i really wanted to stop in frenchbroadchocolate lounge while we were in asheville but it was proving difficult to find a time when we were hungry enough for a chocolaty treat. we finally went one night after dinner, not because we were especially hungry, but because it was our last chance and because the dessert choices at dinner hadn't excited me.

so, we figured out why the lines snaked out the door and down the street in front of frenchbroadchocolate lounge. the desserts are world class, pure and simple. the key lime cheesecake with the ginger crust was scrumptious, i had never experienced the taste explosion that i had with the costa rican chocolate ice cream, and the truffles were sinfully wonderful. i don't know how anyone could show any restraint at frenchbroadchocolate lounge with all the tasty and delectable desserts they have to offer. we were scared to go back in the mornings for coffee and espresso because we knew we'd go overboard on the desserts. our visit there was truly one of the highlights of our trip to asheville.

best chocolate experience i've ever had!. this place provided one of the very best chocolate experiences i've ever had in my entire life. chocolate is my number one. i'm pretty happy to eat it in any form, but cream based desserts are my favorites - ice cream, cheesecake, mousse, pudding. my husband and i went to frenchbroadlast night and shared four items. only one of them was a disappointment and i want to cover it first to get it out of the way. their ice cream is just not for me - it has more of an icy texture than a creamy one and it also lacks the punch of flavor that i have come to expect. so the salted caramel and chocolate milkshake simply didn't do it for me.

however, everything else was fantastic! the chocolate creme brulee was smooth and creamy with the perfect sugar crust. i was absolutely smitten with the layered pudding/mousse of chocolate and caramel. but the liquid truffle was my favorite - mostly because it's so unique! where else can you get this?!? these liquid truffles are served in a tiny espresso-sized cup. they have the flavor and thick of consistency of melted chocolate, which is basically all i want out of life. we tried the salted caramel and fell in love. i would absolutely buy one for every visit.

on my way out, i stopped next door at chocolate and milk to gawk at their chocolate library and to pick up some treats for the road. i also treated myself to one of their fantastic truffles - some deliciously rich peanut butter and chocolate thing.

this place had many other treats that look very tempting. next time i would consider the chocolate mousse, the coconut macaroon brownie or the chocolate tart. so many choices!

frenchbroadis on the main square in downtown asheville. the room is full of large windows that give it an extremely sunny feel, even on a rainy day. it's also a big room, with enough space not only for a lot of tables but also what seems to be a combination coffee/wine bar. as you can see from their cases, they cover the waterfront of chocolate: chocolate candies, baked goods, and puddings. they don't seem to be open for breakfast, which is a shame. chocolate for breakfast is one of life's wonderful little treats. this is their chocolate chunk mint brownie. as the name implies, it has some nice little chunks of chocolate as well as mint. it was a truly great brownie. the texture was just right, in my view: firm and shape-holding but very moist. the amount of mint was just right; the mint gives a nice buzz during and after the chew but it never overpowers the chocolate.

the  frenchbroadchocolate lounge is known for (you guessed it) its chocolate! yes, their delicious truffles have been making news for years, and it’s no wonder given the amazing care and ingredients that go into these chocolates from seed to table. while the line may often wind out the door and down the street, it’s worth the wait for the patient chocolate lover. not only do they have a vast array of delightful and creative truffles (just a few of which are pictured in this post, and a healthy ratio of which are seasonal treats), but they also have a surprising variety of drinking chocolates. two of my favorites: the cold sipping chocolate, which is served in a wine glass and is elegantly refreshing (see photo below); and the indian kulfi hot chocolate, which is amazing (and too incredible to actually put into words). if you’re visiting asheville, you really should stop in and treat yourself to some world-class chocolates.

walking into frenchbroadchocolate lounge was like happening upon heaven. i would have been able to just walk past if it hadn't been for an exiting patron opening the door as i approached. i took in the warm scent of the room, my eyelids sagged, and i called ahead to my son. i gasped, "we're stopping here for dessert." this was such a delightful end to a really busy day.

for dessert, we decided to walk up the street to frenchbroadchocolates, a very well-known local chocolate spot. we had a slice of apple-caramel cake, with one of the best, lightest buttercream frostings i’ve had. along with that was a piping-hot cup of opulent sipping chocolate. not hot chocolate like you’d make at home, but more along the lines of a melted chocolate bar (they actually c

je t'aime frenchbroadchocolate lounge. really i have only been there once and it was just splendid. i battle daily with the urge just to hop on the interstate and take my behind on a 2 hour journey just so i can taste that maple butter cake again.

great atmosphere and great desserts!

frenchbroadchocolate lounge is located on asheville's lexington avenue. it gives you a vibe of a relaxed coffee shop, except everything is chocolate oriented. there are 2 cases beside the register one with chocolate truffles, which you can purchase as singles or by half dozens and dozens. the other has an assortment of cakes, cookies, parfaits and creme brulees (vanilla and chocolate). the drink menu offers a little bit of everything from hot chocolate, to liquid chocolate truffles, coffee, tea and shakes. they do ship orders if you cannot make it in but would like to try this fantasticness.

hipster chocolate. frenchbroadchocolate lounge has good chocolate, but it comes at a cost: pretentiousness and condescension.

i ordered the xocolatl, which is touted as a traditional aztec beverage that is bitter and spicy. upon ordering, i was reminded that it was spicy, as though i could not have fully understood the labored description available on the menu. i assured the gentleman waiting on me that i could handle the heat. when it arrived, i was expecting a spicy drinking chocolate; however, it was not spicy at all. when i went back to get some cayenne added to it, the same gentleman practically clutched his proverbial pearls at my claim that the drink lacked any kind of heat. it was as though no one ever deigned to question the composition of the beverage. so, strike one against frenchbroadchocolate lounge.

the next day, i ordered a double short non-fat latte, which would imply to anyone who makes coffee that i don't want foam, i don't want a lot of milk, and i don't want fat. the woman taking my order in no way questioned any part of my order. it was served in a cappuccino mug with a lot of milk. (they got the no foam part right). when i questioned the serving vessel, i was told "no. you're confused." i found this to be incredibly off-putting and arrogant. the more appropriate response, i think, would have been, "well, that's how *we* server our lattes. but we can certainly remake the drink according to your expectations." compounding this transgression, i discovered later they don't even have skim milk, which seems like a major oversight. for folks who are on a low-fat or non-fat diet, being served full fat milk is akin to serving someone a food to which they are allergic.

my final complaint against this establishment has more to do with the bathrooms. they have two unisex bathrooms, which doesn't greatly offend me. what does offend me is the presence of a urinal, which is in addition to the toilet. i understand that for men this does not seem like an etiquette breach, but for a lot of women it is. and this would not bother me near as much if there were only one restroom: they have 2 unisex bathrooms. my thinking is, if you're going to the trouble of having two bathrooms, why not go ahead and differentiate by sex and leave the urinal out of the ladie's room. secondly, the hot water was turned off in the bathroom, which meant you had to wash your hands with cold water. i've been to dive punk bars that keep the hot water on in the bathrooms. it just doesn't make sense to me.

the word chocolate is in the name, need i say more? if you live in asheville, or are visiting asheville, this is a must place to stop. located around the corner from a bunch of other restaurants, frenchbroadchocolate is easy to miss, unless you are looking for it. inside, the scent of chocolate is a feast for the senses, along with the chocolate, chocolate desserts, and other sweet concoctions that fill the the display cases. there is constantly a line, but it thankfully moves quickly. place your order and they will give you a card to take to your table so they know where to bring your order. while the place is small and intimate, there are plenty of comfy spots to sit. they serve wine and beer, along with coffee drinks and others, but a glass of wine was in order. we had to try the liquid truffles, which is a ganache-based, hot sipping chocolate. there are several flavors of this and we decided to try the pure dark. this is very rich and decadent and a little goes along way. along w

this cozy place combines our two favorite loves - coffee and chocolate. nestled in downtown asheville, frenchbroadchocolate lounge is an unassuming place that does not have a haughty arrogance but rather it a nice, relaxing place to indulge in some afternoon delight. the display case yields choices beyond compare and the ramifications of such choices are as far removed from the diner as the caloric consequences. we opted for the nibby brownie and melanie had a peppermint mocha while i had my usual cappuccino. one thing we noticed that simply captivated us while we relaxed and enjoyed our time there was that the term "eccentric" is redefined here. i don't mean weird but in a r.e.m. or b-52s kind of way. it's both disturbing and delightfully welcoming and is the kind of place where you can just be yourself. we both enjoyed the brownie but had mixed opinions on the coffee. melanie felt it was bitter and far too strong. i thought that it was very stout but i really like strong coffee! wh
