4.5/5 (great atmosphere and service) (mount pleasant gem)

eight and 1/2 is aplacethat feels a little like home - wait, it did used to be a (heritage) home! which is super cool. a hidden gem may i say. the restaurant is a heritage house near main street and inside has this really alive atmosphere. when i first walked through the door, i saw two dogs playing in the "lawn" area which was already a good start to the late brunch.

pork_ninjas and i were welcomed with glass jars with water and cucumber. so refreshing and lovely!

my girlfriend wanted to come here and eat, one monday night when i had time off we showed up, i was surprised how busy thisplacewas at 8:00 pm. i soon realized that there is stand-up comedy, i guess it makes sense why they are busy. we didn't care for the stand up actually, just wanted to try the food. i asked them do we have to pay the $5 each if we eat and leave before the show starts they said yes. good because i wasn't about to give away $10 for something i didn't even want.

we were told to wait as there isn't anyplaceto sit, after ~5 minutes we were walked over to the bar. i told the waitress if it was okay we get a table instead, as there is an empty spot in the corner she said no, that's reserved for the stand-up comedian and crew. i said okay sure, we would still like to wait. after 5-10 minutes we noticed a group walked in and just started sitting there. she had just told us that it was reserved, clearly it was not. (as they were ordering drinks and food and watched the show. explain soon)

few minutes after that, another party of 4 left, and i thought okay, whatever we will just sit there instead no big deal. as soon as they left, a different waitress brought a couple to the table. that made me upset as there wasn't anyone waiting for tables before us or nothing. not a good way to start off the night.

we just sat at the bar and ordered our food at this time, wild mushroom risotto with salmon and a steak sandwich. the food took a while to come, my steak sandwich was not too bad, but the girlfriends risotto and salmon wasn't too good she told me. i tried it, i didn't like it as well. the risotto had this strange taste and the salmon was very dry. she barely touched the food.

at this time, the comedy show was about to start, as promised to leave before the show started we tried to flag down our waitress. the show had started and we were just sitting there still tiring to flag down a waitress. after we did we asked for the bill and to pack up the food. when she finally came back with the food she dropped it and left. we waited to flag her down again to bring us the bill. you know the drill, waited some more. when she finally brought it, we told them we were paying with credit card and she said she will be back with the machine. after waiting and waiting, i wanted to leave cash if we had enough. no luck, we just waited some more. when it was all said and done, i think i listened to half the show that i clearly wanted no part of.

a decent if not spectacularplacefor brunch or dinner. they've always got good beers on tap, the food is presented well and reasonably priced. it can get a little cramped, especially if you have a larger party, so phoning ahead is a good idea.

good afternoon and happy halloween! one of my favourite things to do is go for brunch. even better is brunch at 1pm. eight 1/2 restaurant lounge  (pronounced “eight and a half”) serves a couple of hashes in their brunch menu. do the hashes cure the previous night’s bad decisions? read on to find out. food: i had the feature hash which came as follows: steak bites, oven-baked potatoes (they call them hashbrowns), poached eggs with hollandaise, honeynut toast and a slice of watermelon. in a perfect world, this was completely delicious. it wasn’t bad though. i was really hoping the hashbrowns would come with some breading (i’ve been spoiled by mcdonald’s and denny’s) but they didn’t. i also found the softboiled poached egg was not very runny. maybe the egg hardened from all the excess heat around it? the honeynut toast was good though because of its buttery softness. the watermelon was not warm thank goodness. the steak bites were simply delicious and made for good hangover nibbles. overall i thought this was a pretty good plate and really filling but if you want a really good benny, the wallflower across the street gets my vote. features: this is a cute little restaurant tucked underneath a residential home. seating around 70, this is a spacious basement with some cool art of historic vancouver lining the walls. there’s a full bar so thisplacecan really turn into a lounge at night. service: service was great here. staff were super cool with handling our reservation, orders, and bill splitting (for the 4 of us in team joe’s house). water service was also very frequent but it wasn’t really full on the saturday noon hour we showed up so take that as you will. one-liner: comfort food for the brunch soul highlight: steak bites from the hash recommended for: those in need of meat and potatoes would i go back? no. dineout lunch brunch eggs bennies hash steak bites restaurant review foodblogger vancouver 604 yvr

overall we had a great time at eight ½ restaurant lounge during our visit. our server was really friendly, they had speedy service, and a clean, welcoming sports-bar like vibe. if you’re like us and prefer a quieter experience, we’d recommend you stop by during lunch time, as we pretty much had theplaceto ourselves.

eight 1/2 exceeded my expectations in more ways than one. i’m completely sold on its heritage lounge atmosphere and amazing food. the food portions aren’t big though, but for a light lunch or snack its just perfect. what’s even better is that they’re open till 2am on weekends, making it a greatplaceto stop by after a night out. i anticipate on coming here again and also trying out other food options are available in this area. three thumbs up!

won't be returning. had dinner there for the fist time last week. as a number of reviews state, the service isn't great, so we were expecting that. actually, the bartender/waiter was friendly and nice and did a great job. but eventually he went back behind the bar and the next server was completely underwhelmed by our presence. we actually sat there for 20 minutes after our meal - with the table cleared - before she came back over. then seemed surprised that we might want dessert, another drink, or coffee. we asked if they made specialty coffees - spanish in particular and she said 'yeah we can do that'. apparently not. it consisted of drip coffee with a shot of liqueur. no garnish, sugared rim, or whip. the big disappointment for the evening was the food. for appies, the perogies had no flavour and the chorizo wasn't the least bit spicy. the steak bites were overdone and chewy. three of us had pizzas - ok but nothing special (and with super thin, soggy crusts) and my mushroom risotto had so little flavour that i salted it twice, and i never salt my prepared food. when the desserts finally arrived -we shared 2 for the table -they again had little flavour. the pecan pie had no taste and the cheesecake was that cheap fluffy kind that doesn't seem to have any real cream cheese in it.

i really wanted to like thisplaceand fortunately, we had a great time with our out-of-town guests, but there are too many other restaurants to choose from. i can overlook quite a lot in order to give aplacea second try, but there just weren't any pluses here.

great food and service. was surprised to hear negative reviews about service. they were quite attentive. reservations are recommended so you don't end up waiting. you have to have the baked brie - its incredible. good atmosphere and a goodplaceto watch a canucks game.

disappointed. underwhelming after some good recommendations from friends.
service was poor. waiter was more interested in socializing with other staff than attending to tables.
food was mediocre to poor. tuna tataki was good, but cactus club has a better tuna tataki.... hollywood salad was simply salad in a bag with some pecans and goat cheese. i could have made better at home... mushroom risotto was poor. not creamy at all. basically just over cooked rice with some oil. i would not recommend. lemongrass mussels were average but the baguette it came with seemed to be one of those baguettes you get for home and then finish cooking in your own oven. totally not worth it.m superstore baguettes are far better quality.
overall theplaceseemed to be better suited to selling pitchers of sangria and beer than cooking good food.
i would not recommend.

ok, but could easily step it up a few notches. great looking place. menu looked solid.

went in for lunch. i was the only person there. ordered seared tuna sandwich and salad. chatted with the owner about local events and community organisations. nice guy.

after waiting for bout 25 mins, the waitress informed me she was very sorry but my order hadn't gone through so they were just starting it now. got my food to go, as lunch break was almost done. quite disappointed, having lunch out was a treat.

got my sandwich and salad back to the office. salad was delicious. strawberries, goats cheese, candied pecans, perfect amount of dressing. seared tuna was a bit raw for my tastes, barely seared. put the tuna in the toaster over at work for a minute or 2, back onto sandwich, and was delicious.

overall the food was lovely. but i still left with a slightly disappointed feeling. rather than really apologize, perhaps even offer me a drink while i waited, there was a chuckled 'wasn't my fault, sorry about that' kind of vibe.

i really really want to love this place. instead, i just liked it. it could so easily ramp things up a notch and become an exceptional, bustlingplacefor locals to love.

come on 8 1/2, you can do it!

eight â½ is located in a hundred-year old house in a relatively shabby neighbourhood. interestingly theplacelooks rather quaint and elegant from the outside, but the interior is just your average neighbourhood pub. the first thing we noticed after being seated was that there were a lot of flies zooming around; some were even lounging on an empty table beside ours. cleanliness is a pretty big deal for me, so i was feeling slightly turned off at this point and didn't have much hope for the food. we got a pitcher of sangria to start, and it was quite a bit stronger than i had expected. but it also came with a lot of ice, so it was a race against time to try and finish it before it was diluted by the melting ice. when the baked brie ($8.50) came, my doubts about the food immediately went out the window. this was so satisfying! the brie was wrapped in phyllo pastry and baked until the inside had barely melted. when i pried it open lightly with my fork, warm gooey cheese came oozing out.

thisplacewas easy enough to find, it's basically next to the balletplaceon main st. so go give it a try, i mean it, i was really impressed with both the service and the quality of food that we received. we got there early as usual, just after colleen got off work and we were both pretty hungry already. lol thisplacemight have been here for awhile already and i would not have even known had it not been for colleen. eight 1/2 restaurant lounge 151 e 8th ave, vancouver bc tel#: (604) 568-2703 theplacewas kinda empty but then again we were early. we started looking through the menu and stuff and as for our usual tuesday dinners, we have to have liquor. lol but seriously, we both have to stop drinking on an empty stomache. a nice bottle of well chilled chardonnay just to hit the spot. the decor inside is very hip and cool to the eyes, however the spacing is very very tight. it's almost like you don't have enough space to even set the plates down lo
