"where vegetarian dining is a cultural heritage..." ... aptly coined term for this place. serves some very very authentic south indian food. great ambiance and a very homely service. the starter juices (need to be ordered) are excellent, in particular the rasamudranari tops them. the rice with sumptuous ghee and the variety of podis and pickles makes us nostalgic of our grannies days. the food is very delicious and it is a must go place, if you need to experience true south indian meals.

great ambiance with beautiful wooden furniture. always a must visit when i pass by coimbatore.

i always take either laghu bhojan thali and try their ice creams. this place has a lot on their menu but somehow the decor doesn't somehow encourage me to try their north indian dishes.

for coimbatore it feels like this is a bit on the higher side of price.

the moment i stepped in. i felt so divine and traditional. my wife and i had meals and by far the best meals in a restaurant and second best beyond home food.

if you are a vegetarian then you will find this place dear to you.

food quality is excellent, taste is just like home made. i checked with volunteers who served food and they assured that food coloring or chemicals are not used.

enjoy the food and stay vegetarian.

posh vegetarian restaurant in the town! iyengar style restaurant with typical antique interiors makes the dining experience a pleasant one. little overpriced, however you must visit this place at least once to get to know the peculiar taste! bookings recommended.

any person from chennai would love coimbatore's food. but this restaurant is too good and famous for their meals. unlike other chain of too good restaurants in cbe like annapoorana & anandhas, you get podi and ghee for your meal. they serve some special menu for lunch everyday and we were served 'murungai keerai' kootu for the meal. carrot halwa included in the thaali was superb.. ambience was nice but dark. if you want try out variety than your usual annapoorna/anandhas meal, this one is a wise choice for veggies in the city :)

now, what can i say?

the ambience in the place is brilliant. the service was courteous. everything is served in silver vessels which was impressive.

i went for lunch. they have two varieties of lunch. godavari and kaveri. godavari is a little extensive including starters and few more items and costs 280. kaveri is your usual meals with a little more and costs 195.

the taste was just average barring the dessert(payasam) which was absolutely delicious.

i felt it was overpriced.

bottomline - a different experience, but an not sure if it's worth the price.

came over with my parents to coimbatore for a few days and amongst the restaurants, my folks wanted to visit was annalakshmi

for all those unfamiliar, the annalakshmi chain was set up several years ago and is a fine dining vegetarian restaurant, which supports several artistic and charity services and more impressively, their chefs and service staff is made up entirely of volunteers.

i ate at the chennai branch decades ago, so was quite curious to requaint myself to the chain.

the coimbatore restaurant is located at the race course rd and the restaurant space feels like a part temple part yesteryear palace, with the large idol of the goddess beaconing everyone, the furniture is all kashmiri tables and chairs and loads of art pieces and temple imagery. very old school, but charming.

the menu is pretty small and consists of the standard thali (with south and north indian items), a south indian thali, juices, lassis and a few ala carte items like curd rice.

we ordered the standard thalis and got a pineapple- ginger and a coconut-honey-lime juice.

the thali consists of soup, bowls of poriyal (gourd and ladies finger), veg kurma, dal, rasam, sambhar, dry puddis (dal, coriander), pulao, rice, rotis, onion raita, papad, curds and a beetroot halwa. point to note is that the thali and cutlery is mostly silver and adds a regal touch!

i personally found the tomato soup, too peppery and the ladies finger curry was not very tender, but the rest was first rate home style cooking and tasted good.

the highlights for me were the gourd curry, rasam, dal, coriander powder and the beetroot halwa. worth repeats !

the juices were very good too and we ended our meal with a traditional paan beeda.

our server was this really sweet lady and infact all the service people there were constantly hovering about and ensuring that everyone was eating well.

the home style cooking and the generally elderly vibe of the place, may not be everyone's cup of tea, but it's a good slice of traditional veg south indian fare. highly recommended

overall - 8.5
