the bachelor's review. eight 1/2 restaurant & lounge, located on 151 e 8th ave, vancouver, tucked right behind the goh ballet academy on main st. an area where more and more boutique size bistros and restaurants are becoming more popular, eight 1/2 is definitely making a name for themselves in the neighborhood
the other night i was over at a friend's place, i overheard this conversation about this great place to have brunch at, so immediately i had to try. the very next morning (sunday) i showed up about 15 minutes before the door opens (11am), i realized there was already a little line up developing.
the restaurant isn't big, seats maybe 40 comfortably, but you don't feel cramped at all, in fact it feels very open. they also have a nice long bar that seats around 8. as soon as i sat down, i realized tables around me were quickly being taken up. the server came by and quickly apologize ahead of time if there will be any delay of service.
i was hungry so i decided to order the steak & eggs ($13 1/2), aaa 7oz blade steak, 2 eggs your way, garlic toast and rosemary potatoes. it wasn't anything fancy but the portion was generous & the steak was perfectly cooked to medium rare and it was nicely seasoned.
my friend had the cat in the hat eggs benedict ($8 1/2) black forest ham, 2 poached eggs, house hollandaise sauce served with rosemary potatoes. again nothing fancy, very traditional eggs benedict but it was executed the way you would expect it to. we were made aware that they had a $3 1/2 ceasar special, so how can we pass that up? it was very tasty.
as i was having my steak, i glanced at the table next to me, i couldn't not notice how great what she ordered looked, so i immediately asked what it was. she ordered the soup & salad ($9 1/2) thai chicken curry soup that had coconut milk and red peppers & the hollywood salad, organic greens, seasonal fruit, tomatoes, goat cheese, avacado, roasted red pepper, alder smoked bacon & ceasar vinaigrette, she also added a side steak for an additional $5 1/2.
they also have a four cheese macaroni ($7 1/2) mascaponi, brie, parmesan & bocconcini and the mini ukranian perogies ($10 1/2) potato & chedder perogies, caramelized onions & spicy chorizo with sour cream & chipotle sauce.
they have a special every day of the week like monday $3 1/2 rotating sleeves & $7 1/2 wings or saturday $18 1/2 cocktail pitchers & $13 1/2 bouillabaisse, something to keep in mind for when i gobackto try out their dinner menu.
all & all i had a very good experience and even though the place was busy, the service didn't suffer at all, i'd be more than willing to gobackagain
