the atmosphere in gadsby's tavern is what you'd expect for such a place - the look and feel of a place that had just seen the likes of george washington. chalky paints, windsor chairs, pewter chargers, and staff in almost-period dress do convey the feeling of the late 1700s. it is the food, however, that makes gadsby's memorable.
several items on the lunch menu were done by somebody who knows how to cook and were very reasonably priced. the peanutsoupwas excellent, as was the cheese-covered onion soup. the fish and chips featured two hand-battered pieces of cod with fries made from very flavorful potatoes. their take on a french dip sandwich included tender beef and brie on a roll with an onion-laced au jus.
on top of everything, the service was excellent. if lunch was this good, i cannot wait to return for dinner.
