-to-medium shrimp numbered a total of three and there were very few asparagus.

the large tenderloin that i ordered was very good, much better than the very tough large ribeye that i had had on my previous visit.

the reason that i will never go back has to do with the very poor service that gets worse with each visit. they have a number of middle-aged-to-elderly waiters that seem to have suffered strokes, are deaf and/or with markedly limited mental capacity. i can't tell you how many times they would just grab a half finished plate or partially filled beverage glass from in front of you without asking if your done, yet they will leave an empty plate laying on the table for most of the meal. their younger waiters are much better, but alas, there are very few of them and they only seem to work on weekends and then the elders are also bumbling around so it is hit or miss even then.

on this latest visit, we had ordered drinks at the table and waited and waited for the waiter to come take our order. it was only after waving my arms furiously that he remembered that we were there and he came and took our order long after the drinks were finished. he never offered to refresh the drinks but i did order a bottle of wine from the very limited wine list that was promptly served. the waiter poured it into a filthy wine glass for me to taste, and i told him so. rather than to apologize and get a new glass, he held it up to the light and squinted at it as though i was lying to him. after i assured him that i am not a liar, he went and got another wine glass that was filled with streaks and towel lint, but at least it did not have dark specks of filth like the prior glass. he then waved a quarter-filled bottle of sparkling water and asked if i wanted another bottle. i told him yes, after we finish the one he had in his hand. he then walked away with the partially-filled bottle to get another!

the wine bottle sat empty shortly after the appetizers were delivered; the servers never knew this because they never served anything except the first glass. i had hoped to be able to get another bottle delivered intimefor the steaks, but they had servers delivering the food and once again, the waiter was nowhere to be found. finally, 30 minutes after the wine bottle was empty, i saw him across the room i waived him down and motioned that we need another bottle. fifteen minutes later a gentleman came by to ask how things were, and i complained that we were still waiting on a bottle of wine and that my steak was nearly finished. my steak was finished off by thetimethe waiter came bumbling up with an arm full of wine bottles telling me that they did not have my wine, but that i could have any one of the lesser wines that he had in his arms for the same price as the one i ordered.

by thistimei asked for the manager and the gentleman that i had complained to approached the table wearing a nametag that said "supervisor" and started speaking spanish to me rather than the english that we had previously conversed in. since i don't speak spanish, i asked him to speak english. he apologized for the poor wait service and comp'd the dessert that no one was in the mood to eat. during dessert i noted the supervisor laughing and joking with his elderly waiters, although i don't think it was about us, it seemed to be inappropriate to fraternize with waiters that should have been fired long ago. on the way out of the restaurant, some of the waiters partially blocked the doorway as they smoked their cigarettes.

on a side note, besides having a very limited wine list and no one that is even close to being a sommelier, they charge fourtimethe retail price for wines. this would fly in a nice restaurant in a large city, but seems excessive for a place with very poor quality service in a town like el paso.

btw, the birthday cake was never served.

shannonj. my wife decided that we needed to try a 2ndtimesince the first was a disaster. this time, i spoke with the greeter at the door and told her that we had a badtimeon our first try but would give it another try. the waiter, juan did an excellent job of service. we ordered a ribeye cooked medium rare which was delivered with great vegetables. my wife is from argentina and i have been there so the wine i selected was a good malbec to go with the steak. everything was as ordered. two negatives were that the food is not authentic argentinean in any manner and although the food and service was excellent, it was overpriced. juan our waiter rated a 10. i will have to try it again as now i have reported a good and a bad review to make sure this was not a fluke.

westside resident. the decor and ambiance are very good. some of the food ordered was ok but the ribeye steak i ordered was tough. the spinach empanadas were very good. the service was not anywhere near the standard it should be for this quality of restaurant. i was excited about going and trying the food as my spouse and most of our friend with us are from argentina and we were about 20 in all. everyone we asked were disappointed in the experience. the server brought the wine but had no idea as to how to serve it. orders were confused, some wrong, some never got there. maybe in a few months with some training of the staff the place might turn out to be a good to excellent establishment.

absolutely delicious. tonight was my firsttimevisiting garufa. i must say i was quite impressed. theres few places in el paso with such a unique atmosphere and amazing food, not to mention the service, which was impeccable. before i continue, i must say that i have to try this place again to make sure it wasn't just a fluke, because it really was fantastic service.

we, ordered a couple of empanadas before our main course. i can't recall the name, but one of them was stuffed with corn, pecans, bacon and cheese. this was the best of them. the others were a mix of queso fresco, egg, and spinach i believe. all delicious but the first i would highly recommend. as a main dish i ordered the new york strip medium rare, which arrived with a side of caramelized onions and chiles toreados. the steak was cooked perfectly. my waiter suggested an argentinian cabernet which was a great compliment to the flavor of the steak. my date ordered the fettucini with mushrooms. this was very good, but my only complaint of this would be the sauce, which had a very strong taste of wine, as if it wasnt allowed enoughtimeover the heat after mixing. still, quite good. our dinner was finished with a slice of chocolate cake. it was layered with what appeared to be a chocolate ganache. needless to say, a perfect dessert to end a wonderful culinary experience. two thumbs up.

bad experience. last 3/25/11 me, my wife and kids went to the restaurant, she got in to see if they have high chair for the kids. after 5 minutes waiting at waiting area and around 5 employees loking at her, nobody came to help her. maybe she was under dress????? we left, just wants to say that my money worth same as the rich people and my credit cards has never been declined like many rich people from south of the border. probably you los over $100 because i like to eat. first and lasttimevisit after reading all reviews, also a argentinian friend of mine told me that is mexican style argentinian food.

no es de argentina. first, i'm argentine and this restaurant is far from authentic. it's a slap in the face to my country. the staff is mexican and white and they shunned my family and were only paying attention to older white people who were ordering drinks. they asked if we wanted drinks and when we said no, they didn't offer us soft drinks, coffee, tea or anything. they brought us tap water.
when we finally got our food, it was cold as if the cook had sat it on the shelf and the waiter took histimeto bring it to us.
we sat there for about an hour and a half, and thirty minutes was just waiting for the check alone. terrible, terrible, terrible place.

great food, still a work in progess. when we got to the restaurant we were told there was a 45 minute wait. i was hungry so we sat at the bar and ordered there. the bartender was great, i think her name was jessica, she was attentive and was always smiling. the food like lasttimewas great, but thistimei would say it tasted even better. the restaurant was packed but even at the bar i felt like i was in a special place. i really enjoyed the place once again. good job guys, keep it up.

lomo hambriento!. steak was tender, was big enough for two and it was cooked to perfection. the downside was the sides are extra, but i was worth every penny!

-----30 sep, 2010-----

a truly great experience. i have to say that after dinning in garufa juarez, chihuahua, and aguascalientes, this is the best yet. the hostess was courteous and smiling, the bartenders where friendly, the food was great once we sat at the table. i do admit the service wasn't that good, with the waiter abandoning us for long periods of time. but the food was excellent. only complaint? its way more expensive than its mexico counterparts, but well worth it.

horrible horrible horrible how do i count the horribles. i decided to give garufa's another try as my first experience was just ok. so thistimei came in and ordered the ribeye medium rare. came out medium to midwell. i guess the server didnt think i was a good tipper because he didnt give a crap about anything our table needed. there is no way that this restaurant is selling anything of quality except the empanadas are pretty good. i couldnt beleive how tough and over cooked my steak was. i let the server know about the steak and he told me that it was cooked midrare. didnt even offer to fix the situation after i had let him know it was overcooked. the best thing this restaurant has going for themselves is the decor. if i had known the service was going to be bad and my steak overcooked i would have stayed home and ate ramen noodles. nexttimemabe ill just come in for a beer at the bar, but to whoever thinks this place is good, seriously prolly has never had a decent dish in their life. should have listened to my instincts and had gone to stateline for a steak or next door at mi piaci. least i know i would be paying for quality and not some some crap i wouldnt even make burritos out of. absolutly the worst. hopefully the next restaurant from mexico will include a chef and not the head one from mcdonalds.

savable failure. where to begin? for a place that specializes in meats they failed to adhere by the cardinal rule of steakhouses, don't overcook the meat!!! don't get me wrong, the steaks were well seasoned and tasted good but when i order a ribeye rare, i expect it rare not medium!! we were a table of four and our meats were not cooked like we ordered; big mistake for a steakhouse. the highlight of our meal were the empanadas which were very good. another thing that bothered me were the sweetbreads that i ordered. they fried the **** out of them and they came with tortillas!! no not like a spanish tortilla (variation of this is found in argentinean cuisine) but mexican corn tortillas!! these were by far the worst sweetbreads i have ever tasted and how can an argentinean restaurant serve tortillas? i'll wait a couple of months before i try this place again.

addendum: decided to give it another try and they actually cooked my steak like i ordered and i enjoyed it very much; same as for the people i was with. i still think their empanadas are very good and the service was also better this time. overall it was a good experience but i need to eat here one moretimeto certify that this was not a fluke. btw, not authentic argentinean.
