since it was still early in the day, they were serving brunch, and i was disappointed because their fabulous soba noodle salad (“grilled chilli glazed prawns on soba noodle salad with lime and miso dressing”) wasn’t on the menu. i had dreamed of this salad the night before (literally – i dreamed about salad…) and was disappointed, but asked the server, and he said he would check – and yippee, they could make it up for me!

love it. i've been here a few times now and have never been disappointed. you may need a reservation as it is a smaller restaurant and busy in the later evening hours. parking is a bit hit and miss as there is only a very small area to park for the two restaurants, but you can park on the west side of edmonton trail. east side seems to be by permit only.
anyway, back to the restaurant. we've had the same server twice, and shame on me for not getting his name. he is very nice man who makes great recommendations and is always in his happy place. the food itself is amazing. the oysters change regularly and i enjoy trying the different kinds. the menu is small; however, everything i have tried is very good so no worries there.

awkward service is how i would sum up my recent experience at big fish. i felt the awkwardness when i entered the restaurant.. really did not enjoy the vibe in there at all. as for food...decent. our appys were really good-frog legs, small fresh oysters and muscles. the mains were disappointing - paella & the salmon on wild mushroom risotto. our server was just sooo awkward. older lady with dark hair; not helpful, not friendly and she scolded my friend when she put the wrong plate in front of her. never going back

where in landlocked calgary, can you find good seafood? big fish! this would be the second time i’ve visited, and it won’t be the last. if you like oysters on the half shell, mondays are two for one. we made a raid on them. their fish dishes were perfectly cooked, and full of flavor. we also had dessert. the maple bourbon pecan pie with praline vanilla bean mousse and caramel was sooo good! holiday monday, we practically had the restaurant all to ourselves. we had a diverse group (including a gluten free diner) and our server was very patient with offering menu suggestions. will return to sample more of the menu.

wow their brunch is amazing! i came to try their saturday brunch and to cross this place off my wishlist. i made reservations and was glad i did because the place was packed! the atmosphere was very nice and lively. we were seated immediately and ordered our drinks. i decided to go with the mushroom, truffle, basil and white cheddar scramble on noble duck confit hash and was extremely happy with my choice. the food came very quickly and they were very good with keeping our coffee topped up. the scramble was amazing! i had a huge craving for truffles and was pleasantly surprised to see a large portion of truffle paste smeared on top of the scramble. the entire dish was so well thought out with each component complimenting each other. they also used a variety of mushrooms like porcinis instead of the standard creminis. their house made apple and lavender jam was heavenly. full of apple flavor with subtle hints of lavender and not cloyingly sweet. i'd be willing to purchase a jar if they sold them! this is by far the best brunch i've had in calgary and i will most definitely be returning to try their lunch and dinner menu!

birthday dinner. my partner and i recently stopped by this restaurant for a birthday recently after looking for some great seafood in calgary and coming across the reviews on here. it was a bit of a drive for us to get to, but well worth the time. despite the small size of the dining room, the atmosphere was comfortable and didn't feel too cramped, even with a party of 10 next to us. while i can't comment on their famous oysters (since neither of us are oyster fans), we ordered the crab cakes, chicken and lobster curry, and salmon on crab risotto. the flavor combinations were unique, delving away from traditional cuts of fish and into something truly delicious. their cocktails, too, were inventive and delicious. to top it off, service was top notch, not only during the meal, but when we were ready to leave as well. (in my opinion, nothing is worse than having great service and then being trapped without the bill when you're ready to leave.) easily one of our new favorite restaurants in calgary.

oysters to die for!. my fiancé and i dined in for dinner on a monday night and they happened to have a 2 for 1 deal on oysters. as avid (fresh) oyster fans, we ordered a dozen of their east coast and a dozen west coast oysters. they came out with lemon wedges, which is how i like them and the oysters were so fresh and every oyster burst with flavor in my mouth! the oysters also came with sauce cruets (which were obviously used by everyone ordering the oyster platters like ketchup tubes), instead of the individually sauces that usually come in little dishes with the oysters which was fine considering the freshness and value of the oysters. the place was very busy and they were short staffed but at least we got an explanation as to why they were. the waitress explained that the restaurant next door which was also owned by the same owner were even more short staffed than they were so they had to borrow one of their staff.
i also ordered the fish tacos which came with an exquisite mango salsa, again bursting with flavor. my fiancé had the steak and lobster dish which i also tried. overall, the food was delicious, the service could have been quicker but the waitress was very polite and friendly. having relocated to calgary from a place with bountiful seafood, i definitely miss fresh, quality seafood and have been on a quest to find a quality seafood restaurant in calgary. we will definitely be coming back!

always a good meal if you enjoy seafood and equally good service. someone once told me that they woul never eat seafood in a landlocked place like alberta - but i say to them you are missing out. a little pricey but when you know the food is well prepared and delicious, i say it's worth the money. nice spot for couples.

the service was great, and i highly recommend enjoying a caesar cocktail and some seafood at big fish. they do a weekend brunch and do accept reservations, so call this seafood restaurant today!
