outstanding. grade: a-/b+

the atmosphere in gadsby's tavern is what you'd expect for such a place - the look and feel of a place that had just seen the likes of george washington. chalky paints, windsor chairs, pewter chargers, and staff in almost-period dress do convey the feeling of the late 1700s. it is the food, however, that makes gadsby's memorable.
several items on the lunch menu were done by somebody who knows how to cook and were very reasonably priced. the peanut soup was excellent, as was the cheese-covered onion soup. the fish and chips featured two hand-battered pieces of cod with fries made from very flavorful potatoes. their take on a french dip sandwich included tender beef and brie on a roll with an onion-laced au jus.
on top of everything, the service was excellent. if lunch was this good, i cannot wait to return for dinner.

history with awesome food. do the quick tour of gadsbystavern and hotel first to set the stage for your meal.
kid friendly and the best cheese burgers of the trip. we did lunch and enjoyed washingtons recipe for a porter as well as crab cakes. reasonably priced and enjoyable. one of washingtons favorite hangouts! other dignitaries too ... lots of history of alexandrea connected to here!

friendly service and a nice selection of entries for sunday brunch. the peanut soup was really rich and creamy with a handful of roasted peanuts sprinkled on top, a meal by itself.

my wife and i were looking forward to a lunch at this landmark. upon arriving at 1, we waited in an empty entry way for our seating. after 5 min we stepped around the corner and had to search for someone to seat us. we were seated and after 10 min of waiting we decided to leave. hopefully this was an off time for them and not the normal level of service.

very nice historic atmosphere, that just makes the food taste better.. i've been to gadsby's twice about 10 months ago. a friend of mine who was in the area was introduced to this place and then he, in turn, introduced me to it. the setting is very historic, as apparently george washington had a birthday and gave a farewell speech to the army from its location.

the inside has been modernized a bit (of course) but the layout is very inviting in a 1780's type of way. the tables and chairs are close and sometimes uncomfortable, but the servers in their period-dress take away from that fact. the tablewear has an old feeling to it as well.

the last night i was there with my family, they had a period-reenactor who dresses and acts like ben franklin walk around from table to table. he's pretty cool to talk to.

anyway, the food is generally really tasty. the menu is expensive (be prepared for upwards of $25 a plate for something good) but i got the gentleman's pye (really just a shepards pie) my first visit and the george washingtons favorite meal my second time. the gentleman's pye comes with a hearty stew with mashed potatoes underneath a thin and cripsy shell placed on top of the bowl. george washington's favorite meal (not sure of the name) comes with duck, which is quite outstanding and not at all slimy, like duck meat usually is.

my only problems with this restaurant is that their beer selection is lacking. come on! our forefathers were known alcoholics and it's time we ate and drank like they did! if you're not going to have some sort of period-style ale available (even if it was warm!) then at least have something similar on tap. but bottles of regular suds won't do it for me.

other than that, i highly recommend this place!

ever since moving to dc over five years ago, i have been looking for an excuse to try gadsby's tavern , the quirky old town alexandria landmark established in the 1770s, and famous for purportedly serving george washington. when i heard about a benefit dinner that showcased yard's beer paired with four courses for $85 a person, i thought i had found the perfect opportunity to sample this institution and enjoy a night of good food and great beer. wrong! and here is why: the night, which began in the adjacen
