this ain't no story~ you walk along west 4th and a large restaurant window filled with quick moving bodies catches your eye. this is "fable", a new restaurant built where "fuel" and "refuel" use to live. much has changed in the last two years. you are free to stand on the sidewalk and watch as masterful chefs bring organic and local proteins and vegetables together, or you can come in and experience their vibrant as whimsical dishes in person.   "from farm to table" is their slogan, and they take their theme seriously. this idea is the brain child of trevor bird, a contestant on "top chef canada", season 2. (i am afoodnetwork junkie). the idea came on an episode where contestants had to come up with a restaurant concept to wow the judges. farm fresh "fable" was trevor's. he returned home, and by the looks of it was able to successfully turn this idea into reality.   they offer top quality foods without any pretentions that may accompany it. you are made to feel right at home with a g

my sandwich had all yourfoodfreshness in it. but my sandwich choice (eggplant parmesan) was too greasy and salty for my poor aging body.

i truly recommend that you get down to fable kitchen and try what is sure to be one of those happy shuddering culinary moments for you!

as i have mentioned before we are so very fortunate to have a culinary disneyland unfolding more and more each day in the vancouver lower mainland. trevor bird – one of top chef canada’s top competitors opened fable in approx april 2012. the restaurant is is the perfect size and laid out in a comfortable way for you to enjoyfoodand drinks with friends or co-workers as well as a nice romantic dinner with your love.
if you are fortunate enough to be able to sit at the “chefs wood” then you are in for a treat.
whether you see chef trevor bird or any of his team commanding the kitchen you will see the workings of a well oiled (olive probably) kitchen machine.

fabulous fable kitchen!. best-food-ever! this place is hard to get a seat but we came right at 5pm and got seated right away. service was friendly, atmosphere casual and menu was short...but everything on it is amazing! we got three appetizers...kept ordering more as each one was so good and we couldn't decide...chickpea fritters with curry mayo, smoked salmon on cornbread pancake and the house-made cornbread with miso butter...freshestfoodi have ever tasted...the flavours were incredible....mmmmm! for dinner i decided to be bold and try duck for the first time in my life...it was served smoked, with applesauce and rhubarb, presented on top of quinoa laden with hazelnuts and dried fruit...it was the most delectable thing i have ever tasted! my mouth exploded with all the fresh flavours and textures. my husband got the butcher's cut steak served with house fries and black pepper jam...he loved it and would not share with me, it was so good! the only bad thing is we were so full by the end of this delicious meal that we had no room for their mouth-watering dessert list. we will definitely be back to try that next time. can't wait!!

lives up to the hype. five friends had a fantastic dinner there. thefoodwas exceptional. both imaginative and unpretentious. not to mention great cocktails and wonderful service. it's a little spendy but the portions are generous. the one drawback was our entrees took a while to come out (more than 30 mins after the appetizer) so if it's really busy i recommend getting an appy and a stiff drink or two to tide you over. reservations a must. i was ready to go back a week later

i was wandering why i was having difficulties describing how i felt about this place and then i realized that i simply didnt have a lot of feelings for it. i visited 3 or 4 times and every time i felt the same. thefoodwas good, a little flat on taste and flavor, but still good. for some reason i didnt feel that i would want to come back for it soon. the service was friendly but friendly is probably the only word i can find to describe it.

one thing i noticed on my every visit was that communication between the floor and the kitchen staff was a bit indescreet and loud. we had to listen to them throwing personal remarks at each other which, i thought, was somewhat disrespectful to the people they are serving.

every time i try a different wine but never had an urge to find out more about it to, may be, pick up a bottle later at a local wine store. good sommelier cares about quality of a glass his selection is served in... these glasses are definitely not the finest.

the place was not disappointing but i never heard from my party "let's do fable kitchen again!"

i don’t typically take time to write reviews, so hopefully that will only help prove how awesome this place is. i came here for the first time for my boyfriend’s birthday. we had heard great things but were simply blown away. thefoodwas complex, original and simply divine. we shared the house special appetizer of burrata with potato croquettes which we couldn’t get enough of. for mains, we got the smoked duck breast and the scallops & pork belly. we also for a serving of cornbread on the side to share. everything was to die for. but what made that even better? we had incredible service. our waitress was kind, engaging, thoughtful and so sweet. she treated us impeccably and always ensured we had everything we needed.

my husband and i came here for our anniversary. i like the decor of the restaurant, it looked rustic and romantic but it was quite noisy and it was full house. for the appetizer, we had chickpea fritters and it was very tasty. it was the combination of sweet and sour flavour which was delicious. for entrees, we had the pasta of the day and the scallop and pork belly with salad and hummus. both dishes were delicious. my husband love the scallop and pork flavour but he did complain the scallop and pork belly dish was very small portion. i loved the pasta, it was very flavourful. for dessert, we ordered the maple syrup cake with a scoop of ice cream on top. we both found the dessert was a too sweet and a disappointment. the customer service was friendly and very efficient in cleaning the dirty dishes. we love thefoodhere but we do find the price is expensive for the small entree portions.

thefoodhere is really good. love the atmosphere in the restaurant. the only downside in my opinion would be how pretentious the restaurant makes the staff. when they tell you the specials and serve yourfoodthey basically recite some poetry for you.. which makes it a bit awkward at the table.

i loved everything about this restaurant.

the staff were really friendly, very informative and great with suggestions and recommendations.

thefoodwas absolutely delicious. everything was so good. we ordered everything they suggested and then some.

chickpea fritters: yummy. the crispy deep fried goodness paired nicely with the creamy curry mayo and pickled red onion.

best canned tuna: i didn't know what to expect but this was surprisingly good.

spaghetti and meatball: so good. duck meatball with the juices bursting out tasted great with the tagliatelle and creamy sauce.

gnocchi with braised beef: i didn't get it with the pulled pork. i got it with the special of the day i forgot what it was... some sort of braised beef. this was my favourite dish. i could eat it all day. i often find gnocchi are small, doughy and chewy. their gnocchi is like no other. it's big pillowy soft, sticky and delicious. everything about this dish was perfect. braised beef and the sauce was on point!!

my friends ordered the salmon dish, butcher's cut, and the duck breast. they all enjoyed their dishes too!

desserts: smores was our favourite! perfect combo chocolate, marshmallows and ice cream. lemon meringue parfait was good but a little too sweet for me.

i tried their cocktail "a kiss from a rose" because you know. seal. and that was a great song. the drink was really good. almost too good. like a fruitier and juicier version of a vodka mojito/pink lemonade. very refreshing! probably my new summer drink! summer hasn't started but you get my point. the drink was a bit small but i still loved it. i would have ordered more if it was a tad bigger.

what i also liked about this restaurant is who supplies some of their meat. my friend is muslim and is familiar with fable's beef supplier and knows they are halal. so he got to order their beef dishes which was so awesome! he always has to order seafood or vegetarian dishes when we go out. it was a nice change that's for sure.

i emailed to make a reservation, they were fast with responses and very accommodating. they also asked if we were celebrating an occasion and i told them we're celebrating a birthday and promotion. i thought they were going to do something special but they didn't. what was the point of asking?

besides that small confusion. i throughly enjoyed my experience at fable. i will definitely be back soon! brunch?

this is one of two restaurants in vancouver i've given a 5.0. fable is truly spectacular. it's really honestly incredible on all fronts without being pretentious. thefoodwas prepared with so much love. i had the tagliatelle with chorizo. it was perfectly balanced and bursting with flavor. the service was incredible. this is hands down my favorite restaurant in kitsilano now. i'm going to try everything on their menu!

visited for sunday brunch, even though the place was busy, the service was efficient and thefoodcame really quickly.
mushroom polenta: really, really salty. however, if you can get over how salty it was, it's still a nice dish. it had a comfyfoodvibe with a mixture of mushroom, kale, poached eggs, and fine cornmeal.
egg benny (cod special): the poached eggs were just the right consistency for me. slightly runny but not the type that will leak all over the plate. the cod special egg benny simply had some lemon-y cod mushed over the english muffins. the flavors were really nice but i wish they gave more fish than just a thin spread.
