sublime food!. so i just spent $85 on a dinner at cutler & co, one of the most highly-regarded restaurants in melbourne. i rarely eat at such 'high class' establishments, but i felt the atmosphere here still quite casual, and more about fine food than snobbishness. i got just got an appetiser/entree, main and dessert instead of the $130 degustation menu, but it was definitely some of the best food i've ever had.
the appetiser was a 'wagyu bresaola & horseradish' which was basically thinly sliced layers of cured wagyu beef, like a carpaccio, lightly sprinkled with horseradish. the wagyu was quite salted, but of course very tender, fatty, and hearty. the horseradish left a faint but satisfying zing to the dish.
i should mention the crusty bread: brioche and sour-dough, with some kind of relish, which in itself was a delight.
the main was ironically a vegetarian dish: 'pine mushroom barigoule, globe artichoke, stracciatella du bufala & black rice'. i had to ask the waitress what 'barigoule' was, and i'm still not exactly sure, but as in the photo it consisted of pine mushrooms and artichoke sauted in butter in it's own consume, a very curdy lump of delicious buffalo's milk cheese (had the vague taste of hollandaise sauce actually), and a sort of black rice risotto in a separate pan cooked in a mushroom base. it was a revelation: the tastes, textures...the rice was a tad salty, but of perfect consistency, not too gluey but smooth but with a satisfying crunch. the mushrooms were of course tender, fresh, and perfectly cooked, and the sauce 'plate licking good'.
the dessert was a fitting finale. i chose the 'lemon granite, juniper, parsnip & almond cake.' before that came a 'pre-dessert' of lemon myrtle and olive oil yoghurt sorbet and rhubarb conserve, which was of course delicious. the dessert itself: wow, as usual, the chefs combine unusual flavours that come together in such a unique, exciting way, and they really work. one would not think a very eggy, rich almond cake, lemon granita, cake crumbs and icy sorbet and shaved ice granita topped with crunchy deep fried parsnip would go together well, but it really did! the rich cake, mild tang of the granita, and savoury of the parsnip was something else. the food is almost the epitome of what can be done withgreatingredients combined together creatively

the service was pretty attentive and friendly, without being over the top. the dishes came quite quickly, i was seldom left waiting for long. highly recommended!

cutler & co. unbelievable flavour combinations, such attention to detail in presentation. friendly staff although they are a little pretentious. but apparently not as bad as they where originally. fish was cooked perfectly and was very fresh. desert was like art but so many amazing tastes. we where unsure about the wines on the wine list and where given an amazing choice of wines, is up there as far as pricing goes but well worth it.greatfor that special occasion to impress that special some one.

wow, this place is just so good. this place wasgreatfrom the start and a few years on, it remains a fantastic place to eat. took some business folk in melbourne for a visit to c & co and the 4 of us simply loved it. oysters are always really lovely. pork and kimchi has become a fav. we had some flounder (my favourite fish, don't seen enough of it), some ridiculously good macaroni and a huge angus rib eye. happy days.

cutler & co in fitzroy is chef andrew mcconnell’s flagship restaurant.  despite having such a wealth of amazing restaurants and cafes around melbourne, there are some that immediately conjure that next level excitement.  vue de monde, attica, these are a regular feature in most foodie’s “top 10″ lists of melbourne restaurants and cutler & co deserves it’s place among this “must try” list. converted from an old metal works factory, cutler & co has a wonderful mix of rustic bare-brick walls and modern fixtures, the lights in particular are particularly impressive, offering angreatatmospheric illumination of the restaurant.  an open kitchen as you walk in also gives you the sense that these are chefs that want to impress and being able to sit and eat at the bar overlooking the prep-area gives you a unique insight into the world of a fine dining restaurant and agreatchance to chat to the friendly chefs while they go about their business.  the staff in a place like this could always topple off the fine line between professional and snobbish, but they were very friendly and attentive which added to the charm. please excuse the photo’s, all that was to hand was my mobile which didn’t take too kindly to the dark “atmospheric” conditions inside the restaurant.  hopefully i can return this year and do the food more justice. starting off the 6 course degustation was a clever amuse bouche, mixing creamy textures with tangy flavours.   the fromage blanc cigar consisting of a sweet pastry tube filled with cream, black olive tapenade and taramasalata.  agreattouch was this being presented to us in an authentic cigar box.  it’s the little things that matter and this was certainly a good indication of what was to come. cutler and co – amuse fromage blanc cigar the first main was cured snapper, eel brandade, dill oil & buttermilk.  such delicate flavours and yet so incredibly tasty at the same time.  the snapper and eel were a perfect combination, the eel subtle rather than a p

i had been recommended to try cutler and co by a relative, so i decided to book a table for my husbands birthday. i was expecting amazing for and a beautiful fine dining experience.
when we arrived we were taken to our table and our coats were taken. as soon as we were seated we asked if we'd like a drink without a drinks menu. which i thought was bizaar but over looked it. my husband and i decided not to go with menu selection as it didn't look very exciting. we ordered appetisers and the oysters were lovely, but the crab with cos was extremely salty.
entrees- broth and baked turnips were extremely disappointing. the turnips were totally overpowered by the bread sauce. bland.
for main meal we chose the smoked duck breast and john dory, both of the plates were nice but nothing exciting.
i'd have to say, my favourite part of the meal would have been their bread and beetroot purée.
the service wasgreatand the lady serving us was attentive.
but to the young lad behind the bar it was discusting to watch you skull back beverages left in the bottles which you were using to mix drinks.
over all we think there are far nicer restaurants in melbourne to experience fine dining.

disappointed. since it was our anniversary we thought we go to a special place for dinner and decided on cuttler & co. on arrival we were seated promptly and had a big table to ourselves. the waiting staffs were very helpful and informed. the sommelier knew his wine and recommended agreatbottle of shiraz. when it came to choosing dinner the recommendation was the suckling pig. a quarter of a pig, a dish to share, and at $220.00 not really cheap. but since it was a special night why not. they told us it would take about an hour to cook and almost to the minute it came out of the kitchen. it was presented to us on a big serving plate and after a few minutes it was served to us with all sides and salad.
that’s when the disappointment started. the pig was served on a plate with one little carrot and one little caramelised onion. the rest of the pig was on a side serving plate. no other vegetables. the side was macaroni and cheese in a large fry pan (you can do this at home for $ 2.00) and a serve of salad greens with way too much dressing. have to say the pig tasted good but the salad was average and the macaroni (which anyone can do) was on the average as well.
they offered to take the balance of our main meal as a take away so after we got home we found that they only put half the left over pig but all the macaroni in the container.
i also had a very good view of the bar and noticed that one waiter poured wine from one bottle to another. this bottle was then taken to a table and two glasses of wine poured. when he came back with the bottle there was a little bit left over and back it went into the first bottle. not something you expect to see in a “classy” restaurant. you never know what you get so it seems. i can only recommend you order a bottle.
if you wantgreatwaiting staff or a nice ambiance then by all means go there but if you wantgreatfood look somewhere else. plenty of restaurants to choose from in melbourne.

one of my favourites for a guaranteedgreatdining experience. i always try the chef’s selection as the menu offerings are always unique, interesting, fresh and tantalising to the taste. the wine recommendations are always good too and the service top notch. love the atmosphere that’s both romantic, private, intimate and cosy and one could spend a long time over the dining experience without realising the passing of time.

3.5 we came here a while ago and had the chef’s selection. attentive service andgreatsetting. however, the dishes were either a hit or a miss. the duck was a little too under-done, it was more on the medium rare -rare side resulting in rubbery jelly texture that was difficult to carve. would love to visit again to try the current chef”’s selection of dishes.

3.5. a lovely setting, and very attentive service. we had some nice appetisers and bread to start, then ordered the prawns and zucchini flowers for entree, suckling pig for main, and finished with the chocolate delice. everything was well executed and presented. taste-wise, all the flavours were nice, although for me, it did lack some of the wow-factor i was hoping for. overall, a very nice dinner andgreatwine recommendations from the sommelier.

amazing venue. staff are friendly and polite, and the restaurant provides agreatatmosphere for a date night. my bf surprised me with a dinner here, and it really was the perfect choice. we opted for the degustation menu, and it was delightful. lots of wonderful flavours and pairings of textures. plus he was happy that there was a lot of meat featured in courses, compared to others we have tried which have been heavily vegetarian. if you love fine dining, i highly recommend checking this place out.
