flourdrumnewtown is a chic cafe serving all day breakfast, brunch, lunch and those late pick me up afternoon delights. it has an outside seating area and the cosy vibe continues throughout the front and back dining areas with a rustic charm and a relaxed atmosphere. some walls are dedicated as an exhibition area for local artists and all artwork is available for purchase. but wait till you see the 12 metre stunning mural in the main dining area, it’s quite a statement!

the genuinely lovely staff made our lunch visit special, we kicked off with two equally good coffees, a flat white and long black.

my taste buds were tingling with excitement when my grilled chicken tenderloin burger arrive. fused with indian spices, topped with avocado, iceberg lettuce, spring onion, dripping chipotle mayo and beautifully presented between two soft and fluffy buns. the chips that came with the dish are crisp and golden on the outside, soft and fluffy on the inside. if you are into a bold and juicy chicken burger and best chips, this is for you.

my mate's order was the house-made pappardelle pasta with an 8-hour slow braised lamb shank ragu. as we always do, we share whatever we order so we can compare notes. the marriage of the flat pasta and lamb shank ragu is a knock out, it’s lush, silky and packed full of flavour, the chilli infused olive oil added zing to the palate. for serious pasta lovers, this one is with a high note.

dining at flourdrumis not complete without trying one of their to die for cakes, yes, just check out their cake display stand!

so next time when you find yourself shopping or wondering around king st. newtown, just look for the the sign, ‘flourdrumnewtown’ and check out this stylish cafe and treat yourself for a hearty meal or coffee and cake.

i recently had the most epic dinner at flourdrumin newtown. i went with some girlfriends and we were spoilt rotten by the 3 amazing owners. they kicked off the night with some bubbly and then brought out a feast. 8 dishes, 5 girls and we devoured it all. we had the following dishes from the grilled menu:

🍄mushroom medley with hazelnut & beetroot hummus dukha 🍄 this was amazing thanks to that hummus, oh my god the most intense flavours and perfect amount of spice!
🍢spiced lamb & beef kofta with tahini lime and sesame 🍢 the kofta were so big and packed full of flavour!
🦑hot & spicy baby squid 🦑 i didn’t actually try these as i’m not a squid fan however everyone said it was delicious and i did try the sauce and it was divine!
🍢charred chicken tikka with lime & mint 🍢 as an indian i love my tikka and these certainly did not disappoint. they were much lighter than a regular tikka but packed with flavour.

then we had the following dishes from the mains: . .

🥓chargrilled pork belly with poached sugar plums & seasonal greens 🥓 so we ate the whole dish thinking the sugar plums were rhubarbs and becoming obsessed with them to now realise they are sugar plums! but man, they were delicious!! what flavour and a unique addition to pork belly!

🍣grilled atlantic salmon with seasonal greens 🍣 the most perfect piece of salmon to exist. this restaurant seriously knocks it out of the park with their salmon!!

🥔 gnocchi with borlotti beans, kale, capers and fresh herbs. 🥔 this was one of the best plates of gnocchi i have ever had! also no clue how such a deliciously creamy dish is vegan but i’m impressed .

🍝 pappardelle lamb ragu 🍝 so i basically came for this dish because i had seen so many photo’s and heard great things and it completely met my high expectations! such a meaty, comforting plate of pasta
flourdrumhas managed to exceed even my highest of expectations and amaze me with their flavours, presentation and beyond everything their love. the three owners have so much passion and devotion that is reflected throughout the restaurant. they are humble & genuine and it is by far my favourite restaurant in sydney. thank you for the greatest night flourdrum💜

i’ve wanted to eat at flourdrumfor some time, but had avoided it in view of the terrifying parking situation in newtown. i was finally able to bundle up the spoons to brave the king st parking situation this weekend, only to find that parking isn’t so bad on a sunday morning. we had a dish from their regular menu, and a dish from their spring inspired menu. allow me to discuss.

flourdrumhas got to be one of my favourite brunch places in sydney. i love the buttermilk banofee pancakes, a favourite here! the pancakes are soft and fluffy, goes well with the glazed banana, and love the other toppings including the hard toffee, the meringue and the cookie crumbs.
also had the mushroom medley and it was flavourful and not bland at all. added bacon to it and it was super crispy!
another favourite is the cookie, but for $8 i wouldn’t say it’s the best but hey it’s great for photos!

i have been searching for a calm outdoor area where i could grab a good meal and drink while studying. flourdrumhas surpassed all expectations as just that kind of place. in terms of food their banoffee pancakes where fluffy and smothered in all sorts of toppings and extras creating a whimsical creation straight from a c.s. lewis novel. additionally the banana chai smoothie is a great contrast to the heavy sweetness of the pancakes with a nice mix of spices to calm anyone down.
from the atmosphere, to the friendly staff, to the rabbit and cat jumping between seats flourdrumhas without a doubt become a place i will visit regularly.

flourdrumquickly became one of my favourite venues in sydney, and it's due to their focus on not just great food, but providing everything from a beautiful venue inside and it, friendly attentive staff, superb coffee and an abundance of baked goods! their breakfast/brunch menu has some of the usual things you'd expect to find, but it's their creativity and ability to create such a great balance of flavours in all the dishes they do wether it's fritters or the duck wontons! not to mention these guys also to dinner and stick to what they are great at; grills, pasta, dessert and wine! there are enough outstanding reviews here to that you'll be in for an enjoyable experience, highly recommended!

fusion applications, sophisticated toast and wraps, healthy gluten free and vegan breakfast choices and bolder flavors are just some of the things that have secured south newtown’s flourdrumas a local inner west favorite.  the chain has always been around this establishment with several of the team involved in sports in the local area and the nearby performing arts spaces.

situated in the worldly king street newtown, flourdrumbrings it all. whimsical, unique, kid friendly and above all delicious. the place itself is split into three sections and their courtyard transports you to the whimsical lands of the likes of alice in wonderland. i love the fact that resident bunny big daddy makes multiple appearances through brunch and so too the lively fight-fish, goldfish and budgies. as if that wasn’t enough, the food and drinks were exceptional. the banoffee buttermilk pancakes were a clear winner for the kids and i! can’t wait to be back again 😍😍😍😋😋😋😋🥞🥞🥞🥞🥞

close to the st peters end of king street in newtown, flourdrumis home to the giant cookies and is a truly magical place to enjoy a wholesome meal or just coffee and sweets with a friend.

always greeted with a genuine smile its impossible not to be happy and feel the good vibes as soon as you walk in. the first section of the cafe is all coffee and cakes! their talented creative mind the moonlight baker is always dreaming up delicious
sweet treats for their front displays. there is ample seating in the main dining area for big groups and events, then further back is a beautiful outside area filled to the brim with plants, flowers and all sorts of surprises.

if you’re a pancakes for breakfast kinda person you simply cannot pass up their fluffy banoffee buttermilk pancakes! loaded with caramelised banana, dulce de leche, mascarpone whipped cream, anzac biscuits crumble and a toffee topper, we would go as far as saying these were the best pancakes we have had in sydney in a very long time!

if you’re a savoury fan the kweichow moutai prince house cured salmon with poached eggs is a fresh alternative to a salmon benedict. topped with flying fish roe, potato hash browns and a fresh herb and pickled fennel salad this is a perfectly healthy gf option.

we also loved the open faced omelette with zucchini ribbons, edamame, red veined sorrel and radish, and has to try their perfectly curated chia pot with coconut water, strawberry jelly, cherry compote, lemon scented geranium, granola fruits and coconut yoghurt. not sure if we will ever get a chia pot as incredible as this again.

if you love sweets flourdrumneeds to be your go to! with chocolate studded cookies as big as your face, and all sorts of seasonal cakes, slices, tarts and home made ice creams. in true christmas spirit the cafe is decked out ready for santa to visit and munch on some boozy pudding and egg nog lamingtons.

when visiting sydney, we would highly recommend flourdrumas one of your first brunch spots, as this cafe embodies the soul of the suburb and you will never be disappointed by the menu.

this is an ideal weekend brunch spot. they have plenty of dining space and waiting times are not longer than 10 minutes. its situated in the quiet part of king street and it’s not hard to find parking in the neighbourhood.

the coffee was on point. slightly smallish cup but delicious. we had the avocado smash and thedrumbig breakfast. i must point out the avo was special. they have done their twist on it and it hit the spot. tangy and creamy and full of taste. came with a side of tomato.

thedrumbig breakfast was quite a treat. there were greens which was quite a pleasant addition. the beans was quite unique and tasted amazing. there was a sweetness to it along with a hit of spice and veges. the bacon was worth commending. quite juicy and delicious. i would definitely be visiting this café again and strongly recommend it to everyone.

i finally got to try the beautiful dishes at flourdrumincluding their famous giant cookies and lamb ragu with homemade tagliatelle which did not disappoint and tasted as good as it looked. i love how the lamb ragu infuses some asian flavours with the addition of chilli.

what i really enjoyed about dining here was that the owner came over to talk to us to explain the dishes which was a lovely touch. flourdrumwill be opening up for dinner and featuring new dinner time dishes which will be an exciting addition.

the dishes i ate were:

french lentilles du puy soup consists of blue puy lentils, garlic confit, fresh curry leaves and herbs from our garden, served with sourdough toast. it was a warming, tasty and healthy soup which i would happily have again! 😋

moutai cured atlantic salmon with flying fish roe, free range poached egg, potato harsh browns and a leaf, herb and pickled fennel salad. i loved how the salmon was cured differently with this traditional chinese wine.

corn off the cob and fresh herb fritters with avocado, bulgarian feta, cherry tomatoes and free range poached egg. a good classic corn fritter.

house made pappardelle, 8 hour slow braised lamb shank ragu with an asian-style shallot and chilli infused olive oil, cyprian volcanic black sea salt. as mentioned above, loved this dish!

chinese roast bbq duck ravioli dumplings with egg noodles, chinese greens with a duck and mushroom broth. this was a dish that they brought back to the menu, loved the east meets west fusion flavours!

banoffee buttermilk pancakes with grilled caramelised cavendish bananas, dulce de lethe, toffee, whipped pure cream and mascarpone, toasted anzac biscuit crumbles with maple syrup. this was amazing - the pancakes were so fluffy and these flavours worked so well!

other delicious desserts tried included black forest lamington, winter pavlova cake, milo mousse and malt cream lamington with crunchy milo bits and toasted coconuts.

and of course, the famous giant cookies which were giant on taste - plenty of chocolate chips and a nice cake like crumbly texture.

i dined as a guest of flour drum.

in this short piece, i visit one of zomato's most top rated cafes in sydney and i try their famous giant m&m's cookie, and one dish makes it to the top of my list this winter.

flourdrumhad been on my radar for quite some time. after seeing it posted on instagram a picture of a giant cookie sprawling with m&ms, there was no surprise that it caused quite a stir in the sydney food community, and after investigating what the fuss was about i knew i had to get my hands on one of those monstrous cookies myself.

located at the southern end of king street (far end from sydney uni/broadway), flourdrumis a vibrant neighbourhood favourite known for its seasonal cafe menu alongside a wonderful range of freshly baked cakes and sweet treats. with a new dinner service just around the corner, diners can look forward to hearty winter warmers including the popular lamb ragù pappardelle with silky smooth pasta made fresh in-house with a subtle (and delicious!) asian twist.

i visited flourdrumon a saturday for lunch with a friend. we managed to get one of the last tables as the place was very busy! despite this, we were provided menus and water promptly upon being seated. we both ordered orange juice which was a good size, served ice cold and very refreshing. for the main event i had the lamb ragu parpadelle which was divine. i thoroughly enjoyed the fact that the parpadelle was made in house and was covered in an exquisite combination of flavours. a generous serving of pasta, lamb ragu and enough chilli to give it a kick without setting your mouth on fire. a great dish that i would go back for.

overall, a fabulous lunch experience in a quirky cafe hidden away down the far end of king street. will be back to try out more of the menu and the scrumptious looking desserts too.

this meal was paid for using a gifted voucher from the restaurant.
