i love this place...i just want to comment that people should stop bitching about the wait...you obviously dont know that it indeed does take an hour to bake a deep dish pizza..lets use our brains...

conservative suburbanites beware!. this is not chuck e. cheese! it's a bar first, pizza place second. don't come here with your kids and expect to be treated like you're at a strip mall pizza parlor in the county. the beer is cold; the pizza is hot and spicy and delicious. and yeah it takes awhile but that's what the bar is for. hang out, drink up and freakin' relax. and if a colorful clientele with colorful language isn't your thing, this isn't your place. it's ours, though and we like it like that.

worth the wait!. amazing deep dish pizza! do not be pushed away by the wait time... trust me, it is worth the wait! you run the chance of having to stand for a while before you can get a seat, but as long as you are watching for anyone else leaving their table, you have a chance of being able to sit down by the time your food comes. this is a great gem that not many people know about, i believe you only know about it if you've heard about it from someone else. word of mouth and a great reputation is what keeps this place so wonderful.

essential dive bar. there's no service because it is a dive bar. that is to be expected from such a place. the grimy bathrooms and dimly lit environment are all a part of the fan fare. the pizza, however, is not from this world. it brings deep dish to a whole new level of deepness. for how small the pieces were they packed a cheesy, peppery punch.

horrible service. we make it over to blackthorn from time to time, but this last time was the worst wait and service ever! the place was packed, but that's no excuse for the restaurant being understaffed and the little staff that was working being rude. this place apparently gets a lot of business, especially on the weekends, so you'd think they'd hire some decent staff and buy another pizza oven and sound system with that money... apparently not. we ordered our pizza and were told there'd be an hour wait, so we bought a round of drinks and waited patiently, having to stand because there was no seating. eventually a spot opened at the bar, so we sat there for the next 45 minutes, waiting for our name to be called. one of the cooks was calling the names on the orders, and we could barely understand him (given his mumbly voice and their pathetic sound system). so we sat patiently, ordered another couple drinks from the pulseless bartender, listened for our name to be called... but still our name wasn't called for our pizza at an hour 15 minutes. so we approached the cook who had been calling out the orders, and come to find out, our name had been called 15 minutes prior and our pizza was sitting and getting cold. the cook even claimed one of the workers walked around the place calling our name, but we knew this was a lie. we were sitting right at the bar, close to the speakers, and we even saw that worker walk by a few times... not once did he say our name or announce that our pizza was ready. when we told the cook this, he didn't care, and he just proceeded with having the bartender collect our tab. talk about horrible service. stay clear!!!

not worth the loooong wait.. be prepared to sit and wait. and wait. and wait. they make one pizza at a time, very slowly. meanwhile, you have to sit in a dingy dive bar, without a waiter/waitress to take orders. we ordered two pizzas, and after over 2 hours, they had just finished making one, and had dropped the other uncooked one on the floor. the one pizza was ok, but basically anything would have tasted good at that point. certainly not worth the wait!

call ahead to lower wait time. fantastic deep dish pizza -- this has become a must visit for me when i'm in st. louis. a small tip for those who complain about long serve times: call in your order ahead of time. we have done this thanks to a local friend's recommendation to lower our wait time and have been very pleased with the service and pizza.

first this is a serve yourself kinda place with the emphasis on bar style. so i have no complaints about the service. time you wait for food is a little ridiculous we waited 1 hour and 11 mins for two pizzas. thier red sauce was good nice sweet flavor but way too much of it on the pizza. way past a classic pizza margarite. crust dough was good, but too thick. that explains why one of our pizzas was clearly burnt. toppings were a nice quality. the cheese was definitely not a whole milk mozella, dry and kinda tasteless is how i would describe it.
overall a bad experience and i will not return or recommend this place. try antinino's or dewys first.

even though i prefer nyc and stl style pizza to deep dish, i decided to try this place. the deep dish was pretty good, and they don’t skimp on the toppings, with that said i have definitely had better deep dish in chicago.

i love blackthorn! it may take a while to get your pizza, but the wait is worth it! tons of cheese, peppery sauce, and great toppings make this one of my st. louis pizza favs. i've been going here for years, and love it every time!

not really sure what the deal is here, but the pizza sucks. it's a lot of dough with a sauce that's not quite right and a little cheese. when i pull my slice off my pie, i want it to look like a harp (strings of cheese). this place is great for drinking and...

we tried black thorn because of a recommendation and we like trying new places, especially within the city.  all four of us were very disappointed in the "chicago style" pizza.  i love pizza - any pizza, thin crust, new york style, cicago style, even frozen pizza.  this was the worst pizza i've ever had.  it was not even close to a chicago pizza and the spices in the (brown) sauce overpowered the taste of everything.  the pub, itself, was fun and i loved the neighborhood feel of it but will not be back to eat.

holy jumpin! why didn't anyone tell me about this place before?!?! you're probably wanting to know how the pizza was? words can't describe the cheesy and saucy flavors that sang glorious songs with every bite. i'm pretty sure the chicago style pizza contains ingredients that were used at some point in time to base a religion off of. i just snuck out of bed and had a leftover slice... the wife wanted that slice.... that's how good this pie is. garlic cheese bread? amazing. just replace "pizza" at the start of this review with "garlic cheese bread" and you have another story to tell your grandchildren years down the road.

black thorn... your pizza men should enlist in the military, because i'm pretty sure the could single handedly defeat isis/isil/al qaeda with one swift shot from those dough making hands.

you have to be willing to put in a little time to enjoy one of these legendary pies. these pizzas take at least an hour to make, even with a relatively empty restaurant on a snowy, sunday night. however, good things come to those who wait. you have the option of thin or deep dish pizza but i opted for the thick crust that i had heard so much about. these pizzas are filled with layer upon layer of cheesy goodness and appear to be topped with a minimal about of a perfectly seasoned sauce. one piece was more than enough to fill me up and one, 12 inch pizza was plenty for four adults. next time i have a few hours to spare, i will definitely be back.

should have ordered extra sauce...and cheese... and toppings. sausage was good, but there was hardly any. sauce is very seasoned, which i normally like, but too much crust, not enough toppings.
