if this ain't considered a treat, i honestly don't know how the english language works anymore. we have something special here, not only with the quality of the food - we will discuss the nuances later - but also with just the whole atmosphere, and the location of this all-around wonderful venue, it is almost like it does not even have to try. everything feels natural and right with how it is designed, and how it is presented. alone, the powerhouse is spectacular, and adding on great food to compliment it makes it even better.

it had been such a long time since i had seen a good friend of mine, and i often try now to keep in contact with people. people get busy and whatnot, but the effort is always important to maintain that. anyways, long story short i was meeting one old friend from university over at the powerhouse in new farm one day. the idea was just to catch up for some drinks, discuss some stuffy and to me get something to eat in the meantime. his idea was getting some wine, and i was happy with the usual coffee. in getting the food, i had a few commitments to get to so i was making use of time to get sustenance before heading back on the road with the schedule - it gets like that nowadays.

let's just say briefly with the powerhouse, as much as brisbane is lacking any real attraction on the level of some of its national counterparts at least the powerhouse is something to get to and see. the design of it is really pretty, you can't argue for a better location overlooking the river and just near the fantastic new farm park. it was made to be the kind of place to go to be entertained, it was made to be the place to go for socialising and it was made for special events. there are not many places like it in town.

service is really friendly. the lasses at the bar were chirpy, approachable and with customer service skills that were top notch. when getting the food, at least at the bar, you are given a buzzer which goes off after a while. come up to the counter when it does, and the food will be ready under the lamps to be picked up.

it is a bit unlike me to start describing the menu by listing out the drinks. at least in this part, that is the case. there are two sections to this bar, one that is for drinks and bar snacks and the other is for some fancy sit-down meal. for the most part, this is a big wine bar. the glasses that they use are big (though they don't fill them all the way up). the wine list is big, with sections dedicated to sparkling & champagne, whites, reds - which is the biggest of them all, and a couple of dessert wines. for other drinks, there is caraffa which is to share, various spirits, cocktails, and beers and ciders. non-alcoholic drinks are all available as usual.

when it comes to food, most of the influence stems from italian. it is a fairly modest selection, focusing highly on having cordon bleu quality, with each of the items well chosen and presenting an aspect of italian dining to give the full experience. for this place, it would be perfection as a first date, or to be the location for a business venture. they have something for all tastes, and one can follow the menu to get the whole experience. heck, they even have meals for two here.

someone wanting pizza can also be satisfied here, though that might be at the bar menu. regardless, for something a bit cheaper and more casual there is a good range of items at the bar to get. you can get some of the basics here, though more quality and well-crafted canapes are on offer. among these include focaccia and antipasti.

anyways, getting to the drink that i had it was none other than coffee - if it were not mentioned already. the coffee that i have now is doppio. i can't rightfully remember what bean was being used, but whatever it was the barista behind the counter really knew their stuff. it was strong, had a good, silky texture along with a flavour that was slightly fruity - maybe stonefruit - and the crema on top was good as well. it was extracted right, the temperature was perfect, and all-around what i needed at the time - something to perk me up. this one was so good, or i was going to be here for a while so another one was definitely in order. it was during then i pounced on the chance to get some grub to eat.

like i said, i went with a couple of snacks with the food. to get a decent idea of the place, i got two bits of food. one was salt cod croquettes, and the other was sort of like a sandwich. chickpea patties made the "bread", and between them was fennel and pork belly. both of these were good, and different which always helps.

with the salt cod croquettes, they are quickly becoming one of the most reliable foods to my knowledge - they are sweet, soft as butter on the inside and these lot had a really hot and crispy coating to surround it. this is almost like eating fried mashed potato. on the side was some aioli, and it was not bad at all.

then with the chickpea one, it was a little less flavoursome. however, the quality was probably objectively superior. if not, the presentation certainly trumped it. along side it, there was salsa verde which spiced it up a bit. the chickpeas were soft, the fennel and pork belly went together nicely giving different textures. it might not be one that i would constantly gobble at if there were lots of plates, but i certainly will give credit for the quality and care given.

so yeah, there is no denying that this is a nice place. the location is spectacular, the atmosphere is one of the most lively yet relaxing and from the food that i had sampled here, the quality was top notch. why it might have such a low score for its calibre, in honesty i don't reckon i can give it too higher of a score if i did not give the place too much of a go for what it offers. maybe some more canapes, or a sit-downmealwith a couple of courses, and i could talk more at length, but as of now just heed the work that it does not suck.

lovely place to seat and have a drink. food on the other hand is a whole other matter...
it was all very low value for money, but the highlight was definitely the salad, which unfortunately we ordered 2 of. the description sounded lovely but in reality, we got 3 leaves, 2 baby beetroot a cut in half, 4 slices of capers and approximately 2 table spoons of yoghurt. what was even worse was that i've asked one of the waiters prior to ordering how big these were and was told they were "sizeable". it was $12 by the way.
i didn't expect a pubmealportions but $12 should be a half decent sized salad.
i probably should have returned these and ask for my money back but we were in quite a hurry by the time they arrived and just needed to eat and go...
i won't be coming back

above it attached to the bar above is bar alto, a modern italian restaurant serving many patrons of the shows that are playing in the powerhouse’s theatres, or those there for a sunday soiree. bar alto is quick for groups of pre-theater diners who want amealbefore a show.

this is our where to eat and drink guide to brisbane; incomplete and personally biased for the sort of food we like and what we consider to be ‘value for money’. we have decided to divide our restaurant preferences into occasions rather than areas. we find that generally, where you go depends as much on the reason as the suburb. you have favourite places for family dinner, for sunday afternoon drinks and wednesday morning breakfasts and you are happy to travel to get to them. if you want a complete guide for where to eat in brisbane by price or suburb, visit urbanspoon . you can read our urbanspoon reviews as well. we hope you enjoy our recommendations as much as we do. good anytime foxy bean, wooloongabba – can’t say a bad thing about this place seeing as it was birgit’s wedding venue, but it is good for anymealof the day. kettle and tin, paddington – popular from brunch through to tuesday trivia and birthday parties, it’s hard to go wrong at kettle and tin. hoo ha bar, south brisba

it was ok. the vibe of this place was great and service was also good.
the food was not the best that i have had and for the price i was left disappointed .
i had the chicken dish which was lovely and the others at the table had the lamb belly which was very rich and it was the only thing on the plate. the beans lost their natural flavour as it had an over powering bacon taste.

deserts were a mixed bag the apple tart was lacking the carmel sauce with anise was bitter and over powering the highlight was the gelato.

the tiramisu was light nice flavour and one of the better ones i have tasted, however it needs less cream and more mascarpone. the self saucing chocolate pudding was very rich and could not be finished by those who chose it.

it was not a badmealand i do not mind paying the price for a goodmealbut i will not be going back it was just so so

had a very memorablemealat bar alto last night. sweeping statements aside, i would even go as far as to say it was one of the best meals i have ever eaten out. started with the terrine, pork chops for main and almond pannacotta for dessert. all dishes were extraordinary, and i'm pretty fussy! perfectly balanced creations of both flavour and texture. the service is also very good (just don't expect to befriend the waitstaff

flavors which left wanting more.

high expectations!!. but unfortunately this was one of the worse meals i have ever had the "pleasure" of paying for. it was a very happy vibrant resturant but let down with too hip waiters throwing the food in front of you, and rushing away. even collecting my plate without asking if i had finished. (i left half on my plate)or if i had enjoyed my meal. clearly not.

the food tasted like a microwaved chicken breast, swimming in balsamic sryup and soggy gnocchi.
my dining partnersmealwas the vegetable crepe, also tasted like cardboard and microwaved. nothing tasted fresh or even hot. i notice a lot of good reviews.... did we come on the worst day of the year??

we would be too scared to try this restuarant again.

we've been here once before and both times have loved it. the service is wonderful (although reading the other reviews ... maybe we just hot lucky!), the food is gorgeous and the atmosphere is casual but classy. the pumpkin crepes are to die for and the strawberry risotto was delicious. my duck was a little overcookef and chewy but it didnt spoil themealthe black olive tortelini is one of the nicer pasta dishes i've ever eaten. the prices are reasonable and the portions are huge! we had a three coursemealand could barley finish our dessert. i would recommend bar alto to anyone looking for a nicemealthat's casuaul but still a bit special.

very poor attitude. after the trauma of the recent floods, both our premier of qld and lord mayor of brisbane, have pleaded with the brisbane public to "come out and support your local businesses". my wife and i took up that challenge this weekend by visiting the powerhouse to (a) hopefully have a nicemealat either of the restaurants at the centre and then (b) to view the nikon-walkley photographic display. we normally visit watt when we are in the area, but decided to visit bar alto to sample their wares. what a poor decision that was.

it was obvious from the outset that the young attendant had not heard of the plea from either senior politician, or perhaps he thought he was too cool for us öldies". upon being seated, we were asked if we wanted tap water or something else. i have travelled the world and while it may well be tap water, it is never referred in that manner. as it was mid-afternoon, my wife preferred to have two side dishes as her mains while i was looking forward to a mains and side dish. imagine my surprise when we were told in a somewhat derogatory tone ïs that all you want" as we don't do just side dishes". i informed the attendant that i was having the rib eye fillet that i would like medium to well done. more surprise when i was told that they only serve medium rare steaks. thismealwas bereft of much else and at $30 i thought i was entitled to have the steak the way i wanted it. a compromise of a medium steak was met with the same stonewwalling - we only do medium rare steaks.

eventually we were "retired to the bar side"of this so called restaurant where we were obviously better placed. perhaps the "real"business owner needs to be present to see what is happening at their establishment in these hard times. to leave the first impression of their business to somebody who is (a) unable to relate to his patrons, (b) is not willing to offer a compromise and (c) is self-effacing and äbove their station in life" even though being dressed in short sleeved shirt and jeans, can only be a negative for the business.

the snide looks we received once we were on the "pub"side were not appreciated and could have developed further if we had the inclination. the actual cash (not plastic) that i had in my wallet could most likely have paid his wages for the week, but we were obviously not hip enough for him to worry.

we have tried to answer the call of our senior politicians, but ended up with a sour taste in our mouths. by the way, ourmealon the "pub"side was very nice, but next time we are in the area, we will not be venturing into bar alto unless the staff have an attitude update. a completely different experience to the many times we have been to watt.
