i’ve been once before during day time for cake & coffee. their selection of sweets in the cabinet is mouthwatering. recently i went back to try their dinner menu. we really enjoy their crispy wontons, lime & chilli prawn angel hair pasta. of course we had to try their desserts- they had bombe alaska and choc chip cookie dough skillet. we ordered both and loved them, especially the cookie dough! friendly service and relaxed vibe, we had a great night here.

when your looking for a cookie as big as your face, then this is the place to go!

as soon as you walk in you'll see these massive cookies. and then you walk around the corner and see these amazing cakes. all you'll want to do is eat it all but then reality sets in and you remember you only came for breakfast or lunch.

so we had one of their amazing cookies and also a creme brulee hazelnut slice.

the staff were very nice and polite as well, would high recommend.

wonderful place, wonderful foods. the flat wihte tastes really good. if you like eating sweet things, the pancake is recommended. after finishing the red velvet and the pancake, the chocolate cake tastes a little bit too sweet.

i came here for a long relaxing lunch and to take respite from the wind outside which turns out to be the perfect function of this cafe. not only do they have a very trendy and gorgeous atmosphere but there are a few different sections to choose from depending on the level of seclusion you’re after. of course it’s undeniable that the food is tremendous and completely lives up to the hype. can not recommend this place more!!

my second visit, it’s on quiet friday morning with only 3 tables filled.

i had a nice strong cup of flat white and their famous mushroom medley. the coffee was on point it was beautiful, strong and silky. the meal was tasty though the poached egg wasn’t the best one, somehow it was very watery and splashed all over when i was cutting it in a half. i was curious and it didn’t smell, so i finished it all off as i was pretty hungry at that point. had a stomachache right after lol.

unfortunately the service wasn’t the best, i never felt so unwelcomed at any cafe for breakfast before. the waiting staff was a bit grumpy, which i found a bit weird considering it was early morning and they weren’t extremely busy, though he was chatty and friendly to any customers after me. i was well presented mind you, not smelly nor looking horrible lol. the cashier had a better attitude fortunately.

won’t come back.

food was bland and the wait time appauling (50mins for 2 dishes) - do not recommend. there are so many better choices in newtown.

we did not have any coffee or cakes, so i will not comment on those.

the milkshake was incredibly bland. i would suggest you go to a supermarket and get yourself the cheapest chocolate milk and it will taste better. definitely not enough cocoa. the ice was not crushed enough, so the drink tasted grainy and shards got stuck in the straw. way too much use of ice, which added to the blandness.

the pasta was also a disappointment. given the fact that we waited 50 minutes, hunger usually makes food taste better. this definitely did not happen to these dishes. the "hand-made" pappardelle was abysmal. the pasta had clearly not had enough gluten development, and there was no bite to it. the ragu itself was bland also. no seasoning and no body to the sauce. presentation was also odd, pasta on top of the sauce (?!). the chef seems to have a weird liking to garnish dishes with spring onions.

the omelette - again, disappointing. eggs were overcooked and mushrooms lacked flavour.

computer problems should not be blamed for bad wait times given that we weren’t even in peak time, mr. manager. i’m glad you stand by your bland dishes, all the best to you.

they see you eat with your eyes and ohh man this place does that saying justice. not only does it look as good as it tastes, but the staff create this nice relaxed atmosphere. everywhere you look there is something that catches your eyes, whether its the outdoor garden, quails or beautiful artwork this place is funky as! if you're anything like me if i like a place i'm there for hours and that is what happened.

the menu has a little bit of everything from breakfast to lunch, from sweet sensations to savoury bites. crowd favourites corn off the cob fritters, banoffee buttermilk pancake stack, bbq duck and forest mushroom dumplings and the list could go on..

now i'm a sucker for sweet things so it comes to no surprise that when the pancake stack came out, it had me drooling. soft, fluffy, warm and sweet, ticks all the boxes for what a good stack should taste like and if they could bottle up their sauce dulce de leche it would be sold out in hours...! (highly recommend)

plan a day out and make the most of what newtown has to offer and be sure to grab one of their famous cookies the size of your face to go or one of the other sweet treats.

i'm excited to see what they have installed for dinners which are starting this august, so keep your eye's peeled for more.

i finally got to try the beautiful dishes at flour drum including their famous giant cookies and lamb ragu with homemade tagliatelle which did not disappoint and tasted as good as it looked. i love how the lamb ragu infuses some asian flavours with the addition of chilli.

what i really enjoyed about dining here was that the owner came over to talk to us to explain the dishes which was a lovely touch. flour drum will be opening up for dinner and featuring new dinner time dishes which will be an exciting addition.

the dishes i ate were:

french lentilles du puy soup consists of blue puy lentils, garlic confit, fresh curry leaves and herbs from our garden, served with sourdough toast. it was a warming, tasty and healthy soup which i would happily have again! 😋

moutai cured atlantic salmon with flying fish roe, free range poached egg, potato harsh browns and a leaf, herb and pickled fennel salad. i loved how the salmon was cured differently with this traditional chinese wine.

corn off the cob and fresh herb fritters with avocado, bulgarian feta, cherry tomatoes and free range poached egg. a good classic corn fritter.

house made pappardelle, 8 hour slow braised lamb shank ragu with an asian-style shallot and chilli infused olive oil, cyprian volcanic black sea salt. as mentioned above, loved this dish!

chinese roast bbq duck ravioli dumplings with egg noodles, chinese greens with a duck and mushroom broth. this was a dish that they brought back to the menu, loved the east meets west fusion flavours!

banoffee buttermilk pancakes with grilled caramelised cavendish bananas, dulce de lethe, toffee, whipped pure cream and mascarpone, toasted anzac biscuit crumbles with maple syrup. this was amazing - the pancakes were so fluffy and these flavours worked so well!

other delicious desserts tried included black forest lamington, winter pavlova cake, milo mousse and malt cream lamington with crunchy milo bits and toasted coconuts.

and of course, the famous giant cookies which were giant on taste - plenty of chocolate chips and a nice cake like crumbly texture.

i dined as a guest of flour drum.

picked this place for sunday brunch, had read good reviews about food. it looks tiny at the entrance but has ample of space inside which is cozy and artistic. alfresco is like home style backyard with loads of plants and stuffs where the pet cat visits you to engage you while awaiting food. what made me upset was the lamb ragu pappardelle dish, it was missing soul in it. so much hype about it on social media but big disappointment it was utterly bland and charred ridiculously. however the wait staff is very warm and polite.

just looking at the variety of mushrooms makes me happy! there’s swiss brown, enoki, shiitake, field and oyster. amazing flavour and particularly love how the oyster mushroom absorbs all the garlicy sauce goodness. oh and the spiced pumpkin had a hint of cumin which was wonderful and mum dunked her remaining bread into it.

in this short piece, i visit one of zomato's most top rated cafes in sydney and i try their famous giant m&m's cookie, and one dish makes it to the top of my list this winter.

flour drum had been on my radar for quite some time. after seeing it posted on instagram a picture of a giant cookie sprawling with m&ms, there was no surprise that it caused quite a stir in the sydney food community, and after investigating what the fuss was about i knew i had to get my hands on one of those monstrous cookies myself.

located at the southern end of king street (far end from sydney uni/broadway), flour drum is a vibrant neighbourhood favourite known for its seasonal cafe menu alongside a wonderful range of freshly baked cakes and sweet treats. with a new dinner service just around the corner, diners can look forward to hearty winter warmers including the popular lamb ragù pappardelle with silky smooth pasta made fresh in-house with a subtle (and delicious!) asian twist.

super friendly and attentive service. however the food didn’t reflect the great rating here, the chips were not even crispy, quite disappointed.
