flour drum newtown is a chic cafe serving all day breakfast, brunch, lunch and those late pick me up afternoon delights. it has an outside seating area and the cosy vibe continues throughout the front andbackdining areas with a rustic charm and a relaxed atmosphere. some walls are dedicated as an exhibition area for local artists and all artwork is available for purchase. but wait till you see the 12 metre stunning mural in the main dining area, it’s quite a statement!

the genuinely lovely staff made our lunch visit special, we kicked off with two equally good coffees, a flat white and long black.

my taste buds were tingling with excitement when my grilled chicken tenderloin burger arrive. fused with indian spices, topped with avocado, iceberg lettuce, spring onion, dripping chipotle mayo and beautifully presented between two soft and fluffy buns. the chips that came with the dish are crisp and golden on the outside, soft and fluffy on the inside. if you are into a bold and juicy chicken burger and best chips, this is for you.

my mate's order was the house-made pappardelle pasta with an 8-hour slow braised lamb shank ragu. as we always do, we share whatever we order so we can compare notes. the marriage of the flat pasta and lamb shank ragu is a knock out, it’s lush, silky and packed full of flavour, the chilli infused olive oil added zing to the palate. for serious pasta lovers, this one is with a high note.

dining at flour drum is not complete without trying one of their to die for cakes, yes, just check out their cake display stand!

so next time when you find yourself shopping or wondering around king st. newtown, just look for the the sign, ‘flour drum newtown’ and check out this stylish cafe and treat yourself for a hearty meal or coffee and cake.

a cozy cafe with all-day breakfast menu, service is friendly. thebackyard is a garden oasis. the wall is filled with fun quotes and art works for sale. the taste & presentation of the dishes are average.

loved our brunch here... it was one of those “this place is in my bookmarks and we’re nearby” but it turned out to be a great spot we will definitely comebackto - the staff were friendly, the menu interesting and flavours solid and the cute little backyard books and crannies were great little spots for a slow sunday brunch.

my friend insisted we walk here from usyd and that was probably the worst part of the experience. my friend and i ordered the chipotle spiced grilled chicken burger with fries and the pasta with slow braised lamb shank ragù and honestly the food was more than decent. the chicken was tender, the ragù was flavoursome and the fries! my oh my were they crunchy.

the overall ambience of the place was super nice (don’t be fooled by the size of the entrance because the cafe goes a lot deeper in) and halfway through the meal, a cat named yum-yum apparated into the room which was a nice touch.

the waitress was new and still getting use to things (she was very nice and friendly) and she made a small mistake forgetting to charge me for the side of fries! i let her know and her boss was very lovely and didn’t charge me for it! with or without the discount, the food was reasonably priced and i was very happy with the service. would definitely comebackand i recommend it for their good food and a good atmosphere.

situated in the worldly king street newtown, flour drum brings it all. whimsical, unique, kid friendly and above all delicious. the place itself is split into three sections and their courtyard transports you to the whimsical lands of the likes of alice in wonderland. i love the fact that resident bunny big daddy makes multiple appearances through brunch and so too the lively fight-fish, goldfish and budgies. as if that wasn’t enough, the food and drinks were exceptional. the banoffee buttermilk pancakes were a clear winner for the kids and i! can’t wait to bebackagain 😍😍😍😋😋😋😋🥞🥞🥞🥞🥞

brunch done right !
this just became my new favourite brunch spot in newtown.
hands down they’re the best in service, ambience and delicious plates!
it’s a relaxed environment that makes you feel at home.
owners and employees are caring about their customers.
food is delicious ! they’re making combinations of fresh ingredients with a very original touch !
i have a sweet tooth so i was one happy person when pancakes arrived and they tasted like heaven.

they have a variety of lamington cake that changes every week, i tried the chocolate one , but they also have matcha on some weeks, and maybe another creative one next week! surprise menu :)

here on the pictures you can see the cured salmon (my favourite as fish was fresh and it tasted amazing!) corn fritters (yummmm!) and a mushroom medley (gluten free and full of flavour)

for cakes and desserts we had: hazelnut cake, pancakes (fluffy!!) and the chocolate lamington.
i couldn’t pick a favourite. i’m comingbackagain and again !
they have a dinner now so that will be my next review from here.

close to the st peters end of king street in newtown, flour drum is home to the giant cookies and is a truly magical place to enjoy a wholesome meal or just coffee and sweets with a friend.

always greeted with a genuine smile its impossible not to be happy and feel the good vibes as soon as you walk in. the first section of the cafe is all coffee and cakes! their talented creative mind the moonlight baker is always dreaming up delicious
sweet treats for their front displays. there is ample seating in the main dining area for big groups and events, then furtherbackis a beautiful outside area filled to the brim with plants, flowers and all sorts of surprises.

if you’re a pancakes for breakfast kinda person you simply cannot pass up their fluffy banoffee buttermilk pancakes! loaded with caramelised banana, dulce de leche, mascarpone whipped cream, anzac biscuits crumble and a toffee topper, we would go as far as saying these were the best pancakes we have had in sydney in a very long time!

if you’re a savoury fan the kweichow moutai prince house cured salmon with poached eggs is a fresh alternative to a salmon benedict. topped with flying fish roe, potato hash browns and a fresh herb and pickled fennel salad this is a perfectly healthy gf option.

we also loved the open faced omelette with zucchini ribbons, edamame, red veined sorrel and radish, and has to try their perfectly curated chia pot with coconut water, strawberry jelly, cherry compote, lemon scented geranium, granola fruits and coconut yoghurt. not sure if we will ever get a chia pot as incredible as this again.

if you love sweets flour drum needs to be your go to! with chocolate studded cookies as big as your face, and all sorts of seasonal cakes, slices, tarts and home made ice creams. in true christmas spirit the cafe is decked out ready for santa to visit and munch on some boozy pudding and egg nog lamingtons.

when visiting sydney, we would highly recommend flour drum as one of your first brunch spots, as this cafe embodies the soul of the suburb and you will never be disappointed by the menu.

i’ve been once before during day time for cake & coffee. their selection of sweets in the cabinet is mouthwatering. recently i wentbackto try their dinner menu. we really enjoy their crispy wontons, lime & chilli prawn angel hair pasta. of course we had to try their desserts- they had bombe alaska and choc chip cookie dough skillet. we ordered both and loved them, especially the cookie dough! friendly service and relaxed vibe, we had a great night here.

i finally got to try the beautiful dishes at flour drum including their famous giant cookies and lamb ragu with homemade tagliatelle which did not disappoint and tasted as good as it looked. i love how the lamb ragu infuses some asian flavours with the addition of chilli.

what i really enjoyed about dining here was that the owner came over to talk to us to explain the dishes which was a lovely touch. flour drum will be opening up for dinner and featuring new dinner time dishes which will be an exciting addition.

the dishes i ate were:

french lentilles du puy soup consists of blue puy lentils, garlic confit, fresh curry leaves and herbs from our garden, served with sourdough toast. it was a warming, tasty and healthy soup which i would happily have again! 😋

moutai cured atlantic salmon with flying fish roe, free range poached egg, potato harsh browns and a leaf, herb and pickled fennel salad. i loved how the salmon was cured differently with this traditional chinese wine.

corn off the cob and fresh herb fritters with avocado, bulgarian feta, cherry tomatoes and free range poached egg. a good classic corn fritter.

house made pappardelle, 8 hour slow braised lamb shank ragu with an asian-style shallot and chilli infused olive oil, cyprian volcanic black sea salt. as mentioned above, loved this dish!

chinese roast bbq duck ravioli dumplings with egg noodles, chinese greens with a duck and mushroom broth. this was a dish that they broughtbackto the menu, loved the east meets west fusion flavours!

banoffee buttermilk pancakes with grilled caramelised cavendish bananas, dulce de lethe, toffee, whipped pure cream and mascarpone, toasted anzac biscuit crumbles with maple syrup. this was amazing - the pancakes were so fluffy and these flavours worked so well!

other delicious desserts tried included black forest lamington, winter pavlova cake, milo mousse and malt cream lamington with crunchy milo bits and toasted coconuts.

and of course, the famous giant cookies which were giant on taste - plenty of chocolate chips and a nice cake like crumbly texture.

i dined as a guest of flour drum.

i visited flour drum on a saturday for lunch with a friend. we managed to get one of the last tables as the place was very busy! despite this, we were provided menus and water promptly upon being seated. we both ordered orange juice which was a good size, served ice cold and very refreshing. for the main event i had the lamb ragu parpadelle which was divine. i thoroughly enjoyed the fact that the parpadelle was made in house and was covered in an exquisite combination of flavours. a generous serving of pasta, lamb ragu and enough chilli to give it a kick without setting your mouth on fire. a great dish that i would gobackfor.

overall, a fabulous lunch experience in a quirky cafe hidden away down the far end of king street. will bebackto try out more of the menu and the scrumptious looking desserts too.

this meal was paid for using a gifted voucher from the restaurant.

this restaurant is very famous on instagram, a lot of foodies went there and published beautiful pictures of cakes and dishes so i couldnt stop myself when i went to newtown and was starving at lunch time.
the restaurant is very nice with a kind ofbackroom , the venue is quite big , which is nice because it can be quite crowded on weekend. we were 6 and we all took something different. so i had a nice overview of what food they provide.
the quiche was really good, we would have like a portion a bit bigger but it was still very tasy. the marinated salmon with campari and gin was really good and very original.  the pork burger was also very well made with a lot of flavours. and i personally took the mushroom medley on toast and it was really good. i love the fact that they have quite a big range of food, which means that everybody will find something they like. and when i was paying the bill i decided to buy one piece of cake because they were to attractive to not give a try. and i took the crème brulee lamington. i am not a huge fan of lamingtons normally, to dry for me but this one was well filled with crème. and the pieces of cake are huge which is very good for the price.
i totally join the foodie community comments on this restaurant and would advice people to give a try too.

delicious...
actually that's the name of bunny pet that you can fine organically running around at thebackof this cafe.
i'm super excited to see this cute little creature.
as for my picollo, nothing extraordinary, however it's nice to have fresh brewed good coffee before your meal.
i did ordered the bbq duck home made dumpling, served with duck and dried porcini broth, egg noodle, bokchoy and snow pea sprout.
a nice asian influence dish, and their dumpling was plum and juicy.
my friend ordered gin cure salmon with poached egg and potato hash brown. it's was delicious too.
if you are cake lover, you can't miss the lamington display as you walk into the dining area.
3 chooses today, matcha, cream brûlée and strawberry cream ( if i'm not mistaken )
take away the cream brûlée and also matcha lamington, it was soooo good.

the burgers were sensational! we had the beef brisket and pork belly burgers, both were so good and just melted in the mouth. polenta chips were a bit of letdown though, they were so oily. but then again the green smoothie was just perfect. i felt the place could do with a bit more lighting to get that bright outdoorsy feeling. staff were friendly and nice, very fast and efficient service. all in all was a nice experience although price wise it could hurt your pocket a bit. definitely gobackthere and all try more of their yummy menu. 👌🏼
