voted the bestmiddleeastern restaurant in savannah (and the only one to our knowledge), al salaam deli is a unique and delicious food experience in the starland district. a small eatery, it nevertheless boasts a huge menu, offering everything from typical arabic dishes such as baba ganoughe to even classic american cuisine like hamburgers and chicken nuggets.

best gyros (pronounced heros) in town! this is a take out restaurant, however if you stop in at the right time, you might get space at one of the few tables inside. food is authenticmiddleeastern offering. however i ordered two burgers for non-adventurous kids, the meat was delicious, tender and cooked perfectly. gyros can be ordered in regular and spicy, with a good balance of beef, lettuce, onions and tomatoes. will definitely be coming back with friends!

al salaam deli is a taste of themiddleeast, wrapped in a tiny package on habersham and 40th. al salaam has been serving customers for over 15 years, and by now the owners, husband and wife duo meqbel and rose salameh, have the routine down pat. when walking in, there is a laminated menu to your left with a small counter nearby. decide what you’d like and order at the counter. grab a drink from the cooler and take a seat; your food will be brought out to you. if you’re eating in, don’t worry about paying until the end of your meal. note the award for bestmiddleeastern cuisine..i have to agre

i am new tomiddleeastern food but i have ordered the chicken curry twice and i crave it now. owner was very friendly and didn't rush my decision process. additionally, i have never liked commercially made hummus but i couldn't get enough from this place on the freshly grilled pita wedges that come with the platter. it is great to venture out of the ordinary at this unassuming place. they also serve amazing gyros for the less adventurous.

excellent fallafel, disappointing salads. admittedly this was my first time eating at al salaam and i must say the experience was so-so. the purveyor is a very friendly chap and he makes delicious fallafel, but all-in-all the fallafel salad i ordered was very underwhelming. here's why...

the lettuce (iceberg) looked like it came from a bag and the tomatoes were completely tasteless. to my disappointment, there was a solitary olive in my salad, which for $8.99 should have been twice the size and contained maybe 12 times the amount of olives. also, i'm pretty sure the dressing (ranch, gross) came from a bottle.

while some of the food here seems tasty and well-made, it's very overpriced. a side of hummus, for example, costs $ 8.99 with pita. really dude? $8.99? maybe i'm too used to goodmiddleeastern food, as i recently lived in a part of the states with 4 solid restaurants within a five block radius of each other, but al-salaam can definitely do better.
