beauty's is one of the restaurants that represent the soul and history of montreal's culinary culture, it's often mentioned along the likes of schwartz, wilensky and st-viateur. what sets it apart are its brunches, it's said to be the birth place of brunch in montreal. some even went so far as saying one hasn't really visitedmontrealwithout a visit to beauty's. but for some reason, i haven't visited it yet until last sunday, as a long time montrealers, i felt a bit guilty about it.

like many of the old culinary institutions, the exterior of beautiy's is quite modest, almost looks like a giant metal box, but it's interior is filled with history and glory, on the walls of its small corridor were a large collection of post of its press exposures.

inside the restaurant are rows of old fashioned booths with soft benches, and a long bar along its kitchen where you can see your brunches being made in front of your eyes. various pictures of the owners and its vip guests dotted the walls.

it's obvious that beauty's is a family run restaurant with most of its staff being the offsprings of its original owner, mr. beauty's. although mr. beauty's already passed the baton to his children, he still comes to the restaurant himself as if to make sure the new generation is running the restaurant strictly in the high standards he has set for decades and customers are satisfied. so from the moment i walked through the door i could tell all the staff are quite hospital and polite, and they all go out of the way to make you feel at home. even mr. beauty's himself would occasionally came to the door way to greet the line and he would ask the waitresses to refill coffee or water when he saw a customer's cups were emptied. this strike me as a stark contrast with some other established restaurants such as the schewartzs' where the staff is bit ignorant and even arrogant.

alright, let's get down to talk about its food. the restaurant is positioned as a luncheonette meaning they only open for breakfast and lunch. so they have a quite comprehensive brunch menu that include everything you could think of for a typical breakfast or lunch, top on the list of course are their famed brunches and omelettes, in addition, you'll find everything from soup, salad to burger, crepe and waffle etc,

since it's my first visit, i tried to stick to the classics. for brunches, they have beauty's basic, super beauty 2 and beauty's special. the first 2 are very typical brunches with eggs, fries, bagel, one or multiple of breakfast meats such as bacon, ham, salami. i was told beautify's special is their signature dish. so of cause, i went for it. another dish i have wanted to try is their trade-mark omelette called mish-mash.

the beauty's special is essentially a giant bagel sandwich. with slices of tomatoes, red onion, smoked salmon and creme cheese layered perfectly between two wood-fire baked bagel buns. i was wowed by it immediately after the very first bite. every ingredient in the sandwitch is so fresh you can literally smell it, the tomato was succulent, the red onion was crispy with a hint of spiciness, the salmon filet was as fresh as sashimi with a light smokiness , the cream cheese was not too salty and serves as a perfect spread for the bagel buns, but the real star of the sandwich was the bagel itself, it was crunchy, tasty with just the right amount of firmness and a very pleasant wood-fire aroma. it was just perfect for me. some say that the bagel was from st-viatur, so i'm not sure who should get the credit.

the mish-mash omelet was good too, but not perfect. the home fries are actually pan seared thin potato slices, i would like it better had it been cooked like hash brown, the omelet was well fried and tasted good, but the hot dog wasn't of the best quality, in addition it would mix better with the eggs had it been minced rather than sliced. and i didn't see any trace of salami and grilled onion in it which were mentioned on the menu.

over all i was very impressed with their food and service, will for sure visit again to try some other classic dishes and their smoothies which seem to be quite popular too. beauty's lives up to its reputation.

beautys is one of thosemontrealclassics that has stood the test of time in the plateau. this diner has sat on the corner of st urbain and mont-royal since 1942. in the heart of montreal’s jewish garment district, hymie and freda sckolnick started serving food to the workers of nearby factories. this busy lunch counter served the fastest and best diner fare in the city.

by nancy october 25, 2015 breakfast / brunch, canada, canadian, food, location, montreal, travel no comments. beautys lucheonettemontrealis one of those iconic restaurants that screams “montreal”. located in the plateau mont royal district, beauty has been around since 1942. it was opened by newlyweds hymie and freda sckolnick. the name beautys was actually hymie’s bowling nickname. it remains a family business to this day. for you – just know the beautys special (smoked salmon, cream cheese, red onions and tomato on a toasted sesame seed st-viateur bagel). add this to your “what to eat in montreal” gluttony tour list.

this place has been around since forever. home of the mishmash omelet. 60's diner type place. extra friendly service. the menu proposes typical montréal brunch items (bagel & lox, etc.) but when the food arrives it's rather average for the price.

“how many? three? ok. hold on. won’t be long.” it’s 2014, but could well have been 1942. mr. sckolnick, with a few extra grey hairs, still reigns over the room. the room, divided between old-school blue banquettes and white counter tops, seems to have been frozen in time. what started over a decade ago as a humble lunch counter in a stationary shop now stands as one of montreal’s food institutions. rumor has it that back in the days, regulars craved beauty’s lunches so much that they’d come have it as a late breakfast on the lord’s day. sounds like a familiar ritual? yup – apparently, that’s howmontrealbrunch was born. the food here inspires all the comfort you’d expect from a neighborhood diner. what you read on the menu is what you get. d’s santorini omelet was described as a mix of feta cheese, grilled red peppers, spinach and red onion. it came exactly as it was described, on a white plate, as if straight from ms sckolnick’s cooking pan. it’s the little twists that make beauty’s

4.5/5 for beautys. beautys is another of this city's legendary landmarks. it opened in 1942 in le plateau-mont-royal and is usually lined up out the door for breakfast. in fact, they only serve breakfast, brunch and lunch. i was instructed to try beautys when i watched anthony bourdain's the layover. luckily on the saturday morning when we visited the wait to get in wasn't very long, although the place was completely packed. the restaurant was opened by hymie and freda sckolnick, and hymie, now over ninety years old, is still greeting and seating the customers as they enter the door. the room is pure vintage diner, with a long counter dotted with stools and royal blue booths - it couldn't possibly look more authentic.

we got seated at a small booth for two and looked over the menu which consists mainly of breakfast foods like pancakes and omelets, and also several jewish classics like blintzes and latkes. our server took our drink order and i was very excited about the jus d'orange pur ($4.00), fresh squeezed orange juice. how often do you get to have a glass of real orange juice squeezed straight from actual oranges? it was a fresh and delicious treat that tasted like biting into the actual fruit. they actually sell the juice to take home as well.

to eat i went straight to the beautys special (cream cheese, smoked salmon, tomato & onion on a bagel - $11.00)! what arrived was clearly a thing of beauty - no pun intended. this was one of the original dishes and i could see why it has stood the test of time. first of all, a classic and perfectmontrealbagel which they get from st-viateur bagel. heaping amounts of cream cheese, which tastes homemade compared to the philadelphia brand that you're used to. and deliciously fresh smoked salmon, ripe tomato and purple onion. there is no way that this could possibly be wrong, and if it is i wouldn't want to be right. the sandwich is a little bit challenging to eat, but my course of action was to take huge bites and to create a little bit of a mess. classic flavours are at their best in this simple, perfect plate. this is the ideal breakfast if you are looking for something other than eggs and breakfast meats.

plain and simple, beautys is beautiful and it's worth going to experience a bit ofmontrealhistory.

the corner of mont-royal and st. urbain is the setting for beauty's restaurant, themontrealbreakfast institution that has been in business for over five decades. classic diner fare is served amid electric-blue booths, 50's style posters and an all-around retro interior. known for their famously long line-ups (often out the door) and their equally famous "mish-mash" omelette, this is the place to satiate even the most unyielding of sunday-morning diner cravings. we always opt for their beauty's bonjour , amontrealbagel with fried egg, melted cheese and delicious bacon, or their beauty's basic , which comes with eggs, bacon or sausage, a bagel, and home fries. their french toast is also simple, classic and super tasty (though you'll be charged extra for some pure maple syrup). top it off with a smoothie (classico, beauty's bleu, mango magic, beauty's rouge or my personal favourite, cookies & creme) and you have yourself the perfect recipe for one quality afternoon nap. least i forget
