fat dog cafe & bar

very disappointed- arrived for brunch and ordered the veggie breakfast and the signature dog's bollox burger. looks better than they taste. very bland, meat pattie was very dense and overcooked. nothing was salted, not even the fries. coffee was burnt. unfortunately not worth the money paid for; would not come back again.

i am sad to report our beloved fat dog isn’t what it used to be! on our family trip sometime ago we were here each morning before starting a busy day filling up our tummies, plates very big and it was tasty. now sadly it was a big disappointment this weekend! full works and vege works breakfast is absolutely overpriced for what you get! blend, very ordinary breakfast at ridiculous price then with a beetroot chutney that unfortunately didn’t taste like anything. service was fine and quick but now that the huge plates are off tad menu i’m sad and disappointed. sorry fat dog!

the atmosphere was really cool in there. the staff were lovely, they were able to answer all the questions that we had, even when we asked what the names of the fish were! i had a citrus slice which was so big that i had to take it home with me. the smoothie was delicious and so was the iced chocolate. if we're ever nearby again, we will definitely go back!

came here for breakfast on a tuesday morning. there was plenty of seating, a funky atmosphere and the food was reasonably priced. i ordered my usual sides- unfortunately they had no avocado despite being on the menu so i bought my own. the serving of salmon was also on the smaller side. good vibes and extensive menu for the non fussy without dietary restrictions.

i ordered a breakfast bowl with muesli and fruit - but the portion was very small, and the orange on top tasted incredibly bitter? my partner ordered the vege works - was also disappointingly small, two huge slices of toast, with a token gesture of mushrooms and spinach. the potatoes were yum though. not hugely vegan friendly.

dog bollox burger looks great and huge but the taste is bland, very bland. did not enjoy the meat patties at all. fries were not nice, a lot of other customers didn’t eat their fries either. will not be returning here

me and my partner come here for breakfast. was about 9am or close. we were in rotorua for our anniversary & come down from auckland.

i ordered the fat dog works & my partner had the eggs benedict.

fat dog works was ok. the toast that they gave was massively thick and hard to eat so i just didnt eat it. the sausage & bacon were cooked fine. all eggs that come with meals are fried otherwise specified which is fine but they didnt ask me how i liked my fried eggs cooked & i forgot to let them know so the eggs were super runny. i think the only thing i really liked was the hash brown which is quite sad considering the plate consisted of toast, bacon, mushrooms, sausage, tomato & a hashbrown.

my partner said his eggs benedict was ok & the hollandaise wasnt great. didnt really have much to say about it to be honest.

everything was ok. not delicious. not disgusting. it was ok.

i ordered the french toast with fruit. portion sizes are very generous which is appreciated and makes the pricing worthwhile. the quality of the food is also very good. maybe i’m biased because this place has been a staple when visiting rotorua, and will continue to be so. i would recommend going here for anyone visiting in rotorua because of the quality and sizes.
an added bonus is the atmosphere because it is very cozy without trying to fit into an aesthetic that most cafes attempt these days. it’s interior feels very nostalgic because of its consistency throughout the years and therefore feels authentic and genuine.

we ordered the pork ribs, fried chicken, and beef salad. i only tried the chicken and pork ribs. their portion sizes were quite big and it was hard to finish, so it was worth the price in terms of volume. the flavor of the pork ribs was quite good, smoky and sweet. however it was basically like pork jerky, way too tough and hard to eat. the fried chicken was also very dry, slightly burnt, and tasted bland. the chips were not crunchy enough. i'm not sure how their burgers taste, but i wouldn't mind coming back to give them a try as they looked quite good.

we had breakfast in late january. spectacular meals and impressive portions, particularly the french toast. prompt service from justin. many thanks to you justine and also marty for looking after us while in rotorua for the short time we were there. from experience of managing cafes in the past, the mad dog cafe is a sure thing on your 'things to do in rotorua' list.  carlos

popped in for a bite to eat for lunch. lovely service, huge portions. food was delivered quickly and hot. would be nice if the patty was home made, burger lacked that wow factor for me, was good. nachoes were good! dessert was great, huge we couldn't even finish it!!

dinner at fatdog cafe on saturday 15 september 2018. arrived at around 7pm. excellent service excellent iced chocolate... we ordered 2 gourmet beef burgers room for improvement but reasonable quality produce

stopped here for breakfast and i was really surprised by how good the food was! i ordered the waffles, and they were amazing! they definitely knew how to balance out the sweet with the savoury, but the only thing i would pick on is the price, which was a bit more up there than it should’ve been.

the service was great. i was with a big group and our meals came surprisingly fast, and the servers were very kind.

came to this place when me and a bunch of my friends were on a road trip.

to start off the menu had sooo many things it took us each about 20 mins to decide what to eat. but in the end ordered a burger that i had to literally wrestle to finish it off. the food was amazing. the chips, the burgers and sandwiches just amazing. the desserts and coffee were definitely the best way to end the meal here.

been here 2 times already. the coffee was alright. last time i ordered an eggs benedict. it tasted alright.... but this time i ordered a steak sandwich. it tasted bland and the service was bad. the worse steak sandwich that i have ever had....
