buck & honey’s

let's start with the ambiance at buck and honey's. it's beautiful. both inside and out. indoors is modern, bright, wooden, airy. the restrooms are clean and smell fresh. the outdoor patio is filled w/flowers, plenty of tables with both gazebo and umbrella options for shade. it's a welcoming space.

as far as the service goes, it's a little more mixed. the hostess was friendly, seated us immediately, and brought us waters and menus. then we waited. we waited to the point when we were just about to get someone or leave, when the waiter finally came over. from that point on, he was back regularly to refill beverages and check on us and i have no complaints. but it was odd, after we had ordered, a waitress came by to take our order. it seems like there is some confusion about who is working which tables.

moving on to the food. salads, sandwiches, appetizers. fairly standard, but with some interesting twists which sounded good. for example bacon-wrapped curds. iorderedthe ta's hot comby which includes ham, salami and pepperoni, green pepper, onion, mozzarella and sauce on a toasted hoagie. it was tasty but the green pepper and onion would have been much better if they had been sauteed longer and allowed to caramelize. (they were hot but needed cooked more). also it was just dripping w/sauce. i think the sauce was a variation of italian dressing and it was tasty but way too much. they even included an extra side of sauce, so i'm guessing some people must really like it that way. my companion had the smoked salmon super wrap which he did enjoy. it included lots of veggies. we bothorderedthe sweet potato fries. overall, the portion sizes seemed a mite minuscule for the prices.

i'd go there if you are looking for great atmosphere, but i just wasn't wowed by the service or food.

loved it!. one random weeknight my husband and i decided to give buck & honey's a try and we are glad we did. my husbandorderedthe walleye and while i don't eat seafood he insisted i try a bite because they thought it was one of the best walleye he's ever had (and he pretty orders it every time he can!). i also thought it was quite good. i had the ribs with mashed potatoes and mac and cheese, all of which was delicious. i would definitely go back!

a disappointing dinner. we went to buck & honey's for dinner. it was busy but not over crowded. we waited briefly at the bar for a table and that was quite pleasant. once we were seated, however, the disappointment began.

it was a full ten minutes before we were served water and informed that we would have a different server because the first one was over-seated.

weorderedthe two main dishes each with two sides. my dining partner requested the grilled mixed vegetables. i alsoorderedthe crab cakes.

the "grilled mixed vegetables" were not. it was instead boild corn. when we asked our server about this she informed us that this is a common practice and there are rarely grilled mixed veg as the menu says.

the crab cakes i oredered were tatsey but miniscule. for $10 i received four very small crab cakes that were burnt on the bottom. i would estimate the size of each one as smaller than a standard marshmallow but similarly shaped.

i cannot say that i will return but the atmosphere and building are lovely.

high quality pub. this is a fantastic place to relax, unwind, have a few and watch the game. it's unpretentious but trendy. everything screams quality without sacrificing that 'at home' feeling. there are many flat-screens to watch the game in the bar, and tons of seating out in the dining room.

and the food? quality. they say it's local, we don't really know, but it's high-quality twists on pub-favourites without getting into fine dining.

we came here after work andorderedsome of the dynamo nachos: freshly made corn chips, great cheese (yes this is wisconsin and them might be fighting words), delicious chicken, gucamole, and salsa. what a delight!

as for the mains? i had the italian sausage pasta, which was just a fantastic portion size, great spicy sausage and a rich tomato basil sauce. i have it on the best authority that spanky's meatloaf (yes you read that right) is absolutely fantastic, and the entree salads have more fresh protein (eggs / chicken / bacon etc) than most restaurants in madison.

it's a bit out of the way in sun prairie, but completely worth the drive. we'll be going there again!
