first this is a serve yourself kinda place with the emphasis on bar style. so i have no complaints about the service. time you wait for food is a little ridiculous we waited 1 hour and 11 mins for two pizzas. thier redsaucewas good nice sweet flavor but way too much of it on the pizza. way past a classic pizza margarite. crust dough was good, but too thick. that explains why one of our pizzas was clearly burnt. toppings were a nice quality. the cheese was definitely not a whole milk mozella, dry and kinda tasteless is how i would describe it.
overall a bad experience and i will not return or recommend this place. try antinino's or dewys first.

not really sure what the deal is here, but the pizza sucks. it's a lot of dough with asaucethat's not quite right and a little cheese. when i pull my slice off my pie, i want it to look like a harp (strings of cheese). this place is great for drinking and...

we tried black thorn because of a recommendation and we like trying new places, especially within the city.  all four of us were very disappointed in the "chicago style" pizza.  i love pizza - any pizza, thin crust, new york style, cicago style, even frozen pizza.  this was the worst pizza i've ever had.  it was not even close to a chicago pizza and the spices in the (brown)sauceoverpowered the taste of everything.  the pub, itself, was fun and i loved the neighborhood feel of it but will not be back to eat.

should have ordered extra sauce...and cheese... and toppings. sausage was good, but there was hardly any.sauceis very seasoned, which i normally like, but too much crust, not enough toppings.

user reviews. i do not like the over abundance of italian type (probably oregano) seasoning in the pizzasauce- it is overpowering! the cleanliness (not) and darkness is what makes this place unique and that part does not bother me as much as i want to like the pizza, thesauceis just overseasoned!

not #1 but it's up there.. we liked the pizza, music and atmosphere. we were there on a week night and it wasn't busy. thesaucehas quite a lot of black pepper and herbs in it, which was surprising but pretty good. they use styrofoam plates and plastic utensils and cups. you seat yourself, then go up to the bar and order. strictly comparing pizza, we still prefer dewey's, though i like the dive bar feel of black thorn better, so it'll be hard to decide where to take our out-of-town friends next time we have a group to entertain.

disappointed in yet another "chicago style" pizza place in st. louis. their sample was a huge pretty thick pizza with nosauceat all. hello all pizza makers. chicago pizza like gino's has at least 1 inch ofsauceon top of the pizza. every place here that advertises chicago pizza all serve a giant thick breadstick. cheese and dough do not make it pizza. sauce, sauce, and more sauce!!!!!!

first visit. on the recomendation of an old friend i finally tried this dive (with affection). lets clear up a few things. theres no smoking. yes you can breath and enjoy the aroma of a truly enjoyable deep dish feast. kids, though welcome, should be watced closely lest they run into an unexpecting server carry a hot pie. our feast came with everything but ye ol sink. awsomesauceon this signature dish. just enough bite to push the red pepper flakes to the end of the table. i found the staff friendly and not without a sense of humor. if you know what you want on your pie call ahead and save wait time. if you have a special topping that the thorn dosn't carry..bring it and they will be happy to add it to your pie. i'll be back!!!

that was good pizza!. have to say i wasn't overly fond of the decor (guess i'm not a "neighborhood dive" kinda person, having outgrown that about 30 years ago) but the pizza was awesome! i called in and ordered it then went to pick it up. was a bit surprised by the hour wait time, but since i wasn't in a huge hurry i just sat at the bar and had a mixed drink while i waited. the crust, spicysauceand all that cheese, along with the still slightly crispy veggies really hit the spot! if you want good pizza this is a great place to get it. if you aren't into the bar scene like me, order it for takeout. either way, you won't be disappointed in the pizza.

amazing pizza- just get it to-go!. my favorite pizza ever! thesauceis so spicy and different. there's a looong wait for to go orders, but it's worth every minute... just don't look around too much when going inside to pick it up!

the post dispatch has their heads up their butts. they love writing about the trendy spots and rarely tell you how it really is. black thorn is okay. it's a nice change. by no means does it taste like a chicago pie. it's a good crust. thesauceis over seasoned but it has a nice spicy flavor. the toppings is where they fall short. they tasted frozen. i would rate it a 6 out of 10. the atmosphere is fun so that helps. it's a bar so don't start whining because you have to serve yourself. balducci's in maryland heights still has the best chicago pie around.

i don't get it either. i have tried this place several times, mostly because i have friends that rave about their food. in my opinion, this is quite possibly the worst pizzasaucei have ever sampled. it tastes like a can of store-bought that they add a jar of 'italian seasoning' to.

the minimal seating is wicked uncomfortable, it's filthy, the bathroom is awful and they have the rudest bartenders in town. it's almost like the bartenders are trying to be jerks--adds to the ambiance? who knows.

if it weren't for the nice shuffleboard table this place would be a total waste of real estate.

is what it is. ok, yeah, if i were the owner i think i'd put more time into cleaning the place. i don't know what their problem is with that but, that said, i don't normally hang out there. i call ahead for their chicago style any & all 14" pizza that takes a full hour to cook and then pick it up to go. i've shared it with everyone i know and they all have raved about it. the two things to remember are that it takes a long time for them to cook the pizzas and thesaucetastes extremely different depending on the type pizza you order. while the samesauceis used on all their pizzas, it tastes much stronger on their regular pizza than it does on their chicago style (stuffed) pizza. having had the different types, i once told them i found it amazing that they could have both the best and the worst pizzas coming out of the same oven.

awesome pizza!. this place is a total dive, but the pizza is fantastic! theirsauceis spicy and they use a lot of cheese.

of course they have the new york and st. louis styles, but the chicago is my fav!
