for our second wedding anniversary, my wife and i aren’t getting each other presents. instead, we’re channeling our resources into a series of “fancy” dinners in bothyountvilleand los angeles. as “mildly” obsessed fans of thomas keller’s ad hoc, we thou

an absolute cracker. this was our first dinner inyountvilleso expectations were high, and were certainly met in this french bistro. right from the get go the bread that resembled a wheat husk was delicious right through to the stunning pear and ice cream dessert. each dish was executed with a deft hand and never disappointed. do yourself a favour and try bouchon.

two words - truffle fries!. making our booking from australia three months in advance, i worried had i made the right choice considering there are more michelin stars per square metre inyountvillethan anywhere else in the world.

i feared for naught. this restaurant was exceptional, and so reasonably priced i can't believe the calibre of the food and service. we went on a tuesday evening just after new years and even then the place was packed. we had to wait a while for our table, and we given a glass of complimentary champagne to sip while we waited.

the rabbit terraine we shared for entree was beyond amazing. succulent pieces of rabbit served in it's own jar with prune puree. when we ran out of toast, before we could ask for more a waiter was at my elbow with another serving to finish it off. the steak and lamb were cooked to perfection and every morsel was savoured.

the thing that really wowed me though were the truffle fries. i don't think i've ever eaten anything as amazing in my life. who doesn't love deep fried potato, but add a liberal dusting of black truffle and you have pure heaven. i love how the establishment isn't to high and mighty to provide such a simple joy too the diner.

i'll just tell you up front. bouchon was probably one of my favourite dinners ever. after a long 54km (and 6 hour bike ride) around some wineries in napa valley, we drove back toyountvilleto go to bouchon. luckily at about 8pm we were able to get a table for 9 outside without any reservation. it took a while for them to set up the table. though outside, we weren't bitten by mosquitoes, and we were surrounded by heaters. this was one of the dinners i was looking forward to on this trip. to start i ordered the salad de cresson et d'endives which is watercress and endive salad with roquefort cheeese, and walnuts with a walnut vinaigrette. i didn't enjoy this salad that much. i much preferred the salads at incanto and buckeye roadhouse. for me i think the roquefort was a bit too pungent for my liking, and i'm still not used to blue cheese, though i try to order it and get a taste for it when i see it around. i did enjoy the light dressing and the walnuts. for my main i ordered the

ahhhh, let's be honest. bouchon is a little slice of thomas keller heaven, isn't it? i mean, could the place be any cuter? a little parisian bistro in the middle of idyllicyountvillewith a festive, welcoming atmosphere, none of the snootiness of the fr
