the "non-fries" were pretty tasteless, i prefer the good old fashioned unhealthy ones. the burger, on the other hand, was amazing. it's one of the best i've had in portland. the bleu cheese was very flavorful and rich, the house-made potato bun was not dry, airy, or tasteless (as is the case at many places), the nueske's cured bacon was sweet and substantial, the patty was juicy and cooked just right, and the dressings were fresh. wow, what a delicious burger! yelpdick'skitchen website

really great experience atdick'skitchen. dining room is adorned with...well, pictures of famous dicks. van dyke, clark, etc. my cocktail was lacklustre, "dick's-a-rita", they tried too hard with the pineapple. the rest of the food, milkshakes and beer was high class greasy spoon stuff. the fries were great, the burgers were eaten by the kids before i could snap a shot. i had the salad with lime thai dressing and it was terrific.

we really liked this place and it will make it on our regular rotation.

i don't lovedick'si don't hate it either, i just feel like there are so many better places to eat in portland. don't get me wrong, dick'shas a pretty good selection, and they have a great variety of meats (buffalo anyone?), i just don't love the "vibe" in there, and i always end up sitting by a table of weirdos.  this visit was no exception to the rule. we ended up sitting next to two people who were clearly on a first date. the woman on the date was trying to convince the man that she had to travel with ziploc bags full of blood, and that it would be really hard for her to go to china because explaining her need to carry blood around would just be impossible. he kept asking her what was wrong with her that she would need to carry blood around, and she kept making up crazier and crazier responses. the guy definitely was a g

45 minute wait for cold food. i went todick'slooking to grab a healthy burger for takeout one saturday night. since it was a weekend night, i accepted the fact that i might be waiting 30+ minutes for my order and figured i would just grab a beer while waiting.

i ordered the bacon burger (a $10 mistake) and sidled up to the bar. the bartender never checked on me to see if i wanted anything while waiting and i had no luck getting his attention, so i gave up on the beer and watched the timbers game at the bar. after 45 minutes i noticed several others that ordered just after me had gotten their food. so, i went up to the front and caught the bartender as he was passing by and asked him to check on my order.

he came right back, gave me the bag and was gone. i checked the burger and of course, cold. not luke-warm, just cold. another 5 minutes went by trying to get someone's attention and i finally gave up. a $10 mistake i won't be making again.

redemption after forgetful service. having read the reviews on both locations ofdick'skitchen, i was curious what kind of experience we were going to have. it could go either way.

we met family here at the nw location on a saturday at 7pm for a nice evening dinner on the recommendation of my sister in-law who had lunch here two days before. parking is a challenge in this neighborhood but we got lucky. the restaurant was busy but not overly when we arrived and the wait for a table was understandable and not too long.

once seated, our server asked us for drink orders and when they were brought to the table one of the beers was incorrect. this turns out to be the foreshadowing for the rest of the service. the beer issue was made right and we were asked if we wanted water at the table, we said yes. two carafes of water were brought with the promise of glasses.

next, we placed our orders. i ordered the host burger, which was elk, the not-fries and a cup of the smokey tomato soup. the starter was delivered to my sister in-law but i had to ask for my soup. it arrived and by the time it cooled off enough to start in, the meals were arriving. we had to remind them about the glasses for the water and i received my not-fries but no meal. i ate me soup and when we were asked if everything was all right, i had to remind them that i was missing my meal.

"oh, what did you order?"

"well don't you write these things down?"

"i don't want to bring someone else's meal to you."

i told him i had ordered the host burger.

a few minutes later, after a round of comments about how interesting it was that this was happening to the one person sitting at the table that writes reviews, a young man, i assume the manager, came over and apologized. he said this was not the way they wanted the restaurant to be represented and offered to buy the table a round of drinks. we declined not wanting to drink that much more alcohol.

my elk host burger arrived and i was still finishing my soup. the manager asked how it was; i had not bitten into it yet but did, for him, and pronounced it "great."

everything was very good. the not-fries (baked) were indistinguishable for fried fries, my soup was nice and the elk burger lean, juicy and perfectly cooked. the vegetarian ruben was great according to the not-meat-eater at our table, and the other burgers were equally good. portions are modest and you will not likely take home leftovers. i was stuffed from the soup, not-fries, elk burger and a beer. service out of the kitchen was fine.

now addressing those who complain about the food being bland; compared to processed foods, fast food and chain restaurants i can see where your palette would find the food atdick'slacking in flavor. however, we cook for ourselves and eat little processed and fast foods.dick'sdoes a wonderful job of bringing food to the table that emphasizes the ingredients, not the salt and seasoning.
when the bill came, my whole meal had been comped to make up for the forgetful service. we tipped well and i would return, and recommenddick'skitchen.
