always get the "italian roll" and an extra loaf of fresh-baked bread (it won't last the trip home). delicious sandwiches, soups, hot-case items like pastas and meats. greatplaceto pick up any item you might ever need for an italian snack or meal.

italian goodness. thisplacewas great! italian grocery store with an amazingly yummy deli inside. we went right in the middle of lunch time and it was packed. they aren't the quickest at getting orders out the door, but it was worth it. everything our party had was delicious. we are able to have a lovely lunch outside on the tables and we would definitely come back next time we're in the area.
*no restrooms, even for paying customers. and the grocery store across the street charges you to use theirs, so keep that in mind.*

bay cities. this is a greatplacefor lunch!

previous reviews are right about the parking & the lines, but i've always ordered online & walked there.

the sandwiches & soups are the best! everything is freshly made & very reasonably priced.

they're closed on monday's. but try going there on another day & you won't be disappointed!

the real deal!. i'm from new york - and have been to italy a few times - and thisplaceis the real deal! the deli counter has all the standards, cheeses, cold cuts, etc., and an awesome hot bar with pastas, soups and meat dishes. personal fave: eggplant parm sub. it's also a little grocery jam-packed with all kinds of interesting imports on the shelves as well as refrigerator cases for fresh cheeses and desserts (yup, including tiramisu and cannoli)... as well as a liquor section.

they also have outdoor tables ringing two sides of their little stand-alone store! so you can either enjoy a reasonably-priced meal al fresco (tip: we get food to go then drive about 5 minutes and park overlooking the ocean along ocean blvd), or it's one-stop shopping for an authentic - an innovative if you want it to be - italian dinner at home. can't beat it.

only drawback: their parking lot holds about 20 cars, which is never enough for such a popular place, although they do have a guy (at least during busy hours) to help regulate traffic. but if you either go at an off-hour, or are at least forewarned that it gets really busy, should be fine.

didn't know that santa monica had a little piece of manhattan in it's grips. was down at santa monica on the promenade today and as a working tourist was looking for a non tourist meal
jumped on urban spoon and read the reviews forplaceand i said this is me and it didn't disappoint
grabed a meat ball sandwich and tried the eggplant parma but couldn't get close to finishing either
great flavor
great value
felt as if i was in nyc
i will go back

good sandwiches, bad bread?. went in the other day and ordered the godmother. great sandwich, but i didn't like the bread. does it really have to be so hard? i couldn't take a bite of it without struggling. chewing was just as difficult. aside from that theplaceis good, and the inside of the sandwich was delicious.

...this is theplaceto go for amazing, heavenly sandwiches on bread from the gods, a deli counter filled with goodies both hot and cold that invariably mean one buys more than they planned and a selection of dry goods and wine to complete the perfect picnic at the beach (or lunch at one of the tables outside if you’re lucky enough to snag one).

beware. this is definitly theplaceto go for people who do not really know any better about italian food.

you can get physically and verbally abused for no extra charge if you order incorrectly

if that does not work the wannabee thugs aka hector and carlos aka jr will remove you from the premises.

they don't care if they tell you to get out becuase i was told directly they have so many customers it really does not matter

also for no extra charge you get the worst
service and need to speak spanish to get it right!!!

never to return thank g-d

picnic at parking lot, hehe!!!. amazing!!! thisplaceis so lively and of course packed with people. there're some picnic tables in the parking lot area.
two of us shared a hot corned beef sandwich and a pint of shrimp bow-tie pasta, we had enough of food. sandwich loaded with corned-beef, a thick piece of cheese, some shredded cabbages and a toasted bun; very delicious!! shrimp bow-tie pasta was ok.
we didn't try cold sandwich and salad because there was a long line, so be prepared. no line for hot sandwiches.

bay cities = good grub. oh sweet, sweet bay cities deli, will you be my valentine? i know the teacher told me to bring enough scooby-doo, or spider man, or my personal favorite... legends of the hidden temple... valentines cards for everyone in class... but my love is only for you. because seriously, when have any of the other kids given me the greatest gift of all... fresh baked bread, italian cold cuts, and a magical blend of toppings simply known as the works? side note... if you ever go to a place, and you have the options of getting the works and you don't get it... well, i'm pretty sure you deserve a roundhouse kick to the face... and i wouldn't put it past any of the bay cities sandwich gurus from dishing one out. you've got to be tough when you come into bay cities... willpower is the name of the game. because no matter what time of the day you head down to get your grub on, you'll grab your number... let's say its "72".. and then you start to do some "everyone-who-has-ever-had-this-place-loves-this-place" bay cities' math... and that means they're currently on customer "41." and that's where the willpower comes into play. because at first you play the "how-do-i-move-without-trampling-this-old-lady-game?" and then you realize you're forced right up against the display counter with all their meats, cheeses, salads, and homemade italian specialties... and now it's time to play the "how-many-slices-of-garlic-bread-and-chicken-parmesan-cutlets-can-i-take-down-before-it's-my-time-to-order? game." patience my good grub constituents... your time shall come, and it will be most worth your wait. because when your number is called, you'll have to fight off the urge to do your own version of the goonies truffle shuffle. but when you are finally chosen rush to the front toplaceyour order, because the mustached dudes behind the counter mean business (seriously, we think bay cities might have finally discovered the perfect facial hair combination to make a most-grub-worthy sub) ... and they will pass your number... and you will deserve it. our favorite master-behind-the-counter would have to be the one donning the mclovin' name tag, because we always have to resist throwing down a "chicka chicka, yeah, fake id, fake id." the consensus sandwich to get at bay cities is definitely the god mother, a geniously crafted sub with layer-upon-layer of italian cold cuts. but for me, it's the simple turkey sandwich that keeps bringing me back, because there's something beautiful about the clean canvas of a turkey sandwich that let's the bay cities' artisan do his magic, sculpting his masterpiece with thin sliced provolone, perfectly sweet and salty italian dressing, and the topper-of-all-toppers... mixed mild and spicy peppers. when you're done with your sandwich, your belly happy and full, sitting back in the santa monica breeze, pondering how long it will take for your mustache to grow out... it finally hits you (if it hasn't already)... life is good but bay cities' grub is better. see more at goodtogrub.com
