walking intofusionistaon friday night was like walking into another world.. literally. i felt like i was taking a journey into east asia and found it incredibly difficult to remind myself that i was in fact in randburg.
david smith and his team absolutely stunned me on friday night with their hospitality, service and sheer variety of cuisines on offer.. certainly some of the most unusual food that i have had the opportunity to eat in quite some time.
onto their comprehensive and varied menu showcasing everything from cambodia, vietnam, laos, japan, china, malaysia, thailand, singapore and last but not least the philippines as what can only be shortened into 'eastern cuisine' as a genre.
this is a restaurant that specialises in uniqueness and almost everything can be tailor-made to suite your specific needs or tastes, which i like. for example, for gluten-intolerant there is cauliflower rice. for vegetarians, almost every dish on the menu can be made strictly vegetarian.
we ordered and settled in with our glass of wine, only to be told that whilst you wait for your food you can actually have a full head, neck and back massage at the table.. bliss after a long and stressful week at the office.
to start i selected the:
laotian prawn cakes with coriander, lime, ginger and peppers served with a mild orange zest dipping sauce. this starter was a little dry and my least favourite of the starters.
tuna & salmon sashimi salad with avocado, wasabi, ginger, japanese mayonnaise and honey on a bed of butter lettuce and sushi rice. i found the honey a little too sweet for me but the rest of this salad was pure heaven (and healthy to boot). this dish is served with an additional ponzu sauce, string beetroot & cucumber topping.
and last but not least:
chinese fusion dim sum in prawn, chicken, beef & vegetable. steamed and served with a sweet & sour herb sauce.
from there it was onto a combination of two dishes from the japanese range for mains:
salmon teriyaki, lightly seared salmon fillet glazed with teriyaki sauce served with pickles, a rice slaw made with spring onion, carrot, cucumber & japanese mayonnaise. what a perfect dish!!
andfusionista specialty unique platter for one comprised of pickled herring square nigiri (ma guru), caviar creations cocktail tomatoes, sashimi skewers served with granadilla jus, fusionistarainbow rolls (in berry flavour).. i absolutely loved the caviar creations and sashimi skewers!!
