every bite a delight. this was our firstexperiencewith bacchanalia. we went to celebrate my birthday. the prix fixe menu had lots of choices, from safe to adventurous, and we especially appreciated that wines were suggested for each course, taking the guess work out of our selections.

the service was very professional and attentive without being overbearing. we never had to wait for anything or had the feeling we were being watched.

the cheese puff and cold fennel soup with radish and scallion that the chef sent out as appetizers were absolutely delicious. the cheese puff was warm and just melted in my mouth, exploding with creamy texture and flavor. the cold sipping soup which followed was refreshing with radish and scallion providing a little bite as well as a tangy surprise finish.

the warm sourdough bread, served with butter, was delicious and almost invisibly replenished as soon as our plate was empty.

for the first course, we both had the blue crab fritter. it was a perfect, golden, crispy globe and the citrus with thai pepper essence that accompanied it brought out the crab flavor without overpowering it. the dry waterbrook riesling, from columbia valley was the perfect accompaniment.

for the second course, i had the wood grilled lamb loin chops with trumpet mushrooms, fava and pole beans, globe artichokes and pickle onions. two thick chops came cooked exactly as i had requested - medium towards medium rare, and accompanied by a little jar of mint honey. the meat was tender, the flavors blended beautifully, and the vegetables were crisp and delectable. the accompanying wine, a louis martini reserve cabernet sauvignon from alexander valley provided just the right contrast and full-bodied flavor for the lamb.

for the salad, i chose arugula with bleu d'auvergne cheese, pickled shallot and candied pecans, an excellent blend of intense sweet , salty and sour flavors to follow the strong flavors of the lamb dish. it was a perfect dish to follow the lamb.

the chef then sent out an intermezzo - a tiny strawberry buttermilk smoothie to cleanse the palate - a blend of sweet/sour to get our mouths ready for dessert. yummy.

i chose the orange souffle with tarragon custard and pistachio florentine. the souffle was perfectly cooked and although i couldn't detect tarragon in the accompanying sauce, i found the flavor delicious. the pistachio florentine was a small crispy lacy cookie on the side that provided a lovely contrast of texture to the souffle. the la serra moscato d'asti from piedmont, italy had just enough bubbles to provide a cleansing contrast to the creamy richness of the souffle and its delicate flavor was just right to complement but not overwhelm the dessert.

my husband had the brown butter poached rhubarb fried pie with honey tangerine float. he said the tangerine float reminded him of the orange and vanilla ice cream treats on a stick we used to get from good humor. but the pie was a bit of a disappointment. the unpleasant taste and smell of the fat used to fry it overwhelmed it.

after dinner, we received two madeleines, a dish containing chocolate truffles, rose water marshmallows and tiny chocolate cookies as well as a tower of caramel cupcakes with a candle on it for my birthday. our appetites were really too satisfied by this point for us to be able to enjoy these treats but the staff graciously offered to box them up so we could take them home.

on the way out, we enjoyed browsing through the eclectic star provisions store and ended up purchasing several items. the evening was altogether delightful. we will definitely return.

if you are in search of a great, quiet, excellent fine dining experience, look no further. it's by no means cheap, but it is as good as any 1-2 star michelin star restaurant you'd find in ny. ourexperiencewas excellent. the first 3 courses and samples in between were simply perfect. the only disappointment was the desserts. i'm not a huge dessert person, and i lean more to the less rich (creme brûlée variety) style. the blueberry soufflé i got and the chocolate soufflé my wife got were just ok. perfectly fine at any other restaurants, but when they have perfection served at every other course, it was a bit of a let down. that being said, we can't wait to come back...when our bank account recharges.

a layman's nitty gritty guide to bacchanalia. price: $85 prix fixe. decide upon your five courses at the outset of the evening.

wine: world renowned list, with few choices under $50/bottle but..... you can do as we did and bring your own, with a $25 corkage fee. (previously unaware of this option, people at neighboring tables said, "we're doing that the next time!')

service: impeccable, and contrary to other posters' comments, friendly and helpful. allow two hours for your meal.

dress: business casual. (a suit and tie is fine, but not necessary)

reservations: a must on weekends. despite being rainy and cold saturday evening, the restaurant was filled to capacity.

parking: no valet. free parking in the lot outside the restaurant.

now for the amazing food:

course 1 -- the confit foie gras torchon with subtle hints of peanut and cocoa, is melt-in-your-mouth wonderful.

course 2 -- nantucket bay scallops with cauliflower watercress and truffle vinaigrette is indescribably succulent and delicious. the gulf crab fritter -- my original choice -- couldn't hold a candle to t's scallops. when our server suggested i change selections after my initial taste, i didn't hesitate to do so.

course 3 -- you can't go wrong with the local berkshire pork, prepared three ways. each bite is a burst of flavor and texture. t thought the same of his jamison farm lamb.

course 4 - omg, if you like the combination of salty and sweet, buffalo milk ricotta 'ice cream' with toasted oats, pears, cranberry and lemon mint is absolutely perfect. i wanted more, more, more. t had the bucheron celles-sur-belle which was very good, but the accompanying spaghetti squash was bland and lacking.

course 5 - we ordered both versions of bacchanalia's signature valrhona chocolate. t's with hazelnut, cornmeal and frozen orange custard was more interesting and tastier than mine. if requested, your server will bring excellent french press coffee -- a good way to cap off one's meal.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

if you're a hearty steak-and-potatoes kinda person, bacchanalia will not be for you. but if you relish a foodexperiencewith innovative flavors and textures, by all means try this #1 zagat rated restaurant. courses are small, but combined with chef's amuse-bouche and other little 'gifts' ( as the wait staff say), you will be satisfied, happy and actually full when you leave.

i can't wait to return!

a sumptuous feast (to forget?). live vicariously through my companion and me by viewing the attached photos. although we enjoyed the dinner immensely no one part of it bedazzled the senses. money can't always buy you the perfect dinner and the perfect dinner will not be found here.

the pheasant breast with confit leg creamed farro, parsnip black trumpet mushrooms, and black cherries was the major highlight. the bird was perfectly prepared, juicy, tender, and flavorful: nary a hint of gaminess.

antipidol to the succulence of the pheasant was the dreadful foie gras. admittedly, i am not a fan of torchon style foie gras, but this preparation was more akin to spam. it was an awful mouthfeel with a tangy saltiness that lingered well into the third course.

the new york strip was the third course and was consummately cooked and seasoned. i loved every bite, all four bites to be exact.

my fourth course, the selection of cheeses, was a crap shoot. the attached menu photo shows a variety of cheeses among 4 major categories: sheep, goat, cow, and blue. i chose a range of flavors from mild and nutty (hawes wensleydale from the cow's milk selection) to tart and peppery (monte enebro from the goat's cheese selection). nothing prepossesing about the flavors here, the selections change nightly so thankfully you can't reproduce this average arrangement.

jealousy was palpable on the fifth course. my companion generously allowed me to order the chocolate doughnuts (her first choice) while she ordered the sweet potato tart. the doughnuts and chocolate espresso were divine and despite green eyes of envy, my companion managed to muddle through her other selection.

overall, it was a great experience, but not perfect and not worth the price. i will not be back, but with so much variety to be had, yourexperiencemay be entirely different.

disappointed. i couldn't fairly rate ourexperienceat bacchanalia as below average in general, but with respect to its reputation and our expectations, it was definitely sub-par.
of course the food was delicious, and beautifully prepared to the eye and palate. but the service was so poor, that it all but ruined our evening, and left us with a bad taste in our mouths (idiom and pun intended).
it was not even close to "the best restaurant in atlanta", and we regretted spending our very special night there.

absolutely amazing. when i first heard about bacchanalia, i looked them up and saw the numerous awards they had. i decided to make a visit and came with high expectations.

without as much as a single nitpicky mistake, they provided perfect service, excellent food, a stellar atmosphere, and phenominal presentation. a very upscale yet relaxed enoughexperienceto be casual.

just to note that if you do decide to go, be prepared to spend a good bit (at least $75 a person).
