we went to fancy hanks a few weekends ago for the first time, we ordered the pitmaster bbq platter and got:

🥚 deviled eggs
🥜 mixed nuts
🥩beefbriskets
🍗 buffalo wings
🍗 fried chicken
🍞 corn bread
🍟 seasoned chips
🥗 coleslaw

everything was great, full of flavor, good portions and cooked perfectly! thebeefbrisket was incredibly tender and fell apart so easily with just a touch. the wings were our favorite for sure! also, the corn bread was amazing & we’re still daydreaming about it. we 100% recommend you to try their platter 😋

the only downside was the restaurant space itself. we went there on a somewhat hot day and unfortunately they only have two wind pipes which weren’t really helping nor cool. i was struggling with the heat so we had to get the food to go and went home (luckily we live close-by!). so our recommendation is either get a takeaway or wait to dine in until the weather cools down! ❄️

thebeefbrisket was delicious and the sides were great - recommend the macaroni cheese and romaine lettuce. however, we ordered a whole rack of ribs - it came out very quickly and clearly had been cooked earlier and reheated/kept hot for a long time. the meat was overcooked and had no tenderness. loved the rooftop bar, good friday night atmosphere and espresso martini.

celebrated my birthday here a while ago. catered to a large group of us with good service. had thebeefbrisket which was tasty. wanted to try the pork ribs as heard it’s yummy but it was sold out. got the mac and cheese which did not disappoint

terrible meat ive never had. we had this driedbeefbrisket&cold pulled pork in 40min. and other table too, they are waiting for their food at least over 40min just like us. never come back for sure

fancy hanksbeefbrisket is incredible. we tried it out when melbourne was in lockdown and it’s seriously wet our appetite to visit them again soon for more of their dishes. tender, juicy, melt in your mouth brisket. yum!

staff was friendly and attentive, i will give them that. but this place has been very underwhelming for my expectations from what i’ve read from other reviews and images on their website.

the main disappointment i have with fancy hank’s is their signature meats, firstly, their victorian baby back ribs, on their website they state that this dish has to be pre-ordered 24 hours in advanced due to limited availability and perhaps maybe to serve it at it’s best served moment, i could not have been more wrong, the pork ribs were dry to the bone. for something you’d have to pre-order, you would expect the meat to slide right of the bone as you bite into it, tender, juicy, and full of flavour. as for fancy hanks, the white sauce just makes the pork taste creamy, perhaps an effort to mask the dryness of the pork ribs. i’m fairly confident those ribs did not come off the grill and were pre-cooked before i even arrived due to several factors:

1. pork was dry when ribs should have the meat slide off them
2. charred parts of the pork ribs, supposed to be crispy when off the grill, instead could not be bitten and was rock hard.
3. temperature of the meat when served was room temperature.

now, onto the brisket, oh the brisket. this is what american barbeque epitomises. slow cooked brisket that’s tender and falling apart, perfect smoke ring that infuses smokey flavour into the brisket. all of the above did not apply to my experience with their briskets. as you can see from the images i have attached, it was dry, very very dry. reminds of an overnight serving of dry pulledbeefonce i started chewing into it. the only tender part was the fat on the brisket. the meat itself was dry, and required a good bite to break the meat down. looking at pictures on their website and rave reviews from other people, i don’t know if i was just unlucky when i visited fancy hanks or their standards have dropped and i came to their restaurant too late. for the price i paid for the meal, i can easily name 30 other places in melbourne cbd where you can get better value for money with more memorable food experiences that have been consistent with their performance over the last 3 years i’ve been living here.

i was expecting a good meal in celebration of my partner’s birthday, i honestly waited a long time to come to this place, but i guess my cravings for american style barbeque will have to continue it’s wait. this has been disappointing for me, and if i ever visit them again and the experience is the same, i’m done hoping for anything better from them.

on a side note, the deviled eggs where delicious. that’s pretty much it. good service, good deviled eggs, but their “barbeque” did not feel authentic and felt like overnight servings. harsh criticisms but definitely justified and fair. i feel like this needs to be heard by them if they only want to improve and be consistent.

outstanding food. i had thebeefbrisket, pulled pork and corn bread. everything was brilliant with the brisket just falling apart.
was a little difficult getting the staff attention but other than that it was a great experience

great drink selections for starters, not sure what this drink is called (some sort of g&t) but i was pleasantly surprised! food was great, between my friend and i ,we shared thebeefbrisket, lamb ribs and a few sides. amazing flavour and very tender meat. great place for after work hangouts!

thank goodness for the pitmaster’s selection. the menu had so much to choose from it was hard to nail it down to a few. the pitmaster’s selection had 3 different types of smoked meats:beefbrisket, pulled pork shoulder and sausage link (eitherbeefor pork), a choice of multiple sides ranging from baked beans, corn brea, fries and the option of choosing between freak milk rolls or biscuits and a choice between of potato salad or coleslaw. all that for $50pp.

i’m happy to pay that much again because it was bloody spectacular! the meats were perfectly smoked to the point of being so tender. the sides were a perfect accompaniment.

the gentleman at the bar was exceptional. really love this place. don’t know why i didn’t try it sooner!

for a table of four, we ordered thebeefbrisket, pulled pork, 2 servings of the sausages (4 sausages in two different flavours), the bbq chips, coleslaw and fried cauliflowers. it was a perfect amount of food to share between us. i was surprised by how reasonable the price was! and thank you to the gentleman that served our table yesterday (sat the 29th of sep) with impeccable customer service :)

i had an enjoyable experience at fancy hanks tonight. being my second time visiting, i definitely ordered thebeefbrisket. i would highly recommend this as it is quite possibly my fave everbeefand great value (in my opinion). we also ordered devil eggs (yummooo), sausages, coleslaw, potato salad, chips, mac n cheese, corn bread and thebeefshort ribs.
i would recommend getting some salads with the meal as it is obviously meaty, and they complement well.
this meal was shared between 4 people, was a decent portion and it came to approx 45$ pp.
unfortunately, did not get the chance to try the pork ribs tonight as they had sold out. but will try next time as i will definitely be back :)

love fancy hanks! my husband says they make the best smoky-melt-in-the-mouthbeefbrisket he's ever had...and he's had a lot of brisket :d

their mac n cheese is also great.

meat lover haven fancy hank’s has a new menu and boy is it a crowd pleaser. the reinvigorated menu of american-style slow-cooked barbecue is everything loyal followers have come to love and more.
an absolute must-have is thebeefbrisket with black pepper rub (using pasture-fedbeeffrom gippsland with a marble score 2+). particularly noteworthy for its beefy flavours which have been enhanced by ample marinating before being smoked for hours. simply stunning.

the service was good enough but the food is over priced for what comes out you order ribs with the assumption you are going to get a rack for $58 receive onebeefrib which was very cold and i know meat comes out pink but this was uncomfortably pink. the sides were actually delicious despite the meat being very disappointing considering this place is supposed to specialise with there meat

our waitress was very lovely and gave really great service by explaining the menu. in terms of the meat, the brisket was definitely the highlight. we also had thebeefshort ribs but it was too fatty for my liking as you could see fatty streaks in every bit of the meat. i normally don’t eat chicken wings but these were huge! and tasty as there was a fair bit of meat on them.. more like turkey wings! lol we also had a couple sides, but the fries were the nicest.
we did find it strange that there were no lamb ribs at that we had the last short rib at 7pm..
overall good experience
