the food wasn’t the best it did not taste fresh, my burger was very meaty. the milkshake was very good. we waited for this... the ambience was diner like and i would not go back.

there is nothing special about this place, nothing authentic. less than average breakfast in terms of taste. as for the service, the waitress was rushing and very disorganized! this wasn’t a good experience. don’t wait in line to try it...it is not worth it. i would not try it again with or without a lineup.

you are not a montrealer if you have not sampled beauty's breakfasts at least once in your life. i can go on about its history, demographics and endless statistics of the years it has served bagels, lox and breakfasts to many a montrealers over the decades. but there is not need to, as it has been said many times over. the reasons it has been in business for so long is its winning formula.  breakfasts are decent and prices reasonable.  beauty's is a legend in its own right, a must for any generation to enjoy for many more years to come.

this wonderful diner was started in 1942 by hymie and freda sckolnick, who started out calling it the bancroft coffee shop. but, after the locals kept referring to it as “beauty’s” (hymie’s bowling nickname) they gave in and now, 4 generations later, the family is still running the place. they are famous for the “beauty’s special,” a bagel sandwich with cream cheese, smoked salmon, tomato and red onion which is indeed special, but the food all looks wonderful (and we can also endorse the blueberry pancakes).

beauty's is one of the restaurants that represent the soul and history of montreal's culinary culture, it's often mentioned along the likes of schwartz, wilensky and st-viateur. what sets it apart are its brunches, it's said to be the birth place of brunch in montreal. some even went so far as saying one hasn't really visited montreal without a visit to beauty's. but for some reason, i haven't visited it yet until last sunday, as a long time montrealers, i felt a bit guilty about it.

like many of the old culinary institutions, the exterior of beautiy's is quite modest, almost looks like a giant metal box, but it's interior is filled with history and glory, on the walls of its small corridor were a large collection of post of its press exposures.

inside the restaurant are rows of old fashioned booths with soft benches, and a long bar along its kitchen where you can see your brunches being made in front of your eyes. various pictures of the owners and its vip guests dotted the walls.

it's obvious that beauty's is a family run restaurant with most of its staff being the offsprings of its original owner, mr. beauty's. although mr. beauty's already passed the baton to his children, he still comes to the restaurant himself as if to make sure the new generation is running the restaurant strictly in the high standards he has set for decades and customers are satisfied. so from the moment i walked through the door i could tell all the staff are quite hospital and polite, and they all go out of the way to make you feel at home. even mr. beauty's himself would occasionally came to the door way to greet the line and he would ask the waitresses to refill coffee or water when he saw a customer's cups were emptied. this strike me as a stark contrast with some other established restaurants such as the schewartzs' where the staff is bit ignorant and even arrogant.

alright, let's get down to talk about its food. the restaurant is positioned as a luncheonette meaning they only open for breakfast and lunch. so they have a quite comprehensive brunch menu that include everything you could think of for a typical breakfast or lunch, top on the list of course are their famed brunches and omelettes, in addition, you'll find everything from soup, salad to burger, crepe and waffle etc,

since it's my first visit, i tried to stick to the classics. for brunches, they have beauty's basic, super beauty 2 and beauty's special. the first 2 are very typical brunches with eggs, fries, bagel, one or multiple of breakfast meats such as bacon, ham, salami. i was told beautify's special is their signature dish. so of cause, i went for it. another dish i have wanted to try is their trade-mark omelette called mish-mash.

the beauty's special is essentially a giant bagel sandwich. with slices of tomatoes, red onion, smoked salmon and creme cheese layered perfectly between two wood-fire baked bagel buns. i was wowed by it immediately after the very first bite. every ingredient in the sandwitch is so fresh you can literally smell it, the tomato was succulent, the red onion was crispy with a hint of spiciness, the salmon filet was as fresh as sashimi with a light smokiness , the cream cheese was not too salty and serves as a perfect spread for the bagel buns, but the real star of the sandwich was the bagel itself, it was crunchy, tasty with just the right amount of firmness and a very pleasant wood-fire aroma. it was just perfect for me. some say that the bagel was from st-viatur, so i'm not sure who should get the credit.

the mish-mash omelet was good too, but not perfect. the home fries are actually pan seared thin potato slices, i would like it better had it been cooked like hash brown, the omelet was well fried and tasted good, but the hot dog wasn't of the best quality, in addition it would mix better with the eggs had it been minced rather than sliced. and i didn't see any trace of salami and grilled onion in it which were mentioned on the menu.

over all i was very impressed with their food and service, will for sure visit again to try some other classic dishes and their smoothies which seem to be quite popular too. beauty's lives up to its reputation.

beautys is one of those montreal classics that has stood the test of time in the plateau. this diner has sat on the corner of st urbain and mont-royal since 1942. in the heart of montreal’s jewish garment district, hymie and freda sckolnick started serving food to the workers of nearby factories. this busy lunch counter served the fastest and best diner fare in the city.

open since 1942, the interior evokes the diner style of the period, with booths, banquettes and round laminate tabletops. owner hymie sckolnick, who founded beauty's and is as much a fixture here as the walls, still greets and seats every party at the door.

the breakfast/brunch menu covers the usual suspects of eggs, bagels and pancakes alongside jewish specialties such as blinis, potato latkes and challah french toast.  one iconic breakfast item is the beautys special, consisting of smoked salmon, cream cheese, tomato and red onion in a sliced bagel.

by nancy october 25, 2015 breakfast / brunch, canada, canadian, food, location, montreal, travel no comments. beautys lucheonette montreal is one of those iconic restaurants that screams “montreal”. located in the plateau mont royal district, beauty has been around since 1942. it was opened by newlyweds hymie and freda sckolnick. the name beautys was actually hymie’s bowling nickname. it remains a family business to this day. for you – just know the beautys special (smoked salmon, cream cheese, red onions and tomato on a toasted sesame seed st-viateur bagel). add this to your “what to eat in montreal” gluttony tour list.

this place has been around since forever. home of the mishmash omelet. 60's diner type place. extra friendly service. the menu proposes typical montréal brunch items (bagel & lox, etc.) but when the food arrives it's rather average for the price.

went for brunch ahead of #oysterfest and hymie sckolnick was there to seat us. absolute legend that he is. i copied bourdain and opted for the beauty's special bagel with a side of eggs. you know when you go somewhere, and they ask exactly the right questions when you order? as in, me - "i'll have a side of eggs please", them- "scrambled or fried, sunny side up or easy over", craig - "i'll have

not worth it. i really don't know what all the fuss is about? why do people line up on weekends to eat at beauty's? it's ordinary, at best. one saturday morning, before the crowds would get there, i decided to try my neighbourhood brunch place and went to beauty's. i had the full breakfast plate - eggs, potatoes, sausages, bacon, pancakes, the works! first thing i noticed is that for $12,50 (plus tax), they don't serve you any fruit or offer you any juice, which is a bit pricy compared to other restaurants. then let's talk about the food: i've never had blander scrambled eggs. they were oily yet dry (how is that possible?) and completely tasteless. then the two small pieces of bacon were so dry they would break when you'd try to pick them up and eat them... and so salty!! to be fair, the sausages were ok, so were the pancakes. but i really don't understand the hype. the diner is loud (mostly because the waitress who had nothing to do when we were there were chatting loudly together right next to my table). the staff was nice but it was near impossible to get their attention when it was time to pay (though half the restaurant was empty).

food 3/10

i traveled to montreal, canada, recently to present my master's thesis as part of the aejmc conference. it was an incredible experience where i met people conducting similar research, and, of course, there was a lot of food. i wanted to try what the locals loved, so i followed this list as closely as i could (plus some extras). joe beef was closed for vacation, but the rest of them i got! schwartz's deli schwartz's was no. 1 on my list. i trekked to this side of town via metro and then by foot, waited in line until it was finally my turn and told them it would be just one. they squeeze you in whereever there is space, so it's likely you'll sit next to someone you don't know. i actually was seated at the bar. i asked for the schwartz's special - smoked meat sandwich (lean, medium or fatty) - i went with medium. served on bread with mustard. it's a giant pile of meat, but it's tasty. just very hearty. before i was even done, they put the check in front of me. this is a no-lingering type
