this place is immediately eyecatching for anyone of a certain age and who possesses a certain level of discrimination and appreciation of the golden age of american dining. i suppose there are smarter and sharper restaurants out there, i know for damn sure there are worse. it's not particularly cheap but nor should it be. it has the freshest seafood i've encountered in years and this is definitely worth seeking out. it does what it does extremely well. a civilized pleasure, and thankfully not a magnet for the hipster crowd. loved it.

great places in europe

we flew to rome for about 4 days and then got on norwegian spirit cruise ship for 13 days. we went to naples, sorrento, athens, rhodes, israel (3 days), turkey, etc. great places to visit.

i've had much better seafood than this. i wanted to love this place. the staff is polite but everyone seems to speak very little english. most of our food was lacking in flavor. it seems very bland and tasted like food you would eat in a nursing home. very disappointed.

no. just no.. the decor is cheesy. really cheesy. it's like long john silvers trying to be papadeaux but can't even beat red lobster. ugly inside and out. it's dark too. i seem to remember they had carpet.... which is a no no for any restaurant from a cleaning standpoint.

the dishes have promise, but execution is needed. we had some sort of pasta which was bland and oily. boring salad. i think we had a drink from the bar and it wasn't great.

they recently renovated i think. whatever they spent that money on, they should have spent making the place livelier to speak to a younger, savvy audience. and their menu or cooking staff needs to revamp the dishes. 60%fine running and this place would be great.

but you can get a good meal here on occasion; maybe you'll have good luck.

the christie's restaurant in houston, last survivor of a once-thriving chain, embodies everything that made the old s.a. location so popular: a clean, large, traditional dining room, with cloth table coverings, a menu full of long-time favorite dishes, and a swarm of staff keeping each customer supplied with everything they expect in a good restaurant and each place unobtrusively cleared. it's nice, i think, that a restaurant doesn't cut staff in order to save a few bucks. the quality of service is well worth the relatively slight premium in prices. we chose this place mostly from a sense of nostalgia, and were rewarded with a pleasant m

surprising. serivice was excellent. sorry i've forgotten her name. charming girl of mexican descent armed with a quick smile and ready laugh.
was recomended the fried shrimp. it being what they're famous for. as well they shoulg be. stuff was to die for. can't say the same for the stuffed, because the basic model is so good the stuffing only detracts.
also, the dozen fresh oysters were wonderful. only made more so because they were on special.

salad was fresh crisp and the homemade dressings are great.
crawfish bisque is filled with crawfish in a thick creamy roux with a hint sherry.
fried shrimp are fair. fried scallops are wonderful.
service was exemplary!

just 'okay'. after reading all of these rave reviews, we decied to try it while we were in town it was okay - just okay. for the flavor, i thought it was over priced. i don't mind paying $$$ for a great meal, but not an 'okay' one.

the shrimp was large, but the breading was dough-y on the inside. we scraped if off. i was hoping to find that elusive sweet flavor some larger shrimo offers, but no.

the cole slaw had an unusual flavor. two of our party would not eat it, but i thought it was okay. there's that word again - 'okay'.

the rolls were just plain old white bread - boring. same with the house salad. the atmosphere? unremarkable.

i think if you've grown up with this restaurant, so there is an emotional appeal, then you would have a different opinion. we just wanted some great seafood!

on our next trip, we'll look for a restaurant that is better than 'okay'.

venerable seafood house noted for fried shrimp. i've had excellent fried shrimp in freeport (red snapper inn) and kemah (t-bone tom's) and galveston (shrimp 'n stuff), but nothing compares to christie's.

the standard in fried shrimp. christie's fried shrimp is the standard by which i measure all other's fried shrimp. that's what you go to christie's for - the plump fried shrimp and remoulade sauce. it's hard to try to veer off and try much of anything else when you've got the best! : )

i've been eating at christie's since i was a little girl - over 50 years. not much has changed, thank goodness! it's a no-nonsense kind of place with class - none of that promo stuff chains do. sad that there is only one location remaining, but soooo glad it is still here after so many years.

christie's is sentimental for my family and we still get there for family events, but we choose them for the shrimp and great service.

fried shrimp. the best fried shrimp in houston by far. it's always the same and always good. don't really care much for the rest of the food, but when i'm in the mood for fried shrimp, that's where i go.

nice people, ok food. they have a gluten free menu so that's a plus but there weren't really that many choices. they did let me change a few things to make something i could eat but some of the ingredients they used weren't available so it was extremely bland.

i know that you can bread shrimp with corn or other flours and if they did that then the gluten free people would probably go there often.

the restaurant seems stuck in the 70's and my husband called it the "denny's of seafood" which seems about right. they are very nice and polite about food allergies.
