walked into deluxe and we were at once blown away by the decor and vibe. old adds, neon signs, leather booths and a good ol key lime pie in the cabinet took us straight back to the usa.
we ordered the chicken burger and one of the hotdogs with cheese. unfortunately the main events were not show stoppers. the burger was a good size and had adequate crunch, but lacked a good sloppy feel. more mayo or aoli would have been perfect. the hot dog was a huge dissapointment. the sausage was flavorless and small, the tomato sauce undercooked and grainy. worst bit was the slice of processed cheese melted on the top. it looks and tastes like plastic. i know it's an american diner but i wanted real nz cheese, not a kids lunch sandwich.
the saving grace of the meal were the sides. the tangy side salad, shoestring fries, curly fries and onion rings were absolutely moorish! paired with a very very creamy aoli and a thick beef gravy, i would be back for these deep fried gems alone.
a good try deluxe but just a little extra refinement will make you world famous in nz for sure!
