06/04/2017 - we decided to stop and grab a bite to eat as the traffic in randburg was hectic and i didn't particularly feel like making supper after spending 2 hours in traffic. the service at fusionista was absolutely fantastic. our waiter was friendly and on the ball. we had been seated and had our drinks brought to us within minutes. themenuis massive as they specialise in a variety of asian cuisines, which makes it quite difficult deciding what to order.. without skipping a beat our waiter told us about the specials and one of them was the sushi doughnut. i'd seen this on facebook & knew i had to try it.
i must add that i'm not an adventurous eater or a big fan of sushi but the idea of trying an overseas trend got the better of me and i ordered it. it looked so pretty and colourful & i dove right it (not before taking a few allergex to counteract my seafood allergy) it wasn't bad.. but it wasn't that great either, it was a bit bland and hard to chew.however i might not be the best judge as i said i don't particularly like raw fish.for mains we ordered the angry duck & the chicken pad thai (without the shrimp) which was absolutely delicious. overall the restaurant was neat, warm and inviting. i will definitely be back.

fusionista is as unique on the inside as it appears from the outside. from its ultraviolet-lit fish tanks to its astro-turf carpeting and fake bamboo partitionings, the place is kitsch central. i have driven past many times, and finally found an occasion to visit, and with its high rating i thought my partner and i were in for a treat.

unfortunately not. themenuis so comprehensive, it lands up being an exhausting read. as a starter my partner had some steamed pork dumplings. the pastry was a good texture, and served beautifully in a two-tier bamboo steamer, with lemon grass shoots at the bottom which filled the room with a gorgeous aroma. the filling was a bit on the dry side, but we decided to overlook it. the tastiest element of the dish was the sweet, sour and herby dipping sauce. i had a "sushi donut" to start; the rice was well cooked and the toppings were fresh, but other than that unremarkable. again, the dipping sauces were the most exciting aspect of my starter. we ordered 2 main courses: the sizzling duck and the thai lemon grass and coconut ramen soup. the portions were generous. the "sizzling" duck was served on a silver platter heated by tealight candles. perhaps i expect too much, but i would have appreciated the authenticity that comes with a thick cast-iron plate. the skin of the duck was crispy, but the flesh dry and flavourless. the sauce was essentially just oyster sauce and button mushrooms, really nothing exciting or authentic. also, at almost r200 a dish, i expect rice to be served with it, but we had to order and pay for that separately. the soup was tasty for the first few mouthfuls and the noodles well cooked. the broth was overly sweet, lacking balance and the moreish heat that i expect from thai soups.

the service was friendly and quick.

i wanted to suppress my disappointment with the fact that we went out on a monday night, but the restaurant prices itself to be competitive with some of the more high-end asian restaurants in johannesburg and i therefore expect it to be on the same kind of level, regardless of which day of the week it is. while the food was not outright terrible, it lacks the refinement required to justify its price. the underlying "fusion" theme is either very difficult to find in themenuitems or it is as off the wall as the decor (see the divider dedicated to asian pizza).

i unfortunately won't be back.

on my birthday after our spa treatment at fusionista spa we were treated to free meals from a selected menu. has a private dining area with a fish tank right at one of the tables. the outside area is enclosed with trees and beautiful. if you sitting outside and cold you can make use of the poncho or have the heater on. there are loads to choose from the menu, also have a totally separatemenujust for vegetarians. cocktails looked really lekker.

free wi-fi

the food was good and the service was great. i was treated to free dessert and a gift which was a surprise.

thanks fusionista for a memorable birthday dinner, will definitely be back.

the global search for extraordinary asian fusion cuisine ends in joburg!

my love affair with asian food began almost 40 years ago. in my home town of toronto, canada, we are blessed with an abundance of amazing asian restaurants from many nationalities and i have asian food almost every day. my business trips in the past few decades have taken me on many occasions to china, hong kong, singapore, thailand, taiwan, japan, philippines, and i have eaten everything from street food to the top restaurants in these countries.

against that backdrop, what a joy it was to dine at fusionista last night. finally, an asian fusion restaurant that has it all! a thoughtfully curatedmenuthat brings together a marvelous blend of the best each country has to offer, with a creative twist, all executed to perfection. fusionista should receive global recognition for what these guys have created. awesome service too!

this is my new favourite restaurant!! it's not just a restaurant, it's an experience not to be missed.
the atmosphere and decor has that wow factor and i was immediately transported to another world.
our group ordered the setmenufor two, which was made from the freshest ingredients, and presented with meticulous attention to detail by a very friendly waiter.
themenuis vast, with each dish looking more and more inviting. the sauces were unbelievable and we kept them aside after each course just to try and figure out what was in them.
i can only praise the owners for creating a truly special place where diners who are bored with other restaurants can escape.
worth every cent and more!!

walking into fusionista on friday night was like walking into another world.. literally. i felt like i was taking a journey into east asia and found it incredibly difficult to remind myself that i was in fact in randburg.

david smith and his team absolutely stunned me on friday night with their hospitality, service and sheer variety of cuisines on offer.. certainly some of the most unusual food that i have had the opportunity to eat in quite some time.

onto their comprehensive and variedmenushowcasing everything from cambodia, vietnam, laos, japan, china, malaysia, thailand, singapore and last but not least the philippines as what can only be shortened into 'eastern cuisine' as a genre.

this is a restaurant that specialises in uniqueness and almost everything can be tailor-made to suite your specific needs or tastes, which i like. for example, for gluten-intolerant there is cauliflower rice. for vegetarians, almost every dish on themenucan be made strictly vegetarian.

we ordered and settled in with our glass of wine, only to be told that whilst you wait for your food you can actually have a full head, neck and back massage at the table.. bliss after a long and stressful week at the office.

to start i selected the:
laotian prawn cakes with coriander, lime, ginger and peppers served with a mild orange zest dipping sauce. this starter was a little dry and my least favourite of the starters.
tuna & salmon sashimi salad with avocado, wasabi, ginger, japanese mayonnaise and honey on a bed of butter lettuce and sushi rice. i found the honey a little too sweet for me but the rest of this salad was pure heaven (and healthy to boot). this dish is served with an additional ponzu sauce, string beetroot & cucumber topping.
and last but not least:
chinese fusion dim sum in prawn, chicken, beef & vegetable. steamed and served with a sweet & sour herb sauce.

from there it was onto a combination of two dishes from the japanese range for mains:
salmon teriyaki, lightly seared salmon fillet glazed with teriyaki sauce served with pickles, a rice slaw made with spring onion, carrot, cucumber & japanese mayonnaise. what a perfect dish!!
andfusionista specialty unique platter for one comprised of pickled herring square nigiri (ma guru), caviar creations cocktail tomatoes, sashimi skewers served with granadilla jus, fusionista rainbow rolls (in berry flavour).. i absolutely loved the caviar creations and sashimi skewers!!

you have to love the unexpected. this was fusionista for me. it has a huge extensivemenuof eastern cuisine. from cambodia, vietnam, thailand, japenese to chinese and dare i say etc.
the cambodian beef curry is lingering on my tongue. what a taste experience!
they have a very extensive cocktailmenutoo. try the 'darth vader' cocktail, which is all black. only for the brave. consisting of black vodka & black
sambuca (only a part of the ingredients), this is a must for liquorice lovers.
let me know your experience @ fusionista. thismenuis too extensive to try all once!
