i'm told that it is owned by the same people who own ortiga (yum), but because it operates out of the brisbane city council owned powerhouse arts centre, the council restrict them in terms of pricing which is why you can get mains under $30. maybe so starving actors can engage in some fine dining without breaking the bank? i've eaten at bar alto twice now, and both times the food andservicehas been pretty good. and certainly excellent for the price. but here are two tips for you: if you sit inside, you will come out smelling like a fish and chip shop as there isn't a lot of ventilation and the deep fryer gets a real work out here if you order off the a la carte menu, you will have food envy of those who order off the pasta menu what

besides the morning after, it was another temptation after i read the article from the urban list that the mussels at bar alto is an a-must dish in brisbane.
we have not been around the area before and i was shocked about the development here although i lived in new farm years ago.
located inside the powerhouse, the ambience is cosy with nice river view. there are around eight chefs working in the kitchen, two bar-tenders and around five front-line staff.serviceis hospitable. our table was at the end of the indoor dining area so it was peaceful and comfortable to enjoy our good journey.
after perused of the menu, we decided to go for the charcuterie board of all the varieties of cured meats that it is serving for entree. we also ordered the prawns and squids strozzapreti and one kg of the signature mussels.
before any meals in the table, the set up of bowls and plates on the tables was spectacular. they nearly occupied the whole table surface.
first came the charcuterie board, which was composed of air dry wagyu, salami, pork loin and prosciutto. we had the salami and prosciutto before but never had the the wagyu and pork loins. they were both interesting. after that, the pasta and the mussels came at the same time. wow! look at those mussels sitting in the big bowl l. they looked great. however, they were slightly overdone and not the best that we had in our past dining experience. having said that the pasta gained marks back. it was al dente. tomato based sauce came with strong sea water taste. it is very tasteful.
overall, dining experience is decent.

i had forgotten how good the food here is. we had ravioli with bugs, grilled octopus and tempura zucchini flowers - yum! i can't remember the other starter- think it had figs and prosciutto. anyway, it was gobbled up very quickly, so there is no photo! we were in a bit of a rush to see a show and theservicewas friendly and efficient. next time we will take it much more slowly. thanks bar alto.

if this ain't considered a treat, i honestly don't know how the english language works anymore. we have something special here, not only with the quality of the food - we will discuss the nuances later - but also with just the whole atmosphere, and the location of this all-around wonderful venue, it is almost like it does not even have to try. everything feels natural and right with how it is designed, and how it is presented. alone, the powerhouse is spectacular, and adding on great food to compliment it makes it even better.

it had been such a long time since i had seen a good friend of mine, and i often try now to keep in contact with people. people get busy and whatnot, but the effort is always important to maintain that. anyways, long story short i was meeting one old friend from university over at the powerhouse in new farm one day. the idea was just to catch up for some drinks, discuss some stuffy and to me get something to eat in the meantime. his idea was getting some wine, and i was happy with the usual coffee. in getting the food, i had a few commitments to get to so i was making use of time to get sustenance before heading back on the road with the schedule - it gets like that nowadays.

let's just say briefly with the powerhouse, as much as brisbane is lacking any real attraction on the level of some of its national counterparts at least the powerhouse is something to get to and see. the design of it is really pretty, you can't argue for a better location overlooking the river and just near the fantastic new farm park. it was made to be the kind of place to go to be entertained, it was made to be the place to go for socialising and it was made for special events. there are not many places like it in town.

service is really friendly. the lasses at the bar were chirpy, approachable and with customerserviceskills that were top notch. when getting the food, at least at the bar, you are given a buzzer which goes off after a while. come up to the counter when it does, and the food will be ready under the lamps to be picked up.

it is a bit unlike me to start describing the menu by listing out the drinks. at least in this part, that is the case. there are two sections to this bar, one that is for drinks and bar snacks and the other is for some fancy sit-down meal. for the most part, this is a big wine bar. the glasses that they use are big (though they don't fill them all the way up). the wine list is big, with sections dedicated to sparkling & champagne, whites, reds - which is the biggest of them all, and a couple of dessert wines. for other drinks, there is caraffa which is to share, various spirits, cocktails, and beers and ciders. non-alcoholic drinks are all available as usual.

when it comes to food, most of the influence stems from italian. it is a fairly modest selection, focusing highly on having cordon bleu quality, with each of the items well chosen and presenting an aspect of italian dining to give the full experience. for this place, it would be perfection as a first date, or to be the location for a business venture. they have something for all tastes, and one can follow the menu to get the whole experience. heck, they even have meals for two here.

someone wanting pizza can also be satisfied here, though that might be at the bar menu. regardless, for something a bit cheaper and more casual there is a good range of items at the bar to get. you can get some of the basics here, though more quality and well-crafted canapes are on offer. among these include focaccia and antipasti.

anyways, getting to the drink that i had it was none other than coffee - if it were not mentioned already. the coffee that i have now is doppio. i can't rightfully remember what bean was being used, but whatever it was the barista behind the counter really knew their stuff. it was strong, had a good, silky texture along with a flavour that was slightly fruity - maybe stonefruit - and the crema on top was good as well. it was extracted right, the temperature was perfect, and all-around what i needed at the time - something to perk me up. this one was so good, or i was going to be here for a while so another one was definitely in order. it was during then i pounced on the chance to get some grub to eat.

like i said, i went with a couple of snacks with the food. to get a decent idea of the place, i got two bits of food. one was salt cod croquettes, and the other was sort of like a sandwich. chickpea patties made the "bread", and between them was fennel and pork belly. both of these were good, and different which always helps.

with the salt cod croquettes, they are quickly becoming one of the most reliable foods to my knowledge - they are sweet, soft as butter on the inside and these lot had a really hot and crispy coating to surround it. this is almost like eating fried mashed potato. on the side was some aioli, and it was not bad at all.

then with the chickpea one, it was a little less flavoursome. however, the quality was probably objectively superior. if not, the presentation certainly trumped it. along side it, there was salsa verde which spiced it up a bit. the chickpeas were soft, the fennel and pork belly went together nicely giving different textures. it might not be one that i would constantly gobble at if there were lots of plates, but i certainly will give credit for the quality and care given.

so yeah, there is no denying that this is a nice place. the location is spectacular, the atmosphere is one of the most lively yet relaxing and from the food that i had sampled here, the quality was top notch. why it might have such a low score for its calibre, in honesty i don't reckon i can give it too higher of a score if i did not give the place too much of a go for what it offers. maybe some more canapes, or a sit-down meal with a couple of courses, and i could talk more at length, but as of now just heed the work that it does not suck.

disappointed with the bar food andserviceat bar alto. waitresses were rather abrupt, antipasti was served with a couple of grissini (no bread) and was very meagre - consisting of some chunks of parmesan, some slices of prosciutto, a small bowl of olives and half a peach. the pizzas we had were ok, but nothing to go back for. the self serve water comes in plastic takeaway cups. the view is lovely - the only consolation we felt after bringing our french visitor here.

i really enjoyed eating here.
we went for lunch, servicewas discreet and friendly, and the menu has a good selection.
we had the bread and oil to start and i was surprised how good the bread was, soft with a nice crisp crust.
the mains were all excellent, a whole snapper shared by my 2 friends was pronounced as the best fish dish she had eaten in australia!
i had the homemade strozzapreti which was served just as i like it, al dente with a punchy, flavourful sauce and the last dish was linguine and clams which was also good, light and delicate.
for dessert we had the bomoloni, tiramisu and the crostata di mele which i thought was the standout dessert. a light crisp base with sweet soft apple, and a caramel sauce with a hint of anise....divine.

tip: i had the smaller sized strozzapreti which was plenty for a satisfying meal

great night. i went to see the world press photography exhibition at the powerhouse and so booked to have dinner with friends beforehand. bar alto is an italian restaurant on the ground level of the powerhouse. the wine list and menu are extensive (perhaps too many food choices) and theservicewas efficient. i ordered the roast duck ravioli with mushrooms and pinenuts and my husband ordered the quail. both were cooked to perfection. (hint - if you are not a big eater order the entree size pasta and then you will have room for dessert). for dessert i chose the almond milk pannacotta with strawberries and balsamic (the special) this was so light and the strawberries went really well with the almond flavor. the only slight drawback was the jelly like pieces - they gave too big a burst of flavor. perhaps it would of worked if they had been smaller. it is perhaps slightly overpriced but overall it was a great night and i would return.

excellent food and efficient service. bar alto is my reliable go-to for laidback food made well. nothing beats their flavourful, aromatic food served piping hot. the texture of the pasta is just right. seafood is just cooked. the vegetables are fresh. the meat is still juicy. (and all served hot!) theserviceis a very good balance of friendly and efficient --- none of that chirpy hoveringserviceone usually finds these days, where the server invariably takes away one's plate while one is still chewing and makes so much conversation, one feels one has to entertain rather than enjoy the meal. two thumbs (and big toes) up, bar alto! keep up the good work!

cafe would do it better. four of us, after a show. expecting something a step up from bar alto. risotto - gluggy and tasteless. ravioli as hard as bricks and stuffing was indistinguishable. i wouldn't have bothered with a review except that we keep trying brisbane restaurants and far too often waste our money on sub standard food. i don't understand how many of these places are still in business. look forward to hearing about some decent restaurants in the new farm/ newstead area.

-----12 nov, 2014-----

waste of money and time. three of us decided to eat here after a show. why do brisbane restaurants get away with such totally substandard food? the risotto was bland, tasteless as 'mush'. we expected the duck ravioli to be tender - the pasta was tough and hard, the filling indiscernible as duck or anything else. for a friday night, there were few tables occupied so perhaps the word is out on bar alto.servicepoor too - i didn't enjoy being continually referred to a 'lovey' . what a shame - we are locals and would happily patronise a restaurant serving well executed food. we are supposed to be living in an area with good eateries - well we've tried many and there are very few we return to. wish we had an equivalent to bondi's a tavola.

it was ok. the vibe of this place was great andservicewas also good.
the food was not the best that i have had and for the price i was left disappointed .
i had the chicken dish which was lovely and the others at the table had the lamb belly which was very rich and it was the only thing on the plate. the beans lost their natural flavour as it had an over powering bacon taste.

deserts were a mixed bag the apple tart was lacking the carmel sauce with anise was bitter and over powering the highlight was the gelato.

the tiramisu was light nice flavour and one of the better ones i have tasted, however it needs less cream and more mascarpone. the self saucing chocolate pudding was very rich and could not be finished by those who chose it.

it was not a bad meal and i do not mind paying the price for a good meal but i will not be going back it was just so so
