another great lexington staple. the main thing i have learned since working in lexington is that there is no such thing as bad barbecue in davidson county. for around $10 i was able to get a large plate of chopped pork, slaw, fries, fried okra, hushpuppies and a drink. the food is affordable, the restaurant is cleaned, the barbecue is pit cooked and the staff is friendly.

i had this one last stop before i had to leave north carolina.
the chopped pork tray was very good. the pork had hardly no fat, was very moist and just the right amount of "dip". i call dip bbq sauce but when in lexington...
the bbq chicken my friend had was the moistest bbq chicken beast i have ever tasted (or sampled as i scammed a piece from his plate)
the service staff was way above the normal - i am not sure i have ever been so attentively waited on.
there were yummy ice cream shakes for desert that was a perfect end to the experience.

decided to stop here on the way back to charlotte from chapel hill for some lexington style bbq. i ordered a small chopped bbq tray which came with red slaw and hush puppies. the chopped pork was tender and had decent flavor, but was nothing outstanding. the red slaw was pretty average and the hush puppies were as well. overall the food was pretty good but no better than many other barbecue joints i've tried.

by far the best bbq in lexington, which is saying a lot. great staff and owner. friendly environment with a small town feel that is just too hard to find now days. if you are passing anywhere near lexington, make this your stop for food.

tried the course chopped and half chicken combo with sweet potato fries and potato salad. there was no bark on the pork at all, but it was very tender yet not overcooked and the "dip" paired nicely with it, the chicken was a mealy mess, about an hour overcooked...yuk...but the sides, hush puppies and tea were very good.

amazing!. the bbq center is a small place with a lot character. i had the chopped barbecue plate with red coleslaw, french fries, and hush puppies. all i can say is that bbq center is incredible, and the service and atmosphere are authentic.
for dessert, we shared the enormous family-sized banana split. i looked around and nearly every family had some sort of dessert.
it seems like bbq-c is the place to be, as it was busy with a steady flow of customers. it was an enjoyable experience for my entire family.

the meal looked fantastic - exactly as a barbecue meal should. i bit into the pork and noticed a definite smoke flavor. it was also perfectly tender. i think my biggest problem was with the dip, which seemed a little heavy on the ketchup, making it sweeter than i like.

posted fri, 06/21/2013 - 10:39 by smoke daddy tour:  north carolina tour joint:  the barbecue center, inc. history dates back to the 50's, and sonny conrad has been there for most of that time.  originally started as an ice cream stand that sold some barbecue on the side.  great atmosphere and lexington-style barbecue... oh, and save some room for banana pudding or a hand-dipped banana split (large enough to share with the whole family)! main fare: chopped (sandwich) - mmmmm... smoky.  the chopped here is a very nice mix of meat.  good texture.  chopped fine, but not mushy. sliced - nice pink smoke ring all the way through.  meat is firm, but flavorful. easily breaks into chunk, but doesn't shred.  darker pieces are wonderfully rich and tender. other fare: hush puppies - good.  lighter outside coating, with more good cornbread on the inside. slaw - cocktail sauce over cabbage... with a kick. dip - this is really great stuff.  balance of flavors enhances the meat. banana pudding - very

north carolina sez they invented barbecue, and who am i to argue? leave that for texans, memphisites, kansas city folks. the state is dotted with barbecue joints of all manners and sizes, ages and menus, but you’ll find a concentration of 20+ outlets around lexington, ky, and that’s where i started my tour. the “lexington barbecue” is supposed to be da bomb place, and the old timey one, but i arrived in town early in the am, and barbecue center, another old was open early. i popped in expecting only to find a breakfast menu, but i suppose die-hard ‘cue folks eat it whenever it’s available, so the full menu was available. dilemma. breakfast? country ham biscuit with sausage gravy, oh my? or go right for the ‘cue. answer. both. ate the country ham on the spot, got the sandwich to go. both excellent. if you’re a ‘cue hound, head to north carolina. i’ve been to the bbq capital of texas, lockhart, and lexington beats it by miles.   tweet leave a re

solid lexington style bbq. never have felt this bbq joint was the best of lexington's bbq restaurants, but it does serve some pretty darn good bbq pork, and the bbq chicken is not a bad choice either. the pork here is consistently smoky, moist, and tender - it needs little help from any type of sauce.

the red slaw is typical, the fries are awful, and the hush puppies are good here. they serve some diner items - it is more like a diner inside than a nc bbq joint - and have some nice deserts, including ice cream sundaes. when gosnell first started this restaurant, it was both a dairy bar & a bbq joint, and still is to some degree.

the hot dog here ok, nothing special, i'd stick with the barbecue. i've tried their fried chicken a time or two, ande again i'd stick with the barbecue.

now this place is a little pricey, by lexington standards, and they have changed their portion sizes, and their baskets now have chips, rather than fries, but then again, the fries are not good.
