ok. firstly this space is beautiful. lots of space and not too busy even on a friday night. came here with coworkers and we started with cocktails and calamari. the cocktails were all great. our server was attentive and also very good.
the calamari was a bit weird. all the pieces are the same ball shape more like a scallop and coated in a batter. the batter was a bit on the doughy side. the calamari came with a fennel slaw and was mixed in with the slaw. maybe that is why it lost the crisp texture i am familiar with some calamari having. the slaw calamari ball mixture was then drizzled with a fair bit of some type of mayonnaise sauce. i had a few bites, just enough to try. but i'd never order it here again.
i ordered fish tacos for my main. i had the option of ordering fries, soup, salad, or broccoli with my dish. i ordered the broccoli (this cost and extra $3.00 by the way, which is not stated on themenunor did my waitress tell me). themenudoes not state that the dish comes with fries. i understand that sometimes it costs extra for a substitution. but this was not presented as such. the server said i had a choice, not a choice of substitution.
when the dish came out visually it was really appealing. fresh pico de gallo on top, lettuce, and what appeared to be a crispy taco shell. the fish was battered and deep fried. i should've asked. i was hoping for a bit of a fresher style fish taco, but that was my fault for assuming. the first bite was great. there was a bit of a spice and some hint of dill. the fish was tasty but as i continued to eat it became apparent that it was greasy and really almost a fish and chips style fish and batter. the batter was thick and heavy and really took away from the fish. what i first recognized as a dill flavour i soon realized was tarter sauce and the crispy taco was actually only crispy on part of the shell. it was about 75% dry flour tortilla and 25% crispy shell as if it had been broiled and only the top of the shell around the rim had gotten baked. i barely ate my second taco (the dish comes with two) because after i got through the pico de gallo on top it really was like a piece of deep fried fish and chip batter with tartar sauce in a half baked flour tortilla. i did not like this dish very much at all and would not order it here again.
for nearly $40 total for a few pieces of terrible calamari, broccoli, deep fried fish with tartar sauce in an old dry shell, and one cocktail, i could definitely do better.
again, the server, the drinks, and the space were very good. not sure i'd order food here again though.
