this is a truly unique place, very true to the eccentric soul of memphis. theplaceis the definition of a dive bar, but they have what's considered one of the best burgers in the country! it's a very simple preparation. they don't have a dozen options and the burger is pretty basic. but it's cooked to the right consistency and is just delicious! they also have some live music, some billiards and a whole lot of character! definitely worth a visit if you're just visiting memphis!

it was a late friday afternoon so theplacewas near bare. two tables were occupied. we chose to sit at the bar.order up a soul burger and the coldest beer in town. drink your cold beer, drink the ambiance. relish your burger and listen to the jukebox play every one of you favorite songs .stroll upstairs and envisage. i don't know why but you just want to be there.

total dive, total gem. thisplaceis a total dive, but the soul burger is amazing. the upstairs is a little creepy, but stay downstairs and have some burgers and you'll be happy.

lunch review. i went to earnestine and hazels today for lunch, and it was so so. theplaceis definitely one of those places with "character" and has seen better days. the staff was friendly and food was ok. only thing available was the soul burger and a side of chips. i am sure if i was there at 2 am with theplacehoppin' it might have been different. all in all, if i was right there, i would grab a bite, but i would not drive to far out of my way to make a special trip for the meal.

all about the atmosphere. thisplaceis dark and (probably) dirty and it seems like the kind ofplacethat couldn't possibly pass a health inspection. that being said - it was packed and the atmosphere was great. i stopped here as part of the memphis ghost tour, otherwise i probably would have been too scared to venture into this (seemingly) seedy little joint. but let me just say this....theplacedoesn't disappoint. it's a memphis staple - full of history and crazy stories - and that's enough right there to make me go back.

(i should mention that i didn't eat here, i just had a drink.....but i sat at the bar and watched them cook for quite a while. those burgers were being served one right after the other, as quick as the cook could make them. that alone should tell you they're worth it. and the staff was incredibly friendly.)

maybe go at 2am not at 5pm. my husband and i were going downtown last night for kix on beale and decided to try a newplaceto eat rather than the usual kooky kanuck and heuy's we always go to. after looking on here and reading the reviews were intrigued by the history so decided to give it a try. we got there about 530-545 on a thursday night it was just us and the bartender/ cook. it was a little odd we had to ask him if we could order? the menus on the table were for shrimp creole a restaurant in the back of earnestine & hazel's that he said never opened?
the burgers came and it was okay nothing special to be honest it was no different than a fast food burger just had sauteed onions on it. my husband and i enjoyed the burger but will not be going back again it wasn't a memorial burger and sadly i wish we would have chosen someplace else to eat on our date night.

lots of nostalgic appeal, not much else. thisplacehas a rich history that is deeply interconnected with the city of memphis. you probably couldn't read any definitive history book on the city of memphis without also including e&h along with it. that being said, however, thisplaceis a seriously runned down dump.

sure, going upstairs and taking the tour is cool, "and this is where ray charles was almost found dead in his room with a heroin needle in his arm," or "we were once the biggest whore house in memphis," but beyond such not-so-flattering accolades, the bulk of what thisplacehas to offer comes down to it's "soul burger."

i won't lie, it's a good--but not great--burger. in a town dominated by bbq, burger options can feel scarce at times. so you might read reviews about huey's, the cooky canuck, or in this case e&h, but the gist is that this one burger is just a plain patty with some nostalgic history thrown in for a magical experience.

now you might find the aforementioned reason enough to go, you definitely should check thisplaceout at least once if you never have before, but if you're wondering if the burger is worth the trip, you're better off walking across the street to arcade or down the street to sob and spindini.

sweet digs. i was visiting from new orleans and happen to come across thisplaceon the 4th of july. this is one of the coolest if not the coolest bars i have ever been. the service was incredibly friendly and the burgers were simple but good. it was once upon a time a brothel and the upstairs has not changed. we had 6 beers and 2 burgers for 16 bucks. i recommend everyone to visit.
