key west
january 29, 2018 · by willoughbyandy · in burgers, florida, latin american, southeast · leave a comment. on our day of food in key west, we shopped and ate our way down duval street.   we had our first lunch, of a wonderful lobster roll at djs clam shack, and about two hours later we had arrived for second lunch.   garbo’s grill is another diners, drive-ins and dives find, housed in a foodtruckbehind a bar.

i have absolutely no idea what the hype is all about. sorry but i don't get it. this place is not 1 out of however many restaurants there are in key west. it may not even the best street food that you can find on the island but it somehow makes it to the top of the list for reasons that i just cannot fathom.

basically this place is a foodtruckwith a few tables and chairs in a yard. when we went there, we saw 3 people within the "truck" - one taking orders and then two preparing the food. the menu was incredibly simple with only a few items on it. as we do not consume beef, i believe there were only two or three items that we could have ordered from and those were either tacos or burritos. (the same dish could be served as two tacos or as a larger burrito.) that being the case, between my wife and i, we ordered a fish burrito and shrimp taco. oddly enough for a food truck, we were told that there would be a wait time of at least 30-35 minutes before we got our food.

we decided to wait in a bar adjoining the foodtruckand ordered a drink each for ourselves. it was after we were done with our drinks and 35 - 40 minutes from the time we had ordered that we got our food. all of the wait and the spartan environment would have been worth it if the food had blown our mind but that wasn't the case. in fact, quite far from it. both the burrito and the tacos came in flour tortillas that had not been grilled at all and they tasted exactly like flour tortillas taken out of a packet might taste like. the filling itself was very average and as we had our lunch, we were left scratching our heads as to why this place was as hyped up as it had been. also worth noting is that though the cashier had said that the burritos were just a slightly bigger version of the tacos, they turned out to be a lot bigger and had we known that, we would have ordered two burritos rather than 1 burrito and 1 taco.

other than food, service is something also one pays attention to and there was little service offered given that it's a glorified food truck. what is inexcusable though is that the people at thetruckseemed rude. the reason i say this is because when somebody later on in the line asked if it would take him less than 40 minutes to get his food if he ordered in larger quantities (for his friends), the girl behind the counter (and i think one of the owners) replied curtly - "there are just the two of us preparing food and we won't be growing an extra pair of hands if you order more". i suppose the folks realize that with their excellent ratings (entirely undeserved in my opinion) they can afford to be rude and they will still have customers lining up outside of theirtruckand it is up to you to tell them that's not quite the case.

having my lunch at this place was a good wake-up call for us to not just pay attention to how many stars a place has on yelp or ta but to get a good sense of what we are getting ourselves into. i would definitely suggest that you avoid this place and prove that bad service with mediocre food doesn't quite cut it in key west.
