thisplacehas been in business since 1953. has the air of a well worn neighborhood bar. the gumbo is first rate and i have lived in new orleans and eaten lots of gumbo. the wings and burgers are excellent and in a city where the signature dishes are ribs and the pulled pork sandwich alex's excels with its ribs. whilst dining, you are serenaded by two vintage jukeboxes with great selections of timeless hits.

best hot wings in memphis. a few friends and i set out on a quest a few days ago to find the best hot wings in the city. we put together a carefully chosen list of the most popular memphis wing joints, and visited 13 places in one day to find the best.

in the end, alex's was the winner. we ordered the hot, and it had a flavor like no other. not just spicy, there was a delicious taste, too. the meat was just slightly on the dry side (if i had to nitpick) and i'd like to have some flats to go along with the drummies. but when we added up all the scores, alex's came out on top.

i've had the burgers here too, and they're delicious, and i hear the ribs and barbecue are good.

it's a dive bar, so if you're looking for a fancyplaceto hang out, go down to germantown or something. this is where the locals go, and have been going for years and years because, as far as i can tell, it doesn't change much around here.

get the wings. trust me.

best in town here's why.... 1. rocky. plain and simple if you have the privilege of talking with him and asking about the history of theplaceand his life growing up working there with his dad you will see why the food is so excellent. one of the primary reasons to eat a burger and grab a beer here is the owner - a true memphis legend.

2. food. the burgers, wings (drummies only), ribs, gumbo, even steaks... everything i've had here is excellent. the setting of a classic dive bar with character (and comfy chairs) often hides the fact that alex's tavern has damn good food. i've even been here for special occasions and rocky cooked a four course meal that was excellent.

3. cold beer. good luck finding a better price and colder beer in town. the options are simple and classic like you'd expect.

4. tvs. easily one of the best places to watch the grizz, tigers or nfl in town. easy to get in and out of and is always a great atmosphere for the big game.

pro tips: cash only with atm on site. rocky does cook the best burger. if you happen to find someone else manning the grill, be sure to tell them how you like it and kindly remind them (especially if it busy) until it is done right. there is nothing wrong with sending your food back if it is not up to expectations in my opinion. most nights you can find the police outside and inside enjoying a burger. be sure to drink responsibly (or get an uber home) and behave yourself. enjoy and take friends.

greek burger!. nothing fancy here, plastic cups and foam plates. i recommend the greek burger. a goodplaceto grab a beer and hang out. bring cash because they don't take credit cards or debit cards.

oh my!. its all love.

i have been a rabid fan of cozy corner and still say they have among the best bbq in memphis... except ribs. seriously... these ribs are insanely good. they are cooked perfectly. its a peppery, garlicky bark with meat that glides from the bone. that's right ... glides.

we got two racks to take home along with beans and slaw. the beans were among the best i have ever had.

the second trip i got the greek burger to go with fries. these are my kind of fries. thick cut... crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside. they are definitely seasoned well again with garlicky peppery goodness.

the greek burger is as good as any burger i have ever had. the patty is think and prepared with loving hands.

but even better than the burger is the gumbo. shrimp. chicken. sausage. well seasoned. ....might even be as good as the ribs... by far the best gumbo i have had in memphis and rivals some places on the coast.

its definitely a bar atmosphere. if that's not your thing get it to go... but i can tell you thisplacedoes not disappoint. ..

don't let the neighborhood fool you. this is one of the great places in memphis. after about 2:00 am theplacegets really great. they do have great food. the rocky burger is one of the best in memphis. also try their gumbo. it is great. best juke box in memphis.

great burger. not a whole lot of other comparable options to alex's; def nothing fancy about thisplaceor the burger. but i must say that i enjoyed it every bit as much as huey's. of course, it is a different environment, too, so it might depend on whether or not you like going to a hole in the wall. plus, not a lot of beer choices, but if you're all about keeping it simple...this is it.

late night. alex's is an instituion and has been since rocky's dad was running the place. it's nothing fancy, just a great beer joint for watching sports and getting an excellent burger. you won't fnd many out of towners here, it's a localsplacefor sure.
