no service. my husband and i went there last night prior to going to the fox theater around 4 pm. seated right away. someone poured us water. after about 10 mins and making eye contact with the bartender several times he looked around and finally come too, our order. bought us bread said there is the olive oil and walked off. then someone else brought our food. there was 1 guy at the bar and another couple already eating. more people came in about 30 mins later we were finishing our meal. the same bartender walked off told them the specials for the day and put some kind of herb in their olive oil. we were also told we came in during shift change but the bartender was the only one i saw waiting on tables. food over priced and not anything to brag about.

ok experience. it was a good dining experience. everything was just ok. i can't complain about anything here but nothing really blew me away. i wish i had ordered a pizza here. i would suggest sticking with those over the pasta.

as the holiday weekend approached, grant e-mailed and asked if we were going to be in town for the weekend and might want to meet he and marie and have dinner.  we compared notes of places that neither had been, and decided on baraonda ristorante & bar .  the name was on my list, but i couldn’t quite place where it was until i googled the address.  it was then that i realized that this was the place just down the street from the fox (on the same side of the road), that you can see from their parking lot.  we had no issue getting a table on-line and both pulled into the parking garage they use (down 3rd street toward juniper) at about the same time.  the restaurant covers two hours of parking fees in that deck, so don’t forget to have them validate your ticket.  i don’t know if that works when there are events at the fox as i believe the garage becomes a pay-per-event place, but that’s just a guess.

the wild boar sausage was tender & delicious-i'd never had boar prior to having this sausage and it was amazing! the sauce wasn't too heavy and the addition of the rapini and cherry tomatoes gave a soft, chewy texture different from that of the pasta.

great food served by a surly hostile waiter in a restaurant so dark we had to use our cell phones to read the menu. my dining companion was reluctant to ask the waiter for anything given his clear hostility, but remarked on his brief almost pleasant demeanor as he delivered the food - i had to be concerned if he had done something to the food. as background, my party consisted of three quiet adults. we arrived at 9 pm on a friday. the restaurant was busy but not packed. the waiter's hostility began the second we arrived and was not engendered by anything we did. we were far more pleasant to him than he was to us. not going back.

the good, the bad and the pizza. went here tonight at the suggestion of the concierge desk at the w hotel. it gets a mixed review. first, it's a beautiful space. it pretty much looks the part of a traditional-style italian restaurant, or as close as you would get in the u.s. and then i heard the theme song to the latest bourne movie. um...okay. my server, annie, was friendly and pretty prompt. i ordered a cocktail to start and then waited and waited until a guy **in a plaid shirt** and jeans delivered the cocktail with a sticky stem. (sigh). okay. the servers and busboys are wearing black shirts and long black aprons and an assistant manager is in a plaid shirt.

the lights and candles added a nice ambiance as the sun went down and i realized i had one of the best seats in the house, even though i was dining alone; perfect view of the wood burning oven. i ordered a pizza (romana, i believe, with pancetta, onions and sun dried tomatoes). although the oven is wood burning, they need to crank up the heat a few notches, as the pizza wasn't remotely charred and the crust hadn't even risen very much. the pizza was pretty overloaded, the onions - lets be honest - would have benefitted enormously by being caramelized rather than simply fried and the tomatoes tasted kind of cheap.

part way through, i asked annie for a recommendation for a glass of mid-priced full-bodied red wine. again delivered by the plaid shirt with a sticky stem. the wine itself, though, was wonderful. stellar. so i really must say, annie's service, recommendations and conversation kind of saved the show, even though she was pretty busy by the end of my visit.

this restaurant could be a lot more, with just a few changes. first, require *everyone* dress the part, not just the staff earning $2.13/hour (and wipe down the glassware stems). crank up the wood fire heat (perhaps heating it a few hours earlier; 500 degrees is not hot enough for the product you are supposed to deliver from a wood-burning oven). pare down the pizza toppings. and for heaven's sake, put on some decent italian music. if i want to hear contemporary music, i'll go to a fast food place, diner or american-style place. i wanted to like this place a lot more than i actually did.
