still agreatplace downtown. went with a large group - we have been there numerous times for special occasions. this last visit did not disappoint. the service and food remains top notch - the entire staff supporting our group was on their games and made the evening special. looking around, there was a wide variety of dishes chosen with many clean plates at the end - a very good sign. also, greatselection of wines and...they used the correct glassware! we will certainly be going again - try it and you will be a repeat customer for special events/occasions.

coasting on reputation?. we made reservations for a dinner on our honeymoon at the suggestion of a friend who had gone here a few years ago. what a mistake! when i made the reservation, they asked if it was a special occasion, and i explained it was our honeymoon, so it would be nice if we could have a corner (or even quiet) table. when we arrived, at five mins to 8, we were told the 7:30 reservations had not yet arrived, so we'd have to wait in the (overcrowded) bar. we finally managed to get drinks at the bar after 20 mins or so, we'd been sitting for another 10 mins when the hostess found us to take us to our table. however, they could not carry the bar tab to our table, so we had to find someone in the bar area to pay for the drinks...
once we paid, we followed the waitress to our table, which was up against a large pillar in the main aisle leading out of the kitchen. there were a lot of tables empty, including the corner table directly behind me. by this time, i just wanted to get seated and get drinks, so i did not ask about a better table (yes, my mistake). after about 10 mins, the waiter came up, looked at the table said "oh good, you have drinks already. i see you have the menus, everything it pretty clear, i'll be back for your order in a few mins", and walked away.
still trying to put a good face on the night, we decided to order. we settled on steaks. i got the filet with horseradish mashed potatoes, and my husband ordered the strip with asiago truffle oil fries.
once the food arrived, which took way too long (our drinks were gone and our water had been filled twice), and the disappointment continued. i have gotten better filets at longhorn. the meat was actually tough. i had to saw at it to cut it, and it was very chewy. my husband's steak was slightly better, but the fries were literally in a big cheesy clump, which were hardly edible.
the waiter came over finally to ask if we needed any more drinks, and my husband ordered a glass of wine. after 20 mins, and by which time we'd finished eating, the waiter came back to let us know he hadn't forgotten the wine, but they were out at the waiter station, so he had to go to the bar (which he had not done)...my husband cancelled the drink order and i asked for the check.
i wouldn't recommend this restaurant. i'm not sure how they got thegreatratings i've seen. the waitstaff looked like a bunch of high school kids and the majority of them spent the time we were there clustered in the corner in front of the door to the kitchen, looking around and talking to each other while the customers waited for them.

great food, service not as good as meal. we had a reallygreatdinner at 95 cordova.the new york strip steak was very good and so was the tender cut bistro steak. the creamed spinach, truffle fries and asparagus were also delicious. each dish was flavorful and a delight to eat. the apple blossom dessert was the perfect ending to agreatmeal. the dessert had creamy vanilla bean ice cream on top of a pastry filled with cooked sweet apples, and the entire thing was drizzled with sweet and sticky caramel. however, we did find it a bit odd that when we made the reservation we noted this was for a birthday celebration, and no one at the restaurant even mentioned it. additionally, our server acted pretty much disinterested during our entire meal. the food was spot on for this caliber of restaurant but the service was not.

i dined at 95 cordova for dinner last night and really enjoyed it. it was fun to dress up and enjoy the plush setting and live music. for a friday night at 8:00 it wasn't super busy, my partner and i both enjoyed our meals. even though we originally came in because the menu online had lamb, they had taken it off the menu due to inconsistent product. admirable to me! i enjoyed the tomato soup with a mixed green salad and also loved the chargrilled asparagus. my partner had the soup of the day (a jumbo) and the mushroom ravioli with rabbit that he raved over. it was agreatplace to have a special birthday dinner, we may go back if we want to fancy it up a bit.

romantic setting. we were there for a private party a few months ago. given the time elapsed since the meal (and the fact that the wine was flowing while we were there), i can say that i had agreatsalad and a really phenomenal steak...but that's it. wish i could remember more details, but i can say that it is worth your time if you want to get away from the touristy feeling so prevalent elsewhere in the city.

better food for cheaper. ok, i'm not really going along with the majority and i have to explain why. when i give reviews i do it on a price/goodness ratio. as the price climbs, the food also has to match. while the meal was pretty darn tasty, i think i've had better food for cheaper and i've certainly had better food at this price level. so the ambiance is great. picture this: you park on this quaint little side street (that happens to be part of the oldest city in the us) right next to a tree lined plaza. so you wrap your arm around your date and stroll over to the casa monica, wherein lies the 95 cordova restaurant. old spanish and middle eastern decor makes the place dark, warm and inviting. the restaurant itself is quite cozy. the candlelight level brightness makes it that much more romatic.greatsetting. service is smooth, but not 5 star polished. they are a little too friendly and a little to slow. the menus are unique in that they are backlit so you can read them. it's an extensive list of just about whatever you could want. mostly, it's heavy european with a dash of some middle eastern flaovrs.
my choice started with the caesar salad which let me down. i use the caesar as a measuring stick. this chef, i could tell, was into heaviness and creams. the romaine was barely crisp (though not soggy) and warm. i believe it should be super crisp and chilled. the dressing was overdone (like they took newman's own) and dumped it on. there was no hint of anchovies or any cheese but parmesean. not a fantastic start. for entrees i started with the sea bass and the ginger and black pepper sea scallops. the sea bass was done well. it was crisply grilled with a light amount of caramelization across the top. they let the fish hold it's own with only light amounts of salt as the major flavor. it was moist, soft and flaky, as a sea bass should be. it's easy to make, so i would have really been surprised had it not been cooked well. it was plated over something, mashed potatoes and asparagus, but it's mundaneness makes it not memorable to me. the scallops were excellent. they were of large size, perfectly cooked and seasoned well. they were served with a fried vegetable eggroll which had seaweed, carrots and cabbage in it. an interesting pairing. as an additional side also tried the mac n' cheese. this was extrememely heavy and rich, with a light flavoring of truffle oil. one of the better creamy pasta dishes i've had anywhere. so definately a thumbs up for locale and ambiance. i do have to take off for the price though, considering the service was only average and the food while pretty good, had some hits and misses. to consider, i've had sea bass that was just as, if not better for $12 or less at other palces. not sure i'd return if visiting again.

i like eating at 95. it isgreatto have a relaxing dinner experience in the touristy mecca of sa. i'm local, so it is annoying to be surrounded by white sock and sandal wearing tourists. i can put on some nice clothes, call some friends and head down by the casa monica and enjoy chef created cuisine instead of the usual fried local fare. plus it is right down the street from a bunch of nice art galleries. walk off dinner, look at some art and steal a kiss in the courtyard across the street. enjoy.
