love the "wild" options at dicks, from the elk to the boar, its quite nice to have that kind of variety...

my zizou was excellent...

i can't wait to try the dork burger (duck and pork) cause it soundsgreatand with a side of yam, that sounds like a winning combo.

reallygreatexperience at dick's kitchen. dining room is adorned with...well, pictures of famous dicks. van dyke, clark, etc. my cocktail was lacklustre, "dick's-a-rita", they tried too hard with the pineapple. the rest of the food, milkshakes and beer was high class greasy spoon stuff. the fries were great, the burgers were eaten by the kids before i could snap a shot. i had the salad with lime thai dressing and it was terrific.

we really liked this place and it will make it on our regular rotation.

i don't love dick's i don't hate it either, i just feel like there are so many better places to eat in portland. don't get me wrong, dick's has a pretty good selection, and they have agreatvariety of meats (buffalo anyone?), i just don't love the "vibe" in there, and i always end up sitting by a table of weirdos.  this visit was no exception to the rule. we ended up sitting next to two people who were clearly on a first date. the woman on the date was trying to convince the man that she had to travel with ziploc bags full of blood, and that it would be really hard for her to go to china because explaining her need to carry blood around would just be impossible. he kept asking her what was wrong with her that she would need to carry blood around, and she kept making up crazier and crazier responses. the guy definitely was a g

redemption after forgetful service. having read the reviews on both locations of dick's kitchen, i was curious what kind of experience we were going to have. it could go either way.

we met family here at the nw location on a saturday at 7pm for a nice evening dinner on the recommendation of my sister in-law who had lunch here two days before. parking is a challenge in this neighborhood but we got lucky. the restaurant was busy but not overly when we arrived and the wait for a table was understandable and not too long.

once seated, our server asked us for drink orders and when they were brought to the table one of the beers was incorrect. this turns out to be the foreshadowing for the rest of the service. the beer issue was made right and we were asked if we wanted water at the table, we said yes. two carafes of water were brought with the promise of glasses.

next, we placed our orders. i ordered the host burger, which was elk, the not-fries and a cup of the smokey tomato soup. the starter was delivered to my sister in-law but i had to ask for my soup. it arrived and by the time it cooled off enough to start in, the meals were arriving. we had to remind them about the glasses for the water and i received my not-fries but no meal. i ate me soup and when we were asked if everything was all right, i had to remind them that i was missing my meal.

"oh, what did you order?"

"well don't you write these things down?"

"i don't want to bring someone else's meal to you."

i told him i had ordered the host burger.

a few minutes later, after a round of comments about how interesting it was that this was happening to the one person sitting at the table that writes reviews, a young man, i assume the manager, came over and apologized. he said this was not the way they wanted the restaurant to be represented and offered to buy the table a round of drinks. we declined not wanting to drink that much more alcohol.

my elk host burger arrived and i was still finishing my soup. the manager asked how it was; i had not bitten into it yet but did, for him, and pronounced it "great."

everything was very good. the not-fries (baked) were indistinguishable for fried fries, my soup was nice and the elk burger lean, juicy and perfectly cooked. the vegetarian ruben wasgreataccording to the not-meat-eater at our table, and the other burgers were equally good. portions are modest and you will not likely take home leftovers. i was stuffed from the soup, not-fries, elk burger and a beer. service out of the kitchen was fine.

now addressing those who complain about the food being bland; compared to processed foods, fast food and chain restaurants i can see where your palette would find the food at dick's lacking in flavor. however, we cook for ourselves and eat little processed and fast foods. dick's does a wonderful job of bringing food to the table that emphasizes the ingredients, not the salt and seasoning.
when the bill came, my whole meal had been comped to make up for the forgetful service. we tipped well and i would return, and recommend dick's kitchen.

service was great, prompt and happy. the menu is fantastic as they offer good options for just about anyone, carnivore - vegetarian - paleo - vegan - gluten free... they use free range meats and locally sourced products, organics, and othergreatstuffs. the burgers were really good - and super messy. the "not fries" were super tasty. i wasn't fond of the cole-slaw. this place is owned by the founder of laughing planet.

dined with the family today (2 adults 2 kids). really wanted to like it based on the reviews. the food was good but portion size lacking. the atmosphere is nice but we got seated near some foul mouthed men, notgreatfor the kids to hear that language. our server was nice but the food took forever to arrive. and we wanted to order dessert but gave up on placing an order after another long wait. it wasn't terribly busy, so slow service seemed inappropriate. might try it again but today was a disappointment.

dork lover. their menu leans slightly towards the adventurous eater, but in a good way. i got the dork burger (ground duck & pork), which i think is a rotating special, and a side of bok choy. both tasted great.

they also have agreatdrink menu. i got some of the best gin & tonics i've ever had, but that may be due to the local gin selections more than their tonic water.
